Navigation popups
The Navigation popups gadget allows easier access to several Wikipedia features as "popups" which appear when you hover the mouse over links. With this useful tool, when you hover your mouse cursor over a wikilink you can see a preview of the article or image; plus you can activate convenient functions such as going directly to the talk, edit, or history pages.
To use the navigation popups gadget you must be logged in under your own user account and turn on the gadget in your Preferences , available at the top right of your screen. In your preferences you will find navigation popups under Gadgets, Browsing gadgets
. Full instructions are on the Navigation popups page.

Collaborations WikiProjects Tip of the day
This is a WikiProject , an area for focused collaboration among Wikipedians.
To help centralise discussions and keep related topics together, all Tip-of-the-day discussions are to be held on the TOTD talk page .
This is the tip of the day (AKA TOTD ) project, providing useful daily advice on how to use or develop Wikipedia more effectively. This project is responsible for maintaining the Wikipedia:Tip of the day#Tip templates , and the collection of daily tips that are displayed by those templates.
For the complete library of tips arranged by subject, see Wikipedia:Tips .

List of tips by date
This is the tip of the day scheduling queue. The TOTD system operates on the Rolodex approach, in which each daily tip page is automatically displayed again year after year.
Each tip needs to be proofread before its upcoming presentation date arrives, to ensure that it has not grown out of date or become obsolete! Please help. For questions, comments, or to submit a new tip please go to our Project's Talk page .
Now, without further ado, here are Wikipedia's daily tips, by presentation date:

List of tips by order of name
This is the tip scheduling queue arranged alphabetically. The TOTD system operates on the "yearless year" approach, in which each tip's page is automatically displayed year after year. There is also a chronological list of these tips .
Each tip needs to be proofread before its upcoming presentation date arrives, to ensure that it hasn't grown out of date or obsolete! Please help. For questions, comments, or to submit a new tip please go to this Project's Talk page .

Tip templates [ edit ]
This is the list of tip display templates (also posted at Wikipedia:Tip of the day/July 21 ). Here is a gallery of display templates for you to view the display templates listed below:
{{totd }} – the main userspace version of the tip of the day template, with border, centered in the middle of the page. Complete with inspirational light bulb.
{{totd b }} – a more compact version of the above template. Useful for columns.
{{totd3 }} – a purple box version, useful for displaying the tip in columns.
{{totd-random }} – this is the tip of the moment template, which automatically displays a different tip every time you enter a page it is on. If it doesn't update, try clearing your browser cache .
{{totd-tomorrow }} – this shows tomorrow's tip, and is used by Wikipedia tipsters to make sure that the tips are up-to-date and corrected before they go live.
{{tip of the day }} – the borderless version, with lightbulb.
{{tip of the day with h3 heading }} – the tip in heading/paragraph format (No light bulb).
{{totd2 }} – the borderless version used on Wikipedia's Help page (which already has its own borders). (No lightbulb).
{{totd CP }} – like the help page version, but with a box & light bulb. Spans the whole field (screen or column) that it is in.
{{totd-static }} – like the totd version but the date is static. You have to manually change the date. Good for testing purposes.
Random tip [ edit ]
The following template {{Totd-random }} is for Wikipedians who can't wait until tomorrow for their next tip! It presents a random tip each time you reload the page it is presented on:

To search a specific namespace, include the prefix in searches
To search for a topic in a specific namespace, precede the topic with that namespace's prefix, followed by a colon. If the topic has a page with that name, pressing Enter will take you right to it. Otherwise, a list of relevant search results will appear.
For example, one way to get a listing of articles on ancient Greece is to type Category:Ancient Greece in the search box. To go to the portal for the Ancient Greeks, you would type: Portal:Ancient Greece .
The namespace prefixes are: Category:, Portal:, File:, User:, Talk:, Wikipedia:, Help:, Book:, Draft:, and Template:
.
You can also search in sister projects by using the full name of the sister project, or its abbreviation (e.g.- Wiktionary:
or wikt:
).
To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd-random }}

How to insert a picture into an article
The syntax used for displaying an image is:
[[File:{name}|{type}|{location}|{size}|{alt=}|{caption}]]
Only [[File:{name}]] parameter is required.
Do not put spaces between parameters. The other parameters are optional and can be placed in any order. Some infoboxes do not require the brackets. Keep parameters in lower case. The other parameters are:
Type
'thumb' / 'thumbnail' or 'frame'. This causes image to be displayed with specific formatting. "thumb" is normally preferred.
Location
'right', 'left', 'center' or 'none'. Determines placement of the image on the page. "Left" or "right" is the norm, but large panoramas or timelines can be displayed in the center.
Size
{width}px or {width}x{height}px (e.g. 50x40px, would limit width to 50 pixels and height to 40 pixels). Normally only one variable is used. Use common sense when determining the sizes; you can use the "Show preview" button if you need to. If thumb or thumbnail is chosen, size should normally be left out, so that the size defaults to the size set in a user's preferences .
alt=
(keep it lower case). This is the "alternate image" parameter used to describe the image for screenreaders or for people with low-vision. It should be more descriptive than the caption alone. Do not use this for another copy of the caption or of the article title, as the reader will already be aware of these.
Caption
Any element which cannot be identified as one of the above is automatically treated as caption text. It is traditional to put this last. The caption should identify what the image is, and ideally be a complete sentence that adds to the article by pointing out something a casual reader would not have noticed otherwise, or add information the pertains to the image. Full sentence or multi fragment captions require full stop punctuation .
If you have a picture that is not already in Wikipedia's image collection on the Commons that you want to include in an article, you will need to upload it first . Bonus tip: Similar formatting is used to insert basic audio or basic video clips in to articles.
To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd-tomorrow }}
