California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com visits McArthur Burney Falls State Park in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
This beautiful evergreen forest, located just north of Redding between Lassen Peak and Mt. Shasta in California's lava country, is famous for its 129-foot waterfall, which cascades from Burney Creek down into Lake Britton. The falls are a sacred place for the Pit River Indian Tribe, who have held ceremonial rituals here for thousands of years.
President Theodor Roosevelt called these falls one of the wonders of the world. The year-round falls are formed by melting snow from Burney Mountain, which travels through underground streams before hitting solid rock and flowing back to the surface. Each day, more than 100 million gallons of water plunge over the falls.
While you're here, don't miss the Falls Loop Trail, which is a 1-mile hike to the base of the falls and back up. During the walk, you'll see lava flows and fractured basalt — evidence of the region's turbulent volcanic activity. After descending 100 feet into Burney Canyon, we're rewarded with a cool mist at the base of the falls.
The 20-foot pool is quite popular with fishermen, who regularly pull in rainbow, brook and brown trout. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks are allowed, and the season runs from late April through Nov. 15. Swimming is discouraged in the pool, which maintains a chilly 48 degrees.
As the trail continues uphill, you'll reach the top of the falls and circle back to the visitor center. The cliffs at the edge of the falls are unstable, so be sure to stay behind the fence!
If you want to stay the night, Burney Falls State Park has an excellent campground, with 128 sites, flush restrooms and showers. You can also book one of their 1- or 2-bedroom cabins, which are equipped with fire rings, propane heaters, picnic tables and bunk beds. Just note that there is no electricity, so bring along lanterns and your own bedding. At the Burney Falls General Store, you can stock up on grocery items, souvenirs and snacks.
During your stay, you can rent a canoe, paddle or rowboat for a day on Lake Britton, or head into Lassen Volcanic National Park. The McArthur Burney Falls park Heritage Day is held annually on Columbus Day in October.
After visiting Burney Falls, be sure to pull into Dusty Campground for a peek at the bridge from "Stand By Me."

California contains both the highest and lowest points in the contiguous United States (Mount Whitney and Death Valley), and has the third-longest coastline of all states (after Alaska and Florida). Northern California is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The San Francisco Bay Area (which includes the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, and the largest city of the region, San Jose), and Sacramento (the state capital) as well as its metropolitan area are the main population centers. It also contains redwood forests, along with the Sierra Nevada including Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe, Mount Shasta (the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range after Mount Rainier in Washington), and the northern half of the Central Valley, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions.
The area also contains one of the 11 megaregions of the United States, spanning from the San Francisco Bay Area east to the Lake Tahoe-Reno area, and from Metropolitan Fresno north to Greater Sacramento.
Native Americans arrived in Northern California at least as early as 8,000 to 5,000 BC and perhaps even much before, and successive waves of arrivals led to one of the most densely populated areas of pre-Columbian North America. The arrival of European explorers from the early 16th to the mid-18th centuries, did not establish European settlements in Northern California. In 1770, the Spanish mission at Monterey was the first European settlement in the area, followed by other missions along the coast—eventually extending as far north as Sonoma County.

Shasta in California's lava country, is famous for its 129-foot waterfall, which cascades from Burney Creek down into Lake Britton. The falls are a sacred place for the Pit River Indian Tribe, who have held ceremonial rituals here for thousands of years.
President Theodor Roosevelt called these falls one of the wonders of the world. The year-round falls are formed by melting snow from Burney Mountain, which travels through underground streams before hitting solid rock and flowing back to the surface. Each day, more than 100 million gallons of water plunge over the falls.
While you're here, don't miss the Falls Loop Trail, which is a 1-mile hike to the base of the falls and back up. During the walk, you'll see lava flows and fractured basalt — evidence of the region's turbulent volcanic activity. After descending 100 feet into Burney Canyon, we're rewarded with a cool mist at the base of the falls.
The 20-foot pool is quite popular with fishermen, who regularly pull in rainbow, brook and brown trout. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks are allowed, and the season runs from late April through Nov. 15. Swimming is discouraged in the pool, which maintains a chilly 48 degrees.
As the trail continues uphill, you'll reach the top of the falls and circle back to the visitor center. The cliffs at the edge of the falls are unstable, so be sure to stay behind the fence!
If you want to stay the night, Burney Falls State Park has an excellent campground, with 128 sites, flush restrooms and showers. You can also book one of their 1- or 2-bedroom cabins, which are equipped with fire rings, propane heaters, picnic tables and bunk beds. Just note that there is no electricity, so bring along lanterns and your own bedding. At the Burney Falls General Store, you can stock up on grocery items, souvenirs and snacks.
During your stay, you can rent a canoe, paddle or rowboat for a day on Lake Britton, or head into Lassen Volcanic National Park. The McArthur Burney Falls park Heritage Day is held annually on Columbus Day in October.
After visiting Burney Falls, be sure to pull into Dusty Campground for a peek at the bridge from "Stand By Me."

BDGLA is proud to release its very first compilation in Northern California (BD NorCal 1), recorded during my spring break between March 28 and April 1, 2016. Covering six different counties across the Sacramento Area (Sacramento, Solano, Yolo) and SF Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco). This video is very different from my BDGLA series since there will be less commentating and have a calmer tone, mainly since I have passengers with me riding. Nuestra Familia (Spanish for "our family") is a criminal organization of Mexican American (Chicano) prison gangs with origins in Northern California. While members of the Norteños gang are considered to be affiliated with Nuestra Familia, being a member of Nuestra Familia itself does not signify association as a Norteño. Some law enforcement agents speculate that the Nuestra Familia gang, which operates in and out of prisons, influences much of the criminal activity of thousands of Norteño gang members in California. The gang's main sources of income are distributing cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine within prison systems as well as in the community and extorting drug distributors on the streets.
Origins
Nuestra Familia was organized in either the Folsom, California, or Soledad, California, Correctional Training Facilities in 1968.
In the late 1960s, Mexican-American inmates of the California state prison system began to separate into two rival groups, Nuestra Familia and the 1957-formed Mexican Mafia, according to the locations of their hometowns (the north-south dividing line is near Delano, California.)
Nuestra Familia were prison enemies of the Southern Latinos who comprised La Eme, better known as the Mexican Mafia. While the Mexican Mafia had initially been created to protect Mexicans in prison, there was a perceived level of abuse by members of La Eme towards the imprisoned Latinos from rural farming areas of Northern California. The spark that led to the ongoing war between Nuestra Familia and members of the Mexican Mafia involved a situation in 1968 in which a member of La Eme allegedly stole a pair of shoes from a Northerner. This event put into motion the longest-running gang war in the state of California.
In addition, it is common knowledge for many California gang members that a member of the Crips gave a pair of replacement shoes to the Nuestra Familia member as a way to protect his manhood and dignity. Since then the Crips and Nuestra Familia members have been "cliqued up" in the California Correctional system. In normal penitentiary rules, there are certain politics among the various races which regulate how inmates of different races can interact with each other. These "politics" take supreme precedence over all issues; Blacks deal with Blacks, Whites with Whites, Mexicans with Mexicans, etc. Ultimately, this moment of friendship between the Crips and Nuestra Familia is a classic element of California gang history for those who are familiar, because "politics" (i.e. race) were put aside in the interest of bringing justice to another man's life.
Operation Black Widow
Federal law enforcement agencies, long unable to infiltrate Nuestra Familia, began to step up their investigations in the late 1990s. In 2000 and 2001, 22 members were indicted on Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) charges, including several who were allegedly serving as high-ranking gang leaders while confined in Pelican Bay. Thirteen of the defendants plead guilty; the other cases are still ongoing. Two of the defendants face the death penalty for ordering murders related to the drug trade. The largest of the federal investigations was Operation Black Widow. At the time of Operation Black Widow, law enforcement officials had estimated that Nuestra Familia was responsible for at least 600 murders in the previous 30 years.
In the aftermath of Operation Black Widow, the five highest-ranking leaders of Nuestra Familia, James "Tibbs" Morado, Joseph "Pinky" Hernandez, Gerald "Cuete" Rubalcaba, Cornelio Tristan, and Tex Marin Hernandez, were transferred to the United States Penitentiary, Florence ADX, the federal supermax prison in Colorado.

a tool to protect communities and ecosystems across Northern California. It examines
the use of fire by the Karuk Tribe of California, and the connection between the rise of megafires across the West and the last century of fire suppression. Drawing on interviews with
fire scientists, tribal and federal land managers, and fire savvy residents from across the
North State, this film provides insight on how our relationship to fire can be restored
through strategic use of fire as a powerful management tool.

BDGLA is proud to release its very first compilation in Northern California (BD NorCal 1), recorded during my spring break between March 28 and April 1, 2016. Covering six different counties across the Sacramento Area (Sacramento, Solano, Yolo) and SF Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco). This video is very different from my BDGLA series since there will be less commentating and have a calmer tone, mainly since I have passengers with me riding. There will be times where I do talk in Spanish, so I didn't have time to translate each scene. Honking is also very infrequent, so maybe this might be the one video that almost everyone might be satisfied with.
I'm still behind with BDGLA 23, but I will be releasing it next week. I've already wrapped up my final semester and graduated, so now I have more time available to work on new material. I'm leaving to Mexico tomorrow (May 21) and will have BDGLA 23 ready the day I come back (May 28). Just bear with me and I'll be releasing the best from LA very soon.
