Mulberry harbour

Mulberry harbours were temporary portable harbours developed by the British during World War II to facilitate the rapid offloading of cargo onto beaches during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. After successfully holding beachheads following D-Day two prefabricated harbours were taken in sections across the English Channel from Britain with the invading army and assembled off Omaha and Gold Beach.

The Mulberry harbours were to be used until the Allies could capture a French port, initially thought to be around three months. However, it was not until six months after D-Day that the Belgian port of Antwerp was captured that use of the harbour at Gold Beach lessened. It was used for 10 months after D-Day and over 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tonnes of supplies were landed using it before it was fully decommissioned. The Mulberry harbour at Omaha Beach had been severely damaged in a storm in late June 1944 and was abandoned.

There is conjecture about who actually came up with the idea, but the key plans for the design for the harbours were drawn by Welsh engineer Hugh Iorys Hughes.

Morus (plant)

Morus, a genus of flowering plants in the family Moraceae, comprises 10–16 species of deciduous trees commonly known as mulberries, growing wild and under cultivation in many temperate world regions.

The closely related genus Broussonetia is also commonly known as mulberry, notably the paper mulberry, Broussonetia papyrifera. Mulberries are fast-growing when young, but soon become slow-growing and rarely exceed 10–15 m (33–49 ft) tall. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple and often lobed; lobes are more common on juvenile shoots than on mature trees. The leaves are serrated on the margin.

The trees can be monoecious or dioecious. The mulberry fruit is a multiple fruit, 2–3 cm (0.79–1.18 in) long. Immature fruits are white, green, or pale yellow. In most species the fruits turn pink and then red while ripening, then dark purple or black, and have a sweet flavor when fully ripe. The fruits of the white-fruited cultivar are white when ripe; the fruit of this cultivar is also sweet, but has a very bland flavor compared with darker varieties.

Mulberry (email client)

Mulberry is a formerly proprietary, now open sourced email client marketed by Cyrusoft from approximately 1995 to 2005. On October 1, 2005, Cyrusoft International, Inc./ISAMET, declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy and went out of business. In August 2006, rights to the source code were acquired by Cyrus Daboo, the original author.

Originally developed for the Apple Macintosh, versions now exist for that platform as well as Microsoft Windows and Linux using the X window system. Mulberry's strengths include strict compliance with Internet standards such as IMAP, LDAP, IMSP, ACAP, and iCalendar, a unique GUI for defining Sieve (mail filtering language) scripts and support for IMAP disconnected operation.

As of August 20, 2006, with version 4.0.5, Mulberry was made available at no cost, but remained proprietary. The most recent version, 4.0.8, was released for Macintosh (as a Universal Binary), Windows, and Linux on February 23, 2007. However, Cyrus Daboo made Mulberry available as open source on all three platforms on November 21, 2007, under the terms of the Apache License 2.0.

Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions

Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions is the second of three experimental albums of avant-garde music released by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in May 1969 on Zapple, a sub label of Apple. It was a successor to 1968's highly controversial Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins, and was followed by the Wedding Album. The album peaked in the United States at number 174. The album, whose title is a play on words of the BBC Radio show Life with The Lyons, was recorded at Queen Charlotte's Hospital in London and live at Cambridge University, in November 1968 and March 1969, respectively. The Cambridge performance, to which Ono had been invited and to which she brought Lennon, was Lennon and Ono's second as a couple. A few of the album's tracks were previewed by the public, thanks to Aspen magazine. The album was remastered in 1997.
