The demographics of Australia covers basic statistics, most populous cities, ethnicity and religion. The population of Australia is estimated to be 23,999,300 as of 15 February 2016. Australia is the 52nd most populous country in the world. Its population is concentrated mainly in urban areas and is expected to exceed 28 million by 2030.
Australia's population has grown from an estimated population of about 350,000 at the time of British settlement in 1788 due to numerous waves of immigration during the period since. Also due to immigration, the European component of the population is declining as a percentage.
Australia has fewer than three persons per square kilometre of total land area. With 89.01% of its population living in urban areas, Australia is one of the world's most urbanised countries. The life expectancy of Australia in 1999–2001 was 79.7 years, among the highest in the world.
The earliest accepted timeline for the first arrivals of indigenous Australians to the continent of Australia places this human migration to at least 40,000 years ago most probably from the islands of Indonesia and New Guinea.
A record chart is a ranking of recorded music according to popularity during a given period of time. Examples of music charts are the Hit parade, the Billboard Hot 100 or Top 40.
Many different criteria are used in different charts, including sales of records, cassettes and compact discs, the amount of radio airplay, and since the introduction of digital technology, the number of downloads and the amount of streaming activity.
Some charts are specific to a particular musical genre and most to a particular geographical location (although download charts are not easily pinned down in this way). The most common period of time covered by a chart is one week with the chart being printed or broadcast at the end of this time. Summary charts for years and decades are then calculated from their component weekly charts. Component charts have become an increasingly important way to measure the commercial success of individual songs.

Australia (/ɒˈstreɪliə/, /ə-/, colloquially /-jə/), officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who spoke languages grouped into roughly 250 language groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The population of 24 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated in the eastern states and on the coast.

PM Kevin Rudd says he makes "no apology for wanting a big Australia." But what are the real social and environmental implications for Australia's future if population swells by an expected 60 percent in the next 40 years reaching 35 million. Will an increase in population bring prosperity and cohesive cultural diversity, or will it lead to an overcrowded disaster? The ABC explores the challenges.

Dynamic population pyramids containing overlaid graphs of different census and population projection data are now in relatively common usage by national statistical agencies. This video, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, is an example of this kind of graphic used to show population growth and decline. Dynamic population pyramids demonstrate this process in action, leading up to and beyond the point (different for each country) where natural increase (growth) shifts to become natural decrease (decline). The Australian tool allows us to see, and compare, the different population changes in each of the Australian states, as well as nationally.
Australia's population heads for 24 million prompting immigration and infrastructure debate. Australia's population is growing at one of the fastest rates in the developed world and is set to hit 24 million, prompting a debate over how many migrants the country needs and how to deal with increasing demands on public services and infrastructure. --------------------------- Practice English with ABC and English Subtitle. Recent studies have shown that three-quarters of the Australian population have experienced at least one potentially traumatic event (such as a car accident, natural disaster, exposure to crime, loss of a loved one, or the violence of war) over their lifetime. Trauma affects people in different ways and, for some, the effects are so great that they develop the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which interferes with their ability to cope in daily life. For some people these symptoms, and others, may reduce -without professional help, especially if they have supportive people around them. However, recent research indicated that 86% of men and 76% of women with PTSD struggle with other mental health issues as time goes on - such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse is...
Travelling through the Australian continent, one is often appalled by the living conditions of the Aborigine people. Having lost touch with their culture and traditions, many of them have become outcasts or alcoholics who aimlessly wander the streets of the Australian cities. From the early 1800s to the late 1960s, Aborigines were gradually deprived of their land by the white man who used it for herding, cropping, and mineral extraction. Forced to leave their homelands, Aborigines were often separated from their children, who were sent to live with white families or to boarding schools, in an attempt to teach them the white man’s values. Today 390,000 Aborigines account for less than 3% of the current Australian population. Learn how they are beginning to find their place in a society whic...
Did extra-terrestrials visit Australia in the remote past? Could it be that they genetically enhanced the resident human population? Are there sacred sites dotted around Australia that date back to this ancient contact event? What are the wise elders of the Original Australian population saying about their understanding of human origins and ‘Sky Heroes’? Ancient Aliens In Australia provides an astonishing examination of these questions and also gives us: Scientific data that proves Australia was the first land to host modern humans, not Africa | Interpretations of ancient engravings telling a story of an ET contact event in the remote past | Re-examination of Dreamtime stories | Details of a modern Australian shaman journeying to meet with the Ancient Alien Sky Heroes themselves | Discussi...

A memorial lecture to celebrate the life and work of the esteemed social demographer and the former director of the University of Adelaide’s Australian Population & Migration Research Centre. The memorial lecture was given by Dr Alan Gamlen from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The lecture included a Q&A; panel including Professor Susan Kneebone from Melbourne University and Associate Professor Alex Reilly from the University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Law, experts in migration.
In a genetic study in 2011, researchers found evidence, in DNA samples taken from strands of Aboriginal people's hair, that the ancestors of the Aboriginal population split off from the ancestors of the European and Asian populations between 65,000 and 75,000 years ago—roughly 24,000 years before the European and Asian populations split off from each other. These Aboriginal ancestors migrated into South Asia and then into Australia, where they stayed, with the result that, outside of Africa, the Aboriginal peoples have occupied the same territory continuously longer than any other human populations. These findings suggest that modern Aboriginal peoples are the direct descendants of migrants who left Africa up to 75,000 years ago. Read More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aboriginal_Austra...
