Woman critical after car attacked with knife

A man who allegedly attacked a car with a knife has appeared in court as a woman fights for her life after suffering a "medical episode" during the incident north of the Sunshine Coast.

At 11.30am on Tuesday, a 22-year-old Rainbow Beach man Graham Hughes was allegedly tailgating another car on Clarkson Drive at Rainbow Beach.

At the Karoonda Road roundabout, Mr Hughes allegedly got out of his vehicle and began attacking the other vehicle with a knife.

During the attack, the driver of the second vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, suffered what police and paramedics described as a "medical episode".

Mr Hughes then drove off towards Inskip Point.

Paramedics conducted CPR on the woman who was airlifted in a serious condition to Royal Brisbane Hospital.

She was in critical condition on Wednesday.

A man and two young children in the car with the woman at the time were not physically harmed.

Mr Hughes, believed to be known to the man in the second vehicle, was charged with threatening violence and wilful damage on Wednesday morning.

He briefly appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He told the court he was being treated at Brisbane's Prince Charles Hospital for a heart condition, The Gympie Times reported.

The matter has been adjourned to Thursday.
