Historians broadly agree that the first true dictionary was created by Sir Thomas Elyot who published a book called a Dictionary in 1538 while working for Henry VIII. Johnson’s later work far superseded this by being the most comprehensive and detailed collection of the English language to date. Johnson’s dictionary was the ‘go to’ reference for the English language until the publication of the first Oxford English Dictionary in 1888 – 173 years after Johnson published his.
Johnson’s finished dictionary contained 42,773 words, each of which featured a number of notes on their specific usage. Perhaps most astounding is the fact that Johnson wrote the entire dictionary himself, taking 9 years to do so, and earning the modern equivalent of £210,000 British pounds for his efforts. His biographer, Walter Jackson Bate, described the work as ‘one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship’.
Despite the impact of Johnson’s dictionary, it created a number of problems that have been inherited by the modern English language. Most significantly, Johnson’s spellings have become the standard format despite there being a number of inconsistencies in his use of particular letter orders and sounds.
Johnson himself was well aware of the shortcomings of his work and the fact that he would face such criticisms. In a letter to an Italian lexicographer in 1784 he stated that ‘dictionaries are like watches: the worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite true.’

The Basics of Prescriptive vs Descriptive Linguistics
A short overview of a hotly debated topic. Should language function through a set of official guidelines and rules or does language belong to its speakers?
Prescriptive = language should follow a set structure of rules.
Descriptive = language should follow what sounds right to a majority of speakers.
If you want to drive into linguistics in much, much greater detail, Steven Pinker's The Sense of Style is a great place to start.

How can a linguist teach prescriptive grammar? | “Thoughts On” ep 1
In this episode, Marc Franco explains how he reconciles supporting a descriptive approach to grammar as a linguist and teaching prescriptive grammar, which opposes the ideas of a flexible grammar based on use rather than strict rules.
In the “Thoughts On...” series, Marc Franco talks about his thoughts and ideas on subjects related to language, linguistics, sociolinguistics. He also discusses his insights not only as a linguist but also as an experienced educator. Sometimes it gets pretty serious; other times, it can be plain silly and playful.

Come with me
Close your eyes and touch what greets you there
Reaching out

LYRICS
Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world crashing all around your face (let me hear you)
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace (c'mon)
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference
And it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
I made a pilgrimage to save this human race
Never comprehending the race has long gone by (c'mon)
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference
And it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
The future's open wide
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I've seen some changes
But it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you, yeah
The future's open wide
Let's sing along
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
(Woah woah woah woah woah)
Woah woah woah
Woah woah woah woah (pathetic, absolutely pathetic)
Woah woah woah
Woah woah woah woah
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference
And it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you

LYRICS
Come with me
Close your eyes and touch what greets you there
Reaching out
Stretch your hands across the sea
Come with me
Close your eyes and touch what meets you there
Reaching out
Stretch your hands across the sea
Sitting in my room, nothing much to say
I heard you calling a thousand miles away
I did not mean to hurt you, you took me by surprise
There is still a chance if we just close our eyes
Oh lady
Come with me
Close your eyes and touch what greets you there
Reaching out
Stretch your hands across the sea
Come with me
Close your eyes and touch what meets you there
Reaching out
Stretch your hands across the sea
I can't explain this feeling
I won't begin to try
There is still a chance if we just close our eyes
