The Flint provides water for over one million people, 10,000 farms, unique wildlife, and 300 miles of exceptional fishing and paddling. Despite being in a historically wet area of the country, in recent years many Flint River tributaries have dried up completely and the river’s flows have dropped dramatically. American Rivers and Flint Riverkeeper are working in collaboration with diverse partners to restore the flows and health of the Flint.

“The emergency manager for Flint, Michigan, appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012, rejected using the city’s river as drinking water after consulting with the state’s environmental protection agency.
Snyder appointed Ed Kurtz to be Flint’s second emergency manager and Kurtz selected Jerry Ambrose to be the city’s chief financial officer. Both men were tasked by the Republican governor’s administration with restructuring the city’s government to save money after it was in danger of becoming insolvent. One cost-saving measure considered was to quit buying municipal water from Detroit.
In a civil deposition not reported until now, Ambrose testified under oath that emergency manager Kurtz considered a proposal to use the Flint River, discussed the option with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and then rejected it.”

Georgia DNR and Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at Ichauway are working together to reassess the population of alligator snapping turtles on the Flint River. These turtles were found to be in decline 20 years ago due to commercial trapping, and as a result, are now protected by the state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently being petitioned to list this species under Endangered Species Act. The data collected on this survey will be used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in determining the need for listing.

Flint changed its water source from the Detroit system, which draws water from Lake Huron, to the Flint River in April 2014 as a cost-saving option. Reports found that Flint River’s water is more corrosive than Lake Huron’s, and caused high levels of lead to leach out of the city’s aging pipes into the water supply.
Flint officials assured everyone that the water was perfectly safe at first. However, after it was revealed that the water was indeed contaminated, officials suggested that residents begin boiling their water and handed out water filters for the public to use. A state of emergency was declared in Flint in January.

The White House said it does not know whether President Barack Obama will drink filtered city water when he visits Flint, Michigan on Wednesday for the first time since a drinking water crisis began there.
Flint, a city of 100,000 mostly poor African Americans, was under the control of a state manager when, to save money, it switched its water supply in 2014 from Detroit's system to the Flint River.
Doctors say the switch exposed children to dangerous amounts of lead. The corrosive water of the river caused lead, a heavy metal that can harm brain development and cause other health problems, to leach from water pipes. Flint switched back to Detroit's system in October.
"I'm not aware of any photo-ops that involve the president's consumption of water," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in a daily press conference on Monday.
Earnest said the White House is encouraging people to listen to the advice they get from government scientific and health experts about what water is safe to drink, and Obama will also follow that advice.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, who has faced calls for him resign over the crisis, last month promised to drink filtered Flint tap water for 30 days to show it is safe.
The water is safe to drink as long as people use up-to-date filters, water experts have said. Flint's drinking water system will not recover until heavier demand by residents results in the flushing out of lead particles, they added.
In the past, Obama has taken personal action to assure people that sea water was clean. Months after the BP crude oil spill sullied the Gulf Coast in 2010, Obama went swimming with his daughter Sasha off the coast of Florida.
