Chinese Methods for Industrial Espionage
About the Lecture: Mr. Dopp will discuss two case studies, one historical and one current, that demonstrate the nature and methods utilized by the Chinese Intelligence Services to conduct industrial espionage. He will talk about the methods of security and protection implemented by private companies in the U.S. to protect data, examine how the Chinese Services defeated these security measures, and the possible strategic solutions to combat problems through counterintelligence operations.

What is INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE? What does INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE mean? INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE meaning - INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE definition - INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE explanation.
Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license.
Industrial espionage, economic espionage, corporate spying or corporate espionage is a form of espionage conducted for commercial purposes instead of purely national security. Economic espionage is conducted or orchestrated by governments and is international in scope, while industrial or corporate espionage is more often national and occurs between companies or corporations.
"Competitive intelligence" levels out two scenarios of description as the legal and ethical activity of systematically gathering, analyzing and managing information on industrial competitors becomes beneficial. It may include activities such as examining newspaper articles, corporate publications, websites, patent filings, specialised databases, information at trade shows and the like to determine information on a corporation. The compilation of these crucial elements is sometimes termed CIS or CRS, a Competitive Intelligence Solution or Competitive Response Solution. With its roots in market research, "competitive intelligence" has been described as the "application of principles and practices from military and national intelligence to the domain of global business"; it is the business equivalent of open-source intelligence.
The difference between competitive intelligence and economic or industrial espionage is not clear; one needs to understand the legal basics to recognize how to draw the line between the two. Others maintain it is sometimes quite difficult to tell the difference between legal and illegal methods, especially if considering the ethical side of information gathering, making the definition even more elusive.
Economic or industrial espionage takes place in two main forms. In short, the purpose of espionage is to gather knowledge about (an) organization(s). It may include the acquisition of intellectual property, such as information on industrial manufacture, ideas, techniques and processes, recipes and formulas. Or it could include sequestration of proprietary or operational information, such as that on customer datasets, pricing, sales, marketing, research and development, policies, prospective bids, planning or marketing strategies or the changing compositions and locations of production. It may describe activities such as theft of trade secrets, bribery, blackmail and technological surveillance. As well as orchestrating espionage on commercial organizations, governments can also be targets — for example, to determine the terms of a tender for a government contract so that another tenderer can underbid.
Economic and industrial espionage is most commonly associated with technology-heavy industries, including computer software and hardware, biotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications, transportation and engine technology, automobiles, machine tools, energy, materials and coatings and so on. Silicon Valley is known to be one of the world's most targeted areas for espionage, though any industry with information of use to competitors may be a target.
Information can make the difference between success and failure; if a trade secret is stolen, the competitive playing field is leveled or even tipped in favor of a competitor. Although a lot of information-gathering is accomplished legally through competitive intelligence, at times corporations feel the best way to get information is to take it. Economic or industrial espionage is a threat to any business whose livelihood depends on information.

Let's say you run a fortune 500 company. And you wanna get an edge on a business competitor that’s been on your tail. If you could get your hands on your competitors proprietary technology, you could turn the tide on profits! Maybe instead of getting your hands on their technology secrets, maybe you could use some photos of your competitor’s CEO in a “compromised” position? Maybe some internal documents could help?
Spying never changes - it’s all about getting information - intelligence from other humans. Some people will get trained through government intelligence agencies, then quit to sell those skills to the private sector. It’s so bad that some insiders say this intelligence “brain drain” is hurting US national security.
Corporate espionage is expensive. It requires a lot of manpower and expertise that not many people have. On top of that, espionage doesn’t always yield results. So how far people are willing to go to spy on their business enemies depends on how much money is involved.
The major espionage firms claim that they don’t do anything shady. One reason is that unless the intel they get is used for shady things, intel obtained in a shady way isn’t admissible in court. BUT, depending on the laws of the country they’re operating in, almost anything goes.
For every corporate espionage assignment, you’ll get a target to go after: this can be just plain information about something, documents, photographs, etc. Now, not everyone would be willing to betray their company, so the first step is to create a psychological profile of your ideal mole.
Another twist on this method is that if you seduce them but they’re still giving you resistance on the juicy stuff you’re really after, you can try to persuade them to reveal more inconsequential, less important details that are easier to squeeze out - but are still illegal to share none-the-less.
If there’s a king in this corporate espionage game - in this economic espionage game - it’s without a doubt China. If you’ve watched this channel, you know that China’s long term goal is to surpass the US as the world’s greatest superpower.
Part of that strategy is for China to become the market leader in vital industries like tech, aerospace, ai, energy, medicine, biotech, etc. And to become the market leader in any of these fields, you need to develop cutting-edge technology. Which is why China been involved in corporate espionage case after corporate espionage case.
Does the US and other countries spy on foreign businesses? Yes!
But there’s no denying that China is the undisputed master at this.

A level with a fun atmosphere that takes you on a short journey following a spy on his mission through different places within a city, which showcases some great scenery, both in daytime and nighttime, along with some neat effects that add to the depth and vibe of the many locations we find ourselves in.
The animations for the different obstacles, decorations and some of the characters we meet up with look nice, and while they aren't the craziest ever, they serve their purpose and immerse you into the world a bit more.

As a direct successor of preceding agencies such as the Cheka, GPU, OGPU, NKGB, NKVD and MGB, it was attached to the Council of Ministers. It was the chief government agency of "union-republican jurisdiction", carrying out internal security, intelligence and secret police functions. Similar agencies operated in each of the republics of the Soviet Union aside from the Russian SFSR, with many associated ministries, state committees and state commissions.
The agency was a military service governed by army laws and regulations, in the same fashion as the Soviet Army or the MVD Internal Troops. While most of the KGB archives remain classified, two online documentary sources are available. Its main functions were foreign intelligence, counter-intelligence, operative-investigative activities, guarding the state border of the USSR, guarding the leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Soviet Government, organization and security of government communications as well as combating nationalist, dissident, religious and anti-Soviet activities.
On 3 December 1991, the KGB was officially dissolved. It was later succeeded in Russia by the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and what would later become the Federal Security Service (FSB). Following the 1991–1992 South Ossetia War, the self-proclaimed Republic of South Ossetia established its own KGB, keeping the unreformed name. In addition, Belarus established its own national security agency in 1991, the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus, keeping the unreformed name.
The GRU (military intelligence) recruited the ideological agent Julian Wadleigh, who became a State Department diplomat in 1936. The NKVD's first US operation was establishing the legal residency of Boris Bazarov and the illegal residency of Iskhak Akhmerov in 1934.[5] Throughout, the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and its General Secretary Earl Browder, helped NKVD recruit Americans, working in government, business, and industry.
Other important, low-level and high-level ideological agents were the diplomats Laurence Duggan and Michael Whitney Straight in the State Department, the statistician Harry Dexter White in the Treasury Department, the economist Lauchlin Currie (an FDR advisor), and the "Silvermaster Group", headed by statistician Greg Silvermaster, in the Farm Security Administration and the Board of Economic Warfare.[6] Moreover, when Whittaker Chambers, formerly Alger Hiss's courier, approached the Roosevelt Government—to identify the Soviet spies Duggan, White, and others—he was ignored. Hence, during the Second World War (1939–45)—at the Tehran (1943), Yalta (1945), and Potsdam (1945) conferences—Big Three Ally Joseph Stalin of the USSR, was better informed about the war affairs of his US and UK allies than they were about his.
Soviet espionage was at its most successful in collecting scientific and technological intelligence about advances in jet propulsion, radar and encryption, which impressed Moscow, but stealing atomic secrets was the capstone of NKVD espionage against Anglo–American science and technology. To wit, British Manhattan Project team physicist Klaus Fuchs (GRU 1941) was the main agent of the Rosenberg spy ring.[8] In 1944, the New York City residency infiltrated top secret Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico by recruiting Theodore Hall, a 19-year-old Harvard physicist.
The KGB failed to rebuild most of its US illegal resident networks. The aftermath of the Second Red Scare (1947–57) and the crisis in the CPUSA hampered recruitment. The last major illegal resident, Rudolf Abel (Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher/"Willie" Vilyam Fishers), was betrayed by his assistant, Reino Häyhänen, in 1957.
Recruitment then emphasised mercenary agents, an approach especially successful in scientific and technical espionage, since private industry practised lax internal security, unlike the US Government. One notable KGB success occurred in 1967, with the walk-in recruitment of US Navy Chief Warrant Officer John Anthony Walker. Over eighteen years, Walker enabled Soviet Intelligence to decipher some one million US Navy messages, and track the US Navy.
In the late Cold War, the KGB was successful with intelligence coups in the cases of the mercenary walk-in recruits FBI counterspy Robert Hanssen (1979–2001) and CIA Soviet Division officer Aldrich Ames (1985–1994).

This talk will look at the art of espionage and intelligence gathering over the last 50 years. We will look at the evolution of the tools of the trade and the rules of the trade, and a number of examples of successful espionage episodes will be discussed in relation to the tools and rules. We’ll see how the number of participants has exploded over the past 50 years, and speculate about the path of espionage in the coming years.
Richard M. (Dickie) George joined the National Security Agency in 1970 as a mathematician, and remained at NSA until his retirement in 2011. While at NSA, he wrote more than 125 technical papers on cryptomathematical subjects, and served in a number of positions: analyst, and technical director at the division, office, group, and directorate level. He served as the Technical Director of the Information Assurance Directorate for eight years until his retirement. Mr. George remains active in the security arena; he is currently the Senior Advisor for Cyber Security at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory where he works on a number of projects in support of the U.S. Government. He is also the APL representative to the I3P, a consortium of universities, national labs, and non-profit institutions dedicated to strengthening the cyber infrastructure of the United States.
