The most dramatic episode ever? Yes, the Bachelor in Paradise season 3 premiere completely lived up to Chris Harrison's favorite catchphrase. So much happened, it's hard to say what's the biggest surprise: Chad crapped his pants, Chad and Lace hooked up, and Evan's got game?! We don't know what bartender Jorge is serving up at Playa Escondida, but whatever was in those tropical drinks sure took effect fast on these crazies. While filming was taking place this summer, Glamour was invited to Puerto Vallarta to see all of the drama, love, and gorgeous people taking over the beaches of Sayulita. It was there that we interviewed a suntanned Harrison, who brought us up to speed on everything going down in Paradise—most importantly, what really happened with Chad Johnson. "I had many things I wanted to accomplish this season," says Harrison. "Josh and Nick, brokering peace; finding love for Carly and Sarah, and exorcising the demon that is Jared from Ashley’s life." Not on that list? Getting to the root of Chad's anger issues. But hey, we still have time. Until then, Harrison explains what really pushed him over the edge, why Chad had to leave, and who's the hottest couple this season. Salud! The Real Chad: "Here’s the thing about Chad, [and I know] we’re going to catch some heat about bringing Chad back because of the threats of violence and all that stuff," says Harrison. "Chad is not a bad person. People get labeled very easily, and of course on our show…he’s the villain, she’s the villain, whatever. I don’t think life is that simple. Chad is one of those people I find very compelling and interesting. Why is he doing what he’s doing? When he got off [The Bachelorette], he was very contrite, very apologetic. The first thing he said to me in Paradise was, ‘Chris, I’m very sorry. I’m not that person. I’m back here to apologize to you, the producers, etc. about my behavior. I’m turning over a new leaf, and I want this to work.’ I believe in second chances, and I think most of the people watching believe in second chances too. I wanted him to redeem himself. But it was not good. He has some issues, and I hope he deals with them and gets better. It wasn’t pretty. It was a classic Mt. Vesuvius meltdown." Why Chad Had to Leave: "I didn’t think he was going to hurt anybody, though he threatens violence and says horrible things," says Harrison. "But he was taking away from everybody’s chances to make Paradise work. Paradise is very simple: You come in here to find love, and it either works or it doesn’t work. When Chad was there, he was just a black cloud hanging over everything. He had really been verbally abusive to some of the staff, to some of our crew, other people, and I started having a conversation with him. Again, it was a chance for him to be contrite and a chance to come to terms with the fact that he had been out of hand and his behavior was inappropriate. He was really glib and inappropriate, and it really pissed me off. He was rude to me—and in the middle of it, I just made the decision and said, 'You know what? I'm done. You’re out.' That’s the beauty of the power I have here. 'I see how you’re making everybody feel, and now you’re pissing me off. I’m done. Get out of my house.' The Aftermath: "Things got a little heated, and he was not happy with me. He called me a lot of names," says the longtime host. "In 15 years, no one has really verbally undressed me. Luckily, he used my full name, so when he’s saying, ‘F— Chris Harrison, f— Chris Harrison,’ it’s really kind of funny. Here’s the thing about Chad—and this is why I’m not angry at him; I’m not mad at him, and I don’t dislike him at all—there is a reason he behaves the way he does. I can go so far as to say, it comes from some sort of hurt, insecurity, something. I don’t know his past well enough to know where it comes from, but there is an issue there. After he goes to a certain length, you see him get very sad and sorrowful, very apologetic. You can tell he doesn’t like that or want to be that person. That’s the guy I wanted to come [on Bachelor in Paradise]. I wanted to kind of move him to that next step, whether he found love or not. He just wasn’t ready, unfortunately. So, I welcome him back.
