Girls! Girls! Girls! is a 1962 American musical comedy film starring Elvis Presley as a penniless Hawaiian fisherman who loves his life on the sea and dreams of owning his own boat. "Return to Sender", which reached #2 on the Billboard pop singles chart, is featured in the movie. The movie opened at #6 on the Variety box office chart and finished the year at #31 on the year-end list of the top-grossing movies of 1962. The movie earned $2.6 million at the box office.
The film was the second of three films Presley shot on location in Hawaii.
Elvis Presley plays Ross Carpenter, a Hawaiian fishing guide and sailor who enjoys boating and sailing out on the sea. When he finds out his boss is retiring to Arizona, he seeks to find a way to buy the Westwind, a boat that he built with his father.
Ross is caught in a love triangle with two women: childish, insensitive club singer Robin (Stella Stevens), and sweet Laurel (Laurel Goodwin). When Wesley Johnson (Jeremy Slate) makes advances on Laurel, Ross punches him out. Wesley owns the boat, so Ross thereby loses it. Laurel, however, is not who she pretends to be. Ross has to choose between her and Robin.
Girls! Girls! Girls! is the sixteenth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 2426, in November 1962. Recording sessions took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on March 26, 27, and 28, 1962. It peaked at number three on the Top LP's chart. It was certified Gold on August 13, 1963 by the Recording Industry Association of America.
As soundtrack album sales far outstripped his regular album sales (Blue Hawaii outselling Pot Luck with Elvis by ten to one) Presley found himself firmly entrenched in songs designed for a light-entertainment formula of beautiful scenery and girls galore. With this discrepancy in sales, the formula of the soundtrack music became the focus.
Sixteen songs were recorded at the sessions in March, of which thirteen were used for the soundtrack album. Banished from the kingdom after running afoul of the Colonel, songs from favored writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller could only be those already written for someone else, in this case the title track being a hit for The Coasters in 1961 before being adapted for the Presley film. This song and two others, "Return to Sender" and "Because of Love," appear on the 1995 soundtrack compilation Command Performances: The Essential 60's Masters II.
Girls Girls Girls is a 1989 album collecting songs by British singer/songwriter Elvis Costello from 1977–86. Costello chose and ordered the tracks on the album himself, and accompanied them with extensive liner notes. The title of the album is sometimes rendered as Girls! Girls! Girls! or Girls +£÷ Girls =$& Girls (using typography from the album cover).
Note that there are significant differences amongst the CD, LP and cassette editions of the album, with each format featuring a different selection of tracks.
The CD version of Girls Girls Girls features 47 tracks. Nine of the tracks (marked ♥) are exclusive to the CD configuration of this compilation, and do not appear on either the LP or cassette version of the album.
