A high school (also secondary school, senior school, secondary college) is a school that provides adolescents with part or all of their secondary education. It may come after primary school or middle school and be followed by higher education or vocational training.
The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.
The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.
In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".
Los Gatos High School (LGHS) is a high school in Los Gatos, California, a small high income town near San Jose in the Silicon Valley. Los Gatos High School was founded in 1908 and is part of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District and is home to a large number of Silicon Valley Executives' teenagers. During the late 1880s up until the establishment of Los Gatos High School, high school age students were taught at Los Gatos Central School, a grammar school which was established in 1886. While the school is not labeled a "feeder school" or preparatory, a large number of students move on to Ivy League and Tier One colleges and universities after graduation. In the 1970s, Los Gatos High School was listed among the top thirty high schools in the State of California. In a 2013 study Los Gatos High School ranked 86th in California.
The school enrolls approximately 1,700 students and employs about 100 teachers. In 2004, 94% of graduating seniors went on to attend college, including 64% to four-year colleges. Los Gatos High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and has regularly received six-year accreditations, the highest possible. The school has been recognized twice as a National School for Excellence. LGHS is also notable for its sports programs and exceptional athletes, making it unique among academically distinguished public schools in the area. The Los Gatos Wildcats are part of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League of the CIF Central Coast Section.
The town of Los Gatos is an incorporated town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 29,413 at the 2010 census. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Los Gatos is ranked the 33rd wealthiest city in the United States. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area at the southwest corner of San Jose in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Los Gatos is part of Silicon Valley, with several high technology companies maintaining a presence there. Most notably, streaming and content creator, Netflix was founded in Los Gatos and has developed a large presence in the area.
The name Los Gatos is Spanish, meaning "the cats". The name derives from the 1839 Alta California land-grant that encompassed the area, which was called La Rinconada de Los Gatos, ("Cat's Corner"), where "the cats" refers to the cougars and bobcats that are indigenous to the foothills in which the town is located. The name has been anglicized to /lɔːs ˈɡætəs/ lawss-GAT-əs, although one also hears pronunciations truer to the original Spanish, /loʊsˈɡɑːtoʊs/ lohss-GAH-tohss. The anglicized pronunciation is preferred by locals.
A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.

LGHS Varsity Football Game @ Helm Field, Los Gatos High School
Bubble gum and house parties
When you stole your parents rum
And tried to screw everything that could breathe
Back in high school we didn't have a whole lot to do
We watched the world go by on the television screen
Said it's the 90's kids that's way out this is way in
Go beat each other up on the dance floor
Told us drugs were no good
But then we smoked 'em and liked 'em
So much that we smoked a little more
We liked 'em so much, we smoked a little more
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
You're so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
It's kinda hard with all that sexual confusion
Sometimes you don't know if you're gay or straight
But what's the difference, it's a wonderful illusion
Most times you won't make it past second base
I'm in a band, we kinda suck but we don't now it yet
And I don't care anyway
'Cuz soon, I'm gonna sell these drums, pay my rent
Support my kid and tell him all about way back in daddy's day
I'll tell him all about way back in daddy's day
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
You're so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
Some years later by a soda coolerator
In a corner store back in my home town
This stranger smiles at me, said
"Remember the class of '93?"
And for some reason it makes him look real proud
After all the good times he said we had
He looks at me, scratches his head
And asked me where the hell I ever went
And the funny thing is that I never even knew him
But he coulda been any one of my high school friends
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
Your so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
Did I call you name?
Singin' that song that I wrote for you
Singin' that song I wrote for you
