The Labour movement or Labor movement (see spelling differences), or, respectively, labourism or laborism, are general terms for the collective organization of working people developed to represent and campaign for better working conditions and treatment from their employers and, by the implementation of labour and employment laws, their governments. The standard unit of organization is the trade union.
In some countries, especially the United Kingdom and Australia, the labour movement is understood to include a formal political wing, usually as a political party known as a "labour party" or "workers' party". Many individuals and political groups otherwise considered to represent ruling classes may be part of and active in the labour movement.
Contemporary labourism developed in response to the depredations of industrial capitalism at about the same time as socialism. However, while the goal of labourism was to protect and strengthen the interests of labour within capitalism, the goal of socialism was to replace the capitalist system entirely.

The late Mr S R Nathan began his journey with the Labour Movement back in the 1950s, when he first became a Seamen’s Welfare Officer fighting for the rights of workers. Seconded in 1962 to the Labour Research Unit, he fulfilled the role as best as he could, “taking on everything from negotiating for workers and on behalf of unions to learning about human behavior, patience and providing a listening ear to workers’ problems.” Under his leadership, NTUC was able to mature into a responsible and credible trade union centre. With the passage of time, Mr S R Nathan moved on to bigger and greater roles – eventually assuming the highest office in the land – but his “heart has always been with the Labour Movement and all that it stands for.” Watch this video for some of the key moments in Mr ...

In a speech in London, the challenger and rank outsider claimed Corbyn backers in Momentum were using the same tactics as the Militant Tendency in the 1980s and "the very future" of Labour was at stake. Mr Smith's outspoken attack on Mr Corbyn's left-wing allies comes in his final speech of a bitter leadership campaign and follows his bruising clash with the Labour leader in the final TV debate. It also comes after the disclosure of moves by left-wing activists to de-select the veteran Liverpool MP Louise Ellman and a leaked document that named and shamed Labour MPs "disloyal" to Mr Corbyn. :: McDonnell 'furious' over leaked list But it has almost certainly come too late to influence the outcome of the contest. Bookmakers, pollsters and most Labour MPs believe Mr Corbyn is on course f...

Many believe it is a time of extreme weakness and vulnerability for union and labor across the US. In recent years, their power has been diminishing and membership is at an all time low. Supporters call unions the backbone of America’s blue collar workers, while their critics believe unions are a symbol of violence, strikes and socialist influence. The Punch Up Collective hosted this panel discussion as our contribution to the 2015 May Day events in Ottawa. Workers of all kinds are under increasing attack, but the mainstream labour movement frequently seems unable to defend even its own previous victories, let alone expand worker struggles into new and necessary areas. Yet workers continue to come together collectively to demand justice and dignity in the workplace and wider society. Indeed, some of the most vital contemporary workplace struggles are taking place outside the boundaries of the mainstream labour movement, which is often handcuffed by a strict adherence to labour law, a lack of real internal democracy, and an inability to adapt to the changing realities of work. We were proud to have speakers from four vibrant organiza...
