The Punjab (/ˈpʌndʒɑːb/ or /ˈpʌndʒæb/), also spelled Panjab, panj-āb, "five rivers" (Punjabi: ਪੰਜਾਬ (Gurumukhi); پنجاب (Shahmukhi); पंजाब (Devanagari) ), is a geographical region in South Asia comprising vast territories of eastern Pakistan and northern India. In Pakistan, it includes the Punjab province and parts of the Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir. In India, it includes Punjab state and Chandigarh union territory, Haryana, parts of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Division and Rajasthan.
The name of the region is a compound of two Persian words and was introduced to the region by the Turkic Muslim conquerors of India and more formally popularized during the Mughal empire. Punjab literally means "(The Land of) Five Waters" referring to the following rivers: the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas. All are tributaries of the Indus River, the Chenab being the largest.

Indian Punjab and Pakistan Punjab were part of India before the division of Pakistan from India in 1947. With the partition of British India in 1947 into India and Pakistan, the state that most bore the effect of division was Punjab. Larger part of Punjab on the western side went to Pakistan and the remaining to India. The Indian state of Punjab was subsequently divided into smaller states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Hindus and Sikhs fled Pakistan for India, while Muslims sought a home in Pakistan. Today, Punjab Province in Pakistan is 97 percent Muslim and 2 percent Christian, with small numbers of Hindus and other groups. Sikhs account for 61 percent of the people in India’s Punjab State, while 37 percent are Hindu, and 1 percent each are Muslim and Christian. Small numbers of Buddhists, Jains, and other groups are also present. Hindus and Sikh refugees from west Punjab who migrated to India settled predominantly in the states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.
Punjab has been home to many religions. Hinduism florished in Punjab through ancient times, followed by Buddhism. Followers of Islam held political power in the area for nearly six centuries. Sikhism has its origins in Punjab, where Sikh states survived until the middle of the twentieth century. After the British annexed Punjab in the 19th century, they introduced Christianity to the region. Thus Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Christianity are all represented among the Punjabi people.
In Pakistan, Punjabi is written using the Persian-Arabic script, which was introduced to the region during the Muslim conquests. Punjabis in India use the devanagri script. Punjabi is spoken by two-thirds of the population of Pakistan. In India, by contrast, Punjabi is the mother tongue of just under 3 % of the population. Punjabi was raised to the status of one of India’s official languages in 1966. However, Punjabi continues to grow and florish in India, whereas in Pakistan, Punjabi never received any official status and has never been formally taught in schools. Punjabi vocabulary in Pakistan is heavily influenced by urdu, whereas punjabi in India is influenced by Hindi.

The Punjab (

The area now known as the Greater Punjab comprises what were once vast territories of West Pakistan and northern western India. The bigger section of the Punjab at about 60% lies within Islamic Republic of Pakistan and 40% within Republic of India where it has been further divided into three states; Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The Punjab in Pakistan is soon to be divided into three parts - Punjab, Southern Punjab and the province of Bahawalpur.

Punjabi is spoken by two-thirds of the population of Pakistan. In India, by contrast, Punjabi is the mother tongue of just under 3 % of the population. Punjabi was raised to the status of one of India’s official languages in 1966. However, Punjabi continues to grow and florish in India, whereas in Pakistan, Punjabi never received any official status and has never been formally taught in schools. Punjabi vocabulary in Pakistan is heavily influenced by urdu, whereas punjabi in India is influenced by Hindi.

Punjab is a state in the northwest of the Republic of India, forming part of the larger Punjab region.The state is bordered by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the east, Haryana to the south and southeast and Rajasthan to the southwest as well as the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west. It is also bounded to the north by the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The state capital is located in Chandigarh, which is a Union Territory and also the capital of the neighbouring state of Haryana.
After the partition of India in 1947, the Punjab province of British India was divided between India and Pakistan. The Indian Punjab was divided in 1966 with the formation of the new states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, as well as the current state of Punjab. Punjab is the only state in India with a majority Sikh population.
The term Punjab comprises two words: "punj meaning five and ab meaning water, thus the land of five rivers." The Greeks referred to Punjab as Pentapotamia, an inland delta of five converging rivers. In Avesta, the sacred text of Zoroastrians, the Punjab region is associated with the ancient hapta həndu or Sapta Sindhu, the Land of Seven Rivers. Historically, the Punjab region has been the gateway to the Indian Subcontinent for people from Greece, Central Asia, Iran, and Afghanistan.
Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab; it is the largest single producer of wheat in India. Other major industries include the manufacturing of scientific instruments, agricultural goods, electrical goods, financial services, machine tools, textiles, sewing machines, sports goods, starch, tourism, fertilisers, bicycles, garments, and the processing of pine oil and sugar. Punjab also has the largest number of steel rolling mill plants in India, which are located in Steel Town Mandi Gobindgarh, District Fatehgarh Sahib.
