Two Leeds Met students are through to the finals of the Beachcroft Mooting Shield after beating competitors BPP LPC in their semi-final.
Tom Royston and Stephen Dudley from the Graduate Diploma in Law have won their moot semi-final against BPP LPC and are through to the finals of the Beachcroft Mooting Shield, which will take place later this month. Both students will attend the finals with their coach, Natalie Ledgard, Senior Lecturer at Leeds Law School.
Mooting is an exercise that allows law students the opportunity to practice their skills. It calls for the application of theoretical legal knowledge to practical, focused situations.
Beachcroft LLP has this year initiated the Beachcroft Mooting Shield, which commenced in October 2009. The Shield is based on a group league format, with universities throughout Yorkshire and the North-East competing against each other. As well as receiving the Beachcroft Mooting Shield, the winning team of students will receive a week's work placement at the firm. A further prize will also be awarded for the best overall advocate.
Coach, Natalie Ledgard said: "The Beachcroft Shield has been a long competition, most of the external competitions work on a knockout system so the team have worked exceptionally hard in the six moots so far. I am proud of their hard work, dedication and polished performance, their place in the final is well deserved."
Tom and Stephen have mooted against all five teams in their league and have reached the finals at the top of their league. Tom is still in competition for the prize for best overall mooter. He said: "It has been fantastic to reach the finals; it's a really interesting competition. We've had a great amount of support from our fellow students at Leeds Met and from our coach Natalie. Overall we've had a great time and are just keeping our fingers crossed."

Synopsis
Various legislative provisions allow local authorities to both charge and trade. In the face of significant cuts to funding from central government, making the most of these powers to generate income is vital. The ability to charge for discretionary services, and to enter into commercial agreements for profit, in both the public and private sectors, allows local authorities to offset cuts whilst continuing to provide frontline services.
This programme considers:
• The legislative boundaries relating to charging and trading
• Strategy for income generation

The session delivers a genuine court room experience to highlight how such errors can be perceived outside the hospital environment, with strong messaging around consequence, set within an entertaining scene.
The session was run by DAC Beachcroft LLP, a leading international law firm providing advice within the public and independent health and social care sector since the inception of the NHS, now pre-eminent in both strategic and operational advice in an evolving health system. Witnesses giving evidence are leading professionals at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
This session was one of the most well received ever hosted at an ISQua Conference.

Synopsis
Various legislative provisions allow local authorities to both charge and trade. In the face of significant cuts to funding from central government, making the most of these powers to generate income is vital. The ability to charge for discretionary services, and to enter into commercial agreements for profit, in both the public and private sectors, allows local authorities to offset cuts whilst continuing to provide frontline services.
