Salif Keita - Souareba
Souareba is a tribute to the mansas (kings) of the Mali Empire. As a mansa descendant himself (Salif is the direct descendant of of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita) singing of the mansas, this is the ultimate hommage. Known as "the Golden Voice of Africa", Salif´s natural talent for music had to go through a very tough childhood as he was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism, a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. As a child he suffered greatly from social isolation, and was even kicked out of school because of his albinism, as well as suffering from the fierce African sun. In addition, his royal heritage meant that under the Malian caste system, he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be a role only for griots. All this things make Salif Keita unique, and he already is a legend and a cult musician around the world. In December 2004, he was named United Nations Ambassador for Music and Sports and dedicated himself to causes like Malaria, AIDS and the plight of Albinos in Mali and around the world. With his Olympic medal winning albino niece, one of his children born albino and the memory of the loss of his albino sister from skin cancer a decade prior, Mr. Keita founded The Salif Keita Global Foundation in 2005 to raise awareness and money for free healthcare and educational services for the care and integration of Albinos in Africa and to create international advocacy for the plight of people ...

Ana Na Ming (It's Been So Long)
The song "Ana Na Ming" is taken from Salif Keita's album "Moffou Dia". Salif Keïta (born in 1949) is an albinos and a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. This royal heritage meant that under the Malian caste system, he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be a griot's role. His music combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas, while maintaining an overall blues feel on an Islamic style. Composed and written by Salif Keita Lyrics "Ana Na Ming" (It's been too long") ----------------------------------------------- My love My love told me My love Said that... She doesn't want love She said she wants marriage She wants marriage She doesn't know what it is She doesn't want love I told her I don't want marriage If she doesn't want love ... Who will help me? Who will help me? I went out last night In the moon light I went out To the river I thought of my love What did I hear? What did I hear? It's making a lot of noise ... The river is crying It's making noise Fish are "jumping" in the river Who will help me? Who will help me? Childbearing women Women who bear children My mothers Forgive me My mother is a woman Forgive me Forgive me One bears a child That child doesn't gain from you You might get a child And not gain from that child You might not bear a child But gain from that child Who will help me? Who will help me? Who will help me? Who will help me? Honey I fell in love ...

TV5 Acoustic - Salif Keita Live In Studio (1st min. missing - May 2010)
Giant among world music stars brings forth some of his African fusion gems with his grooving band. From Wikipedia.org (Condensed): "Salif Keïta (born August 25, 1949) is an afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is unique not only because of his reputation as the "Golden Voice of Africa" but because he has albinism and is a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. This royal heritage meant that under the Malian caste system, he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be a griot's role. Keita was born in the village of Djoliba. He was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism, a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture.[1] He left Djoliba for Bamako in 1967, where he joined the government sponsored Super Rail Band de Bamako. In 1973 Keita joined the group, Les Ambassadeurs. Keita and Les Ambassadeurs fled political unrest in Mali during the mid-1970s for Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire and subsequently changed the group's name to "Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux". The reputation of Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux rose to the international level in the 1970s and in 1977. Keita received a National Order award from the president of Guinea, Sékou Touré. Keita moved to Paris in 1984 to reach a larger audience. His music combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas, while maintaining an overall Islamic style. Musical instruments that are commonly featured in ...

Nahawa Doumbia - Banani (Mali)
Nahawa Doumbia is one of the most popular singers from the Wassoulou region in South Mali. She speaks to the younger generation of West Africa through her lyrics about love, the position of women in Malian society, and the plight of the African refugees in France. Her voice soars to didadi, a lilting dance rhythm from her native Wassoulou region; added to the musical mix are the jazz and techno samples of French DJ Frédéric Galliano. Traditional instruments -bala, kamele ngoni, and jembe- along with bass and acoustic guitar back up Nahawa's vibrant vocals. Nahawa Doumbia was born in the small town of Mafélé, in the Sikasso region (next to the Ivory Coast's border). Her grandmother had to raise the newborn because Nahawa's mother died shortly after giving birth. Nahawa Doumbia's grandmother lived in Manankoro, near Bougouni, the most important city in the Wassoulou region (south of Bamako, Mali's capital). The Wassoulou region is well known for generating some of the best singers in Mali, like Oumou Sangare, Sali Sidibe or Dieneba Diakité. Even though Nahawa Doumbia's family was not part of the jali tradition (the Manding caste that performs music), Nahawa's mother predicted before she died that her daughter would be a singer. This is something that her family tried to prevent, resorting to the magical powers of blacksmiths, but to no effect. The young Malian woman was discovered by civil servants from the Ministry of Culture when she was singing with her friends. Despite ...

As a cultural troupe they performed for and with movements led by Medha Patkar and Bhai Vaidya as well as with groups from the working class movement. Around last year the state began to brand them as Naxalites. Today while Deepak Dengle and Siddharth Bhonsle of KKM are in prison, many other members including lead singer-poets Sheetal Sathe, Sagar Gorkhe and Sachin Mali have gone underground after threats from the police. All are charged with being Naxalites and the ATS is using an uncritical media to plant regular allegations against the KKM. Even these allegations do not accuse the KKM of any violence, but are dependent mainly ...

THE Docummentary 2009 cruisinwithkenny"s Oaxaca Mexico NUDE HIPPIE BEACH COOL JAM ON BONGO"S AND jimba Djembes, AS THE SUN SET ... BEACH NO NO ... NO"S ALL There is general agreement that the origin of the djembe is associated with the Mandinka caste of blacksmiths, known as Numu. The wide dispersion of the djembe drum throughout West Africa may be due to Numu migrations during the first millennium AD.[2] Despite the association of the djembe with the Numu, there are no hereditary restrictions on who may become a djembefola (literally, "one who plays the djembe"). This is in contrast to instruments whose use is reserved for members of the griot caste, such as the balafon, kora, and ngoni.[5] (The djembe is not a griot instrument.) Anyone who plays djembe is a djembefola—the term does not imply a particular level of skill. Geographically, the traditional distribution of the djembe is associated with the Mali Empire,[6] which dates back to 1230 AD and included parts of the modern-day countries of Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, and Senegal. However, due to the lack of written records in West African countries, it is unclear whether the djembe predates or postdates the Mali Empire. It seems likely that the history of the djembe reaches back for at least several centuries, and possibly more than a millennium.[5] The goblet shape of the djembe suggests that it originally may have been created from a mortar. (Mortars are widely used throughout West Africa for ...
