Qatif or Al-Qatif -- also spelled Qateef or Al-Qateef -- is one of the largest and oldest oases in the world, dating back to 3,500 BC in the late Bronze Age, famous for its springs and palm trees and the large Shi'i community that has caused much tension located on the western shore of the Persian Gulf in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
It's a green oasis surrounded by a jungle of palm trees with rich agricultural soil. Springs are abundant in the Oasis of Qatif, with some springs found in the midst of its waters. On the west lies the Al-Dahna Desert with its golden sands intermingled with small rocky heights, and the Persian Gulf to the east with its warm and calm waters rich of marine life and pearls.
Qatif functioned as the main town and port in this region of the Gulf for centuries, and was famous for spear making. It was called Cateus by the Greeks, and some early European maps labeled the entire present-day Persian Gulf as the «Sea of El Catif».
Qatif oasis and the nearby island of Tarout are some of the most interesting tourist and archeological sites in the Kingdom.
An amazing site not to be missed is the Tarut Citadel, built over 5000-year old settlements, constructed around 1515 to 1521 AD, with its hidden passages and high towers that were used to protect the city from Portuguese attackers.

A bomber blew up his explosives during Friday prayers at a mosque in Qadih village in the Qatif region. People were commemorating the birth of the third Shia Imam. At least 20 people have been killed and over 70 others injured. The death toll is expected to rise as at least 150 people were praying in the mosque when the bomb went off. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Qatif is home to Saudi Arabia’s Shia minority. There have long been tensions between the Shia minority in Saudi Arabia and the government. Riyadh has launched a harsh crackdown on protests in the oil-rich region since 2011.

People in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province have rallied to honor top cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr who was executed by the Saudi regime.
The black-clad protesters in the cities of Awamiyah and Qatif held placards of Sheikh Nimr and three other executed Shia activists. They chanted slogans against Al Saud dynasty. Awamiyah is the hometown of Sheikh Nimr whose execution sparked an angry outcry, and anti-Saudi demonstrations in many countries. Anger is rising in the oil-rich Eastern Province since Saturday, when Saudi authorities killed the Sheikh and three Shia political detainees along with 43 other convicts.

Qatif or Al-Qatif (Arabic: القطيف Al-Qaṭīf) is a governorate and urban area located in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. It extends from Ras Tanura and Jubail in the north to Dammam in the south, and from the Persian Gulf in the east to King Fahd International Airport in the west. This region has its own municipality and includes the Qatif downtown and many other smaller cities and towns.
Qatif is one of the oldest settlements in the eastern side of the Arabian peninsula, its history going back to 3500 BC. Qatifi people used to work as merchants, farmers, and fishers. However, in recent years,[when?] after the discovery of oil and establishment of Jubail Industrial City, most of Qatifi's people are working in oil, industry, public services, education and health care sectors.
The historic oasis area shows its first archeological evidence of settlement beginning about 3500 BC. It was known by other names, such as Al-Khatt (Arabic: الخَطّ), immortalized in the poetry of `Antara ibn Shaddad, Tarafa ibn Al-`Abd, Bashar ibn Burd (in his famous Ba'yya), and others. The word "Khatty" became the preferred "kenning" for "spear" in traditional poetic writing until the dawn of the modern era, supposedly because the region was famous for spear making, just as "muhannad" ("of India") was the preferred kenning for "sword". The older name also survives as the eponym of several well-known local families ("Al-Khatti", spelled variously in English).[citation needed]

May 22, 2015 - A deadly blast has ripped through a Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. A bomber blew up his explosives during Friday prayers at a mosque in Qadih village in the Qatif region. People were commemorating the birth of the third Shia Imam. At least 20 people have been killed and over 70 others injured. The death toll is expected to rise as at least 150 people were praying in the mosque when the bomb went off. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Qatif is home to Saudi Arabia’s Shia minority. There have long been tensions between the Shia minority in Saudi Arabia and the government. Riyadh has launched a harsh crackdown on protests in the oil-rich region since 2011.

The black-clad protesters in the cities of Awamiyah and Qatif held placards of Sheikh Nimr and three other executed Shia activists. They chanted slogans against Al Saud dynasty. Awamiyah is the hometown of Sheikh Nimr whose execution sparked an angry outcry, and anti-Saudi demonstrations in many countries. Anger is rising in the oil-rich Eastern Province since Saturday, when Saudi authorities killed the Sheikh and three Shia political detainees along with 43 other convicts.
