It was a close game between the Trenton Thunder and the Akron Rubberducks in Game 3 of the Eastern League Championship Series. The Rubberducks took an early lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI ground out by RF Jordan Smith. In the top of the 5th Akron would make it a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly by SS Eric Statmets. Trenton would make it a 1 run game in the bottom of the 5th with a monstrous home run by C Sebastian Valle. But it would be enough as Akron would go on to win 2-1 and would win the Eastern League Championship Series 3-0. In game one of the Eastern Division Championship Series, Trenton got the win 3-2 over the Reading Fightin Phils. First run came in off of a double by 1B Dante Bichette Jr. Reading tied it up in the top of the 3rd off of an RBI single by C Jorge Alfaro. LF Mark Payton gave Trenton the lead in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI double. Reading tied it again in the top of the 5th with an RBI double from RF Dylan Cozens. In the bottom of the 7th, after moving up to 3rd base on a wild pitch, another wild pitch to C Francisco Diaz would bring Dante Bichette Jr home. Tyler Jones would shut the door in the 9th with a 1-2-3 inning.
The Thunder defeated the Fisher Cats 6-4 in DH Alex Rodriguez's second rehab game. A-Rod had a 2 run homerun in the bottom of the second, his third in a Trenton Thunder uniform. Thunder offenese was consistent early on as their 6 runs came in the first 2 innings. CF Dustin Fowler, 1B Tyler Austin, C Kyle Higashioka, and LF Mark Payton all drove in one run each.
The Trenton Thunder took game two of their three game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 8-2. SS Tyler Wade opened up the bottom of the first inning with a home run to make it 1-0. In a seven run second inning 3B Jose Rosario knocked in an RBI single to make it 2-0. Tyler Wade would come in clutch again with an RBI single. CF Dustin Fowler followed that with another RBI single. DH Miguel Andujar would knock in another run with a sacrifice fly making it 4-0. Finally it was 1B Mike Ford who knocked in a 3 run home run to finish off the scoring. Starting Pitcher Ronald Herrera earned his ninth win of the season. He pitched 6 innings and had 4 strikeouts.
In a Bryan Mitchell rehab stint, the Thunder drop the last game of the 3 game series against the Akron Rubberducks, 5-0. Mitchell went 2.2 innings, striking out 4 batters, and allowing 3 hits. Thunder offense came as singles from Miguel Andujar, Dustin Fowler, and Mark Payton.
After letting up 10 runs in the previous game Trenton came back the next day and shut down the Reading Phils 4-0. Trenton started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by RF Billy McKinney, 2B Abiatal Avelino followed that with an RBI single of his own to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth Trenton would add on two more runs with back to back home runs by 3B Dante Bichette Jr. and C Sebastian Valle. Starting Pitcher Caleb Smith gets his third win of the season, he pitched 6 inning and had 8 strikeouts.
In the preview of the upcoming playoffs, Trenton and Reading opened their 4 games series with a pitchers duel. Both starters combined for 18 strikeouts in 10 innings. The scoring started in the top of the 2nd with an RBI double by DH Jake Fox. In the bottom of the 8th, with Trenton down to their last 4 outs, CF Dustin Fowler tied the game with his 12th homerun of the year. After a 1-2-3 top of the 9th, it would be first baseman Mike Ford who would win the game with a walk-off homerun to give Trenton a 2-1 win.
The Reading Fightin Phils clinched the East Division of the Eastern League with a 10-5 over the Trenton Thunder Saturday night. Trenton started the scoring with an RBI double by 1B Mike Ford. In the top of the 3rd, Reading took the lead with a 3-run homerun by Dylan Cozens, giving him the franchise record with 39 homeruns. DH Jake Fox followed that with a homerun of his own, making it 4-1. In the top of the 4th, C Gabriel Lino would score on a sac fly by 2B Scott Kingery. Top of the 5th, 2 runs would come in from a single by CF Aaron Brown making it 7-1. Trenton chipped away at the lead with an RBI single by DH Dante Bichette Jr making it 7-2. During the first inning of every Thunder home game, Derby replaces the regular batboy and retrieves the bats of the home team. With the Trenton Thunder leading 1-0 in the EDCS, the two teams faced off again in Game 2. In the top of the first inning C Jorge Alfaro brought in the first run of the game with a sac fly, making it 1-0 Reading. Trenton would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
