This is Juliane. She is a politics student. Together with her flatmate, Marco, she is talking about "social democracy". Marco only had a rough idea about it until now.
Quickly and clearly explained differences between Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Democratic Socialism, and Social Democracy. What do each of these misused words mean in relation to one another? Socialism has become a "cool" word with America's young people. Since Bernie Sanders calls himself a Democratic Socialist, then socialism must be AWESOME, right??? After all, Bernie wants people to have free healthcare and free college. Nothing wrong with that!
The problem is that Bernie Sanders is NOT a democratic socialist - or at least he's not running as one. Many Western European countries provide healthcare and low-cost higher education, but these social programs are made possible by regulated market economies that exist in these countries. Many young people who think that they are socialists are, in actuality, social democrats or even social liberals.
Democratic socialism began in the late 19th century with the Fabian Society. The Fabian socialists, inspired by the "Fabian tactics" against Hannibal used by Fabius Maximus against Hannibal during the Second Punic War, decided that Karl Marx's goals of abolishing private property and free enterprise could be better accomplished by the democratic process than through a violent revolution. Democratic socialists seek the same end as garden variety Marxian socialists (the end of "capitalism"), but by different means (the democratic process).

The Nordic Model of Social Democracy: A Conversation with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven
The Nordic countries with their small open economies, well-developed welfare states and organized labor markets, have given rise to the concept of the Nordic model. In recent years the Nordic model has attracted positive global attention, since the Nordic countries have demonstrated good results in terms of growth, employment, gender equality, competitiveness, living conditions and egalitarianism when compared to other countries.
External change in the form of increased global competition, climate, migration and European integration, interacting with internal change associated with an aging population and rising expectations with regard to welfare services, will be a test of the models resilience.
The Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will introduce the features of the Nordic Model and discuss the future development of the model.
Stefan Löfven is Sweden’s Prime Minister since October 3, 2014. He heads a coalition government consisting of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and the Green Party. Mr. Löfven is chair of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since 2012. Between 2005 and 2012 he was an alternate member of the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party. Between 2006 and 2012, he chaired the Metalworkers' union IF Metall, and was also an alternate board member of the European Metalworkers' Federation between 2002 and 2007. Mr. Löfven has also served as deputy chair of the Swedish Trade Council in 2004-2012, and as a board member of the Olof Palme International Centre in 2002-2006. He was employed at Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik from 1979 to 1995, during which he had various trade union assignments. Born 1957, he is married and lives in Stockholm.

In 1981, the Labour opposition was in disarray; a Gang of Four had broken away to form their own party, the Social Democrats. This later went into an Alliance with the Liberal Party under the guidance of David Steel. In relation to its aim to "Break the mould of British Politics", the SDP/Liberal Alliance regretfully failed to live up to this dream, despite the praise received throughout 1981 and 1982. Toward the end of a seven-year existence, the Alliance merged together to form the Liberal Democrats.

Social democracy
Social democracy is a political ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a capitalist economy, and a policy regime involving welfare state provisions, collective bargaining arrangements, regulation of the economy in the general interest, measures for income redistribution, and a commitment to representative democracy. Social democracy thus aims to create the conditions for capitalism to lead to greater egalitarian, democratic and solidaristic outcomes; and is often associated with the set of socioeconomic policies that became prominent in Western and Northern Europe—particularly the Nordic model in the Nordic countries—during the latter half of the 20th century.
Social democracy originated as a political ideology that advocated a peaceful, evolutionary transition from capitalism to socialism using established political processes in contrast to the revolutionary approach to transition associated with orthodox Marxism. In the post-war era in Western Europe, the example of the totalitarian Soviet Union, where the state controlled everything, was unappealing and socialists sought an alternative viable form of socialism that compromised between socialism and capitalism. In this period, social democrats embraced a mixed economy based on the predominance of private property, with only a minority of essential utilities and public services under public ownership. As a result, social democracy became associated with Keynesian economics, state interventionism, and the welfare state, while abandoning the prior goal of abolishing the capitalist system (private property, factor markets and wage labour) and substituting it for a qualitatively different socialist economic system.

Socialism has become a "cool" word with America's young people. Since Bernie Sanders calls himself a Democratic Socialist, then socialism must be AWESOME, right??? After all, Bernie wants people to have free healthcare and free college. Nothing wrong with that!
The problem is that Bernie Sanders is NOT a democratic socialist - or at least he's not running as one. Many Western European countries provide healthcare and low-cost higher education, but these social programs are made possible by regulated market economies that exist in these countries. Many young people who think that they are socialists are, in actuality, social democrats or even social liberals.
Democratic socialism began in the late 19th century with the Fabian Society. The Fabian socialists, inspired by the "Fabian tactics" against Hannibal used by Fabius Maximus against Hannibal during the Second Punic War, decided that Karl Marx's goals of abolishing private property and free enterprise could be better accomplished by the democratic process than through a violent revolution. Democratic socialists seek the same end as garden variety Marxian socialists (the end of "capitalism"), but by different means (the democratic process).

The Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will introduce the features of the Nordic Model and discuss the future development of the model.
Stefan Löfven is Sweden’s Prime Minister since October 3, 2014. He heads a coalition government consisting of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and the Green Party. Mr. Löfven is chair of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since 2012. Between 2005 and 2012 he was an alternate member of the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party. Between 2006 and 2012, he chaired the Metalworkers' union IF Metall, and was also an alternate board member of the European Metalworkers' Federation between 2002 and 2007. Mr. Löfven has also served as deputy chair of the Swedish Trade Council in 2004-2012, and as a board member of the Olof Palme International Centre in 2002-2006. He was employed at Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik from 1979 to 1995, during which he had various trade union assignments. Born 1957, he is married and lives in Stockholm.
