The $55 million watch is said to be the brainchild of the firm's founder and chair, Laurence Graff. Graff Diamonds sure knows how to make an entrance. The first time exhibitor at the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair will unveil the $55 million "Hallucination" ladies watch Thursday, the opening day of the event. The London-based diamond and jewelry firm known for making grand statements says the timepiece covered in a kaleidoscope of 110 carats of rare fancy colored diamonds is "estimated to be the most valuable watch ever created." An assertion that is difficult to dispute. There's a petite dial on this candy-colored watch but the fact that it displays time is a bit of an afterthought. The company said a team of designers, gemologists and master craftsmen worked on this piece for thousands of hours to perfect the concept, which came directly from Laurence Graff, chairman of Graff Diamonds. "The Graff Hallucination is a sculptural masterpiece; a celebration of the miracle of colored diamonds," Laurence Graff said in a statement. "For many years I have thought about creating a truly remarkable watch that illustrates our all consuming passion for diamonds. The Hallucination has made my diamond dream a reality." Graff was the talk of the watch industry's largest annual trade show in Basel when presented "Hallucination" a watch that cost $55 million to put together, loaded with more than 110 carats of diamonds. Growing up in the austere nineteen fifties, the young Graff had no formal business education, and began his career in the jewelry trade when aged just fifteen, first opening a small retail shop and later designing and producing jewelry pieces which he sold to other jewellers. By the early nineteen sixties, Graff, then in his mid twenties, had accumulated enough capital to open two exclusive retail outlets, one of them in the highly prestigious Hatton Gardens, still regarded as the epicenter of the UK's jewelry industry. By the seventies, Graff had built himself a tremendous reputation, with clientele seeking out his services from all over the World, extending from the oil sheiks of the Gulf states to the superstars of Hollywood. Graff's reputation for designing and producing exquisite jewelry, is matched only by his monument and unrelenting determination to achieve his goals, and being totally unafraid of taking calculated risks along the way. While building up his art collection is nothing more than a hobby, albeit an expensive one, some of the seventy-four-year-old Graff's purchases in the jewelry world are considerably more spectacular. In 2010 Graff shattered the world record for a single purchase of any jewel at auction, no less than $46 million dollars for a unique pink diamond. Two years previously he caused an even wilder uproar in the jewelry industry by paying out $24.3 million for the 31.06 carats deep-blue Wittelsbach Diamond. The Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond is a 31.06-carat (6.212 g) fancy deep-blue diamond with internally flawless clarity purchased by Laurence Graff in 2008 for £16.4 million. The Graff Pink was acquired by Graff in November 2010. A pink diamond with a type IIa classification and modified emerald cut shape, the diamond was previously held in a private collection for over 60 years. The diamond displayed 25 natural flaws. After cutting they produced a 51.53ct D colour Flawless type IIa and a 50.76ct D colour Flawless type IIa, both heart-shaped. The Peacock Brooch Taking the form of a peacock with a display of fanned tail feathers, this diamond brooch features a collection of coloured diamonds. A total of 120.81 carats of diamonds adorn the brooch, which measures a little over 10 cm in height.
