STORYLINE
Europe appeared to be leaning to the right ahead of European Parliament elections on Sunday, with voters in many countries favouring conservative parties against a backdrop of economic crisis.
Opinion polling showed right-leaning governments with edges over their opponents in Germany, Italy and France.
Conservative opposition parties were tied or ahead in Britain, Spain, and some smaller countries.
Despite the early hours of the morning, Greeks started gathering in voting stations on Sunday to cast their ballot for the EU elections.
At a technical school near Athens, preparations for the elections were well underway.
Voting assistants were sorting out ballot papers while others guided voters through the procedure.
Greece is expecting a record low turnout to the ballots this weekend for the Euroelections, even if the actual participating percentage is expected to be one of the highest one's in the EU.
Economical scandals, between former governments and foreign multinationals on the one hand, as well as the Greek Orthodox church and the current governments on the other, are on the main news agenda of the country, ahead of this year's EU Elections.
In Italy polling stations opened on Sunday morning for the second day of voting to elect their representative members to the European Parliament.
On the first day turn out stopped at 17.82 per cent said italian news agency ANSA, nearly three per cent lower than the 2004 elections.
The country is picking its members of the European Parliament against a backdrop of accusations that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old model and that he used a government plane to ferry friends and entertainers to his vacation villa.
Berlusconi, now in his third stint as premier, won a landslide victory last year despite corruption charges related to his business dealings hanging over his head.
Meanwhile, voting was also underway in Germany.

Italian/Nat
Italians went to the polls on Sunday for key regional elections, following a campaign marked by bitter personal attacks.
This is the first time Italians have had a chance to directly elect 15 regional presidents, following key election reforms.
Their selections will be seen as a litmus test for next year's parliamentary vote.
Sunny skies in central and southern Italy seemed to favour a brisk turnout for the Palm Sunday vote.
Many people went to the polls from church, bearing palm fronds or olive branches in their hands.
It was the end of a campaign that will be remembered for its mudslinging: Premier Massimo D'Alema called it one of the ugliest electoral campaigns in the republic's already bungled history.
This was also the first campaign held under a new and much-criticised law, pushed through by the left, which sharply restricted political T-V advertisements.
The 'par conducio' law called instead for televised debates, many of which were little more than exchanges of insults by party leaders.
It was the first time Italians had a chance to directly elect regional presidents.
Direct mayoral elections, which began in 1993, helped create a new class of influential politicians accountable first to the voters, not party machines.
The direct election of regional presidents could nudge this decentralization even further along.
The election is seen as a popularity poll for Premier Massimo D'Alema, his conservative rival, media magnate Silvio Berlusconi and the right-wing National Alliance Leader Gianfranco Fini.
D'Alema and his wife allowed photographers to record the moment as they cast their votes in Rome.
D'Alema is a former Communist who has headed a centre-left coalition government since October 1998.
He says he believes the victor on Sunday will be the side that wins the most regional presidencies.
Right-wing Alliance Leader, Gianfranco Fini also made the most of a good photo opportunity, allowing photographers to film as he stood by the ballot box, and commenting to reporters outside.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"It has been more difficult for voters to inform themselves about the programmes of the various parties and this is very serious, especially as at this time in Italy there is a problem with assenting voters."
SUPER CAPTION: Gianfranco Fini, National Alliance Leader
Despite the long-term significance of the vote, political leaders acknowledge that national politics and personalities dominated the campaign.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"There are 44 million Italians who have the right to vote, and so this is a political test for us, not just an administrative one."
SUPER CAPTION: Gianfranco Fini, National Alliance Leader
Media magnate cum politician, Silvio Berlusconi cast his vote in Milan on Sunday.
Berlusconi leads a centre-right alliance which includes former neo-fascists and, in a marriage of campaign convenience, the autonomy-seeking Northern League.
Berlusconi spent lavishly on his campaign.
He chartered a luxury liner for a flashy, nine-day campaign cruise to drum up support for centre-right candidates.
Only 15 of Italy's 20 regions are electing presidents and legislatures on Sunday.
The 42 million people eligible voters in these areas account for roughly 75 percent of the population.
The regional elections are being seen as a trial run for the 2001 parliamentary race and as a barometer for party support.
The centre-right insists the true yardstick from tonight's outcome should be taken from the raw number of votes.

Polls have opened in Italy’s regional and municipal elections. More than 20 million Italians are eligible to vote to elect mayors of more than 700 municipalities and governors of seven regions.
