Tony O'Connor (born November 15, 1966) is an Irish former soccer player during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and is currently reserve team manager at Bohemians. He was born in Dublin and is known as "Toccy".
O'Connor was a defender or midfielder during his long career in the League of Ireland. He played for Home Farm, St. Patricks Athletic, Bohemians and Dublin City.
A native of Ballymun, O'Connor began his league career at Home Farm, making his debut against Galway United in the opening game on the 19th of October 1986. Despite relegation for Home Farm that year, he impressed at full back. He spent 3 years at the club making 70 league appearances before Brian Kerr brought him to St Patricks Athletic.
He made his debut against Limerick and Pats won their first League of Ireland Championship since the 1960s. After 3 seasons at Pats and 95 league appearances, he moved to Bohemians in the summer of 1992. In his first season at Dalymount, Toccy and Bohs came agonisingly close to winning the league title, losing in a 3 way play-off to Cork City. This was to become a sign of things to come as Bohs became the nearly men of the 90s, losing 4 FAI Cup semi finals in a row and finishing as runners up in the league in 1995/96 and 1996/97. Then came the 2000/01 season where Bohs done the "Double" of League of Ireland and FAI Cup. O'Connor scored the only goal in that cup final against Longford Town. He picked up another League winners medal in 2002/03 and was rewarded with a testimonial against St Patricks Athletic on January 31, 2003. This turned out to be his last game for Bohs when after 302 league appearances and 23 goals, he left Dalymount Park to join Dublin City. He helped them win the First Division title that year and after 2 years there, he retired.
O'Conor (Middle Irish: Ó Conchubhair; Modern Irish: Ó Conchúir), is an Irish Gaelic clan based throughout Connacht but most prominently in what is today County Roscommon, County Mayo and County Sligo. The clan name originated in the 10th century as a derivative of its founder Conchobar mac Taidg Mór. They descend in the paternal line from the Connachta's Uí Briúin Ai. They were originally kings of Connacht in general and of the Síol Muireadaigh; as members of the Uí Briúin were kinsmen of the Mac Diarmata and Ó Flaithbertaigh amongst others. In the 13th century, the Normans began to make gains in Connacht; particularly the Burkes, to the cost of the O'Connors. They split into various smaller areas of power, for instance the O'Connor Don and Roe ruled in County Roscommon while the Ó Conchobhair Sligigh ruled in County Sligo. The current O'Conor Don is Desmond O'Conor Don (b. 22 September 1938) who lives in Rotherfield, East Sussex in England.
The Ó Conchubhair Donn is the senior head of a lineage which provided about one hundred Kings of Connacht, thirty Chief of the Name and eleven High Kings of Ireland, the last of them being Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair (1088–1156), and his son Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (c. 1115–1198).
Desmond Bernard "Des" O'Connor, CBE (born 12 January 1932) is an English comedian, broadcaster and singer. A former chat show host, he was the presenter of the long-running Channel 4 gameshow Countdown for two years. He has also recorded 36 albums and has had four top-ten singles, including a number-one hit with "I Pretend", with global sales of more than ten million records.
O'Connor was born in Stepney East London to Maude (née Bassett) and Harry O'Connor. His mother was Jewish and his father was born in Ireland, O'Connor had a Bar Mitzvah. O'Connor has a sister, Patricia, who is one year his junior. He was evacuated to Northampton during the Second World War and was briefly a professional footballer with Northampton Town. After completing his National Service in the Royal Air Force, he worked as a shoe salesman at Church's in Northampton, and for United Counties, both on the road and in the office, before entering show business. Before his break in television, his first theatre appearances were in variety, where he appeared in venues throughout the country.
