As tundra-like temperatures and wind chills as cold as -70 degrees F fan out across the northern USA, everyone is blaming the "polar vortex" for their weapon malfunctions. Polar vortexes, however, are nothing new for Rex Reviews - whose participants were practically born directly into snow banks. In this video, watch Rex and Davick clad in their extremely attractive multi-layered ECW outfits trying to effectively manipulate their weapon systems into operating properly as thy run the shotgun course. This review was shot in great haste in order to gather footage before our cameras froze up, so we apologize for lacking our usual degree of thoroughness in this unscientific, yet purely fun range video. However, we can firmly witness to the general performance characteristics of various types of firearms and related equipment in such conditions as we have been testing them in sub zero temperatures for many years. Our general conclusion is that, when ambient air temperatures drop considerably below -10deg F, that the reliability of ANY firearm is greatly reduced. Even the most rugged bolt action rifles will experience frozen ice in firing pin holes and frozen feeding mechanisms under these conditions. The best way to remediate many of these issues are to minimize the use of standard gun oils and opt for either nearly dry operation, or for modern ECW formulations. Even if the best lubes are used in ECW, blowing snow often gets into critical areas of the action and feeding mechanisms of these various firearms and melts upon contact with the heated steel. Ice can be difficult to deal with when it obstructs areas not easily accessible for quick removal. Keeping your dust covers closed and your magazine wells covered can help tremendously.
