Area code 313 is the telephone area code serving the city of Detroit, Michigan, the city's innermost enclave cities (Hamtramck and Highland Park), and Dearborn, Redford and Grosse Pointe. Until December 1, 1993, it served the entire southeast Michigan region, including Metro Detroit, Flint, and the southern part of Michigan's "Thumb", but demand for new phone numbers led to the creation of the new area code 810 for the northern suburbs, Flint, and the southern Thumb. Later, that area would be subdivided further, into 248, largely serving Oakland County, and 586, covering Macomb County. On December 13, 1997, the 313 area was further divided creating the 734 area out of Washtenaw, Monroe, and western Wayne counties.
The area code has been used as a cultural identifier of inner-city Detroit. Rapper Eminem's debut album, Infinite, contains a track titled "313", and in Eminem's movie 8 Mile, "the 313" is used in the protagonist's final rap battle as a toponym to identify those culturally connected to run-down parts of Detroit. His old rap group was called "313." The group 3 1/3 mentioned in the movie is a reference to the area code. This area code was also used in the University of Rochester's Office of Admissions video, Remember our Name. This video provides prospective students an array of Rochester facts and figures with a hip-hop twist. The video and the music was performed by campus all-male a cappella group the Midnight Ramblers.
follow me was all she said
we're almost there
to their sanctuary
(???) the ones before
there's no escape, from here
her ?moments? ring unclear
when she says that
666 is her area code
[repeat to the end]
