In which John compares and contrasts Greek civilization and the Persian Empire. Of course we're glad that Greek civilization spawned modern western civilization, right? Maybe not. From Socrates and Plato to Darius and Xerxes, John explains two of the great powers of the ancient world, all WITHOUT the use of footage from 300. The Greco-Persian Wars (also often called the Persian Wars) were a series of conflicts between the Achaemenid Empire of Persia (modern day Iran) and Greek city-states that started in 499 BC and lasted until 449 BC. The collision between the fractious political world of the Greeks and the enormous empire of the Persians began when Cyrus the Great conquered the Greek-inhabited region of Ionia in 547 BC.
The Greco-Persian wars saw some of the greatest and most famous battles in history; the battle of Marathon, the battle of Thermoplae, the battle of Salamis. However, the war didn't start for no reason, it was the rebellion of Ionian cities in Asia minor, and the subsequent support from Athens that lead to the invasion of Greece in 492BC. This video provides an overview of the rebellion, showing the different campaigns and battles within the rebellion.
The Persian Wars were fought between the Greeks and Persians over two thousand years ago. Their battles originated for many of the same reasons wars happen today - resources, pride, revenge and prejudice. Enjoy the video! Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoFWz1e3VXKOoJ-E5cep1Eg

The Battle of Plataea began the next phase of the Greco-Persian wars; the Greek Counter attack. After the remaining Persian troops were defeated, the Greeks were free to reclaim the territories they lost and, eventually, drive the Persian into Asia Minor. As such it was the most important land battle of the Greco-Persian Wars, despite the Battle of Marathon being by far the most famous.

This show focuses on the Battle of Marathon, the ill-fated invasion of Greece by Persian king Darius I. The Battle of Marathon (Greek: Μάχη τοῦ Μαραθῶνος, Machē tu Marathōnos) took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. The first Persian invasion was a response to Greek involvement in the Ionian Revolt, when Athens and Eretria had sent a force to support the cities of Ionia in their attempt to overthrow Persian rule. The Athenians a...
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Kagan examines in detail the development, growing pains, and emergence of Athenian democracy. He argues that the tyranny under the Peisistratids led to the development of the idea of self-government among the Athenians, which Cleisthenes used to develop Athens in a more democratic direction. One of the ways Cleisthenes was able to accomplish this was to diminish the power of the aristocracy by reordering and restructuring the tribes and giving greater power to the assembly. Finally, Professor Kagan says a word on the Athenian practice of ostracism as a political tool to protect a fledgling democracy. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Consequences of Tyranny to Greek Life 12:31 - Chapter 2. Cleisthenes's Coup d'État 23:20 ...

Alexander the Great - History Channel Documentary. The true story of Alexander the Great (king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and member of the Argead dynasty) and the Macedonian Empire, which introduced the Hellenistic Period of ancient Greek civilization. Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, 356 BCE - 323 BCE: "Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you." (Alexander's letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea, as quoted in "Anabasis Alexandri" by Roman historian Arrian, Book 2.14.4, Greek original: “οἱ ὑμέτεροι πρόγονοι ἐλθόντες εἰς Μακεδονίαν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἄλλην Ἑλλάδ...
