A microorganism (from the Greek: μικρός, mikros, "small" and ὀργανισμός, organismós, "organism") is a microscopic living organism, which may be single celled or multicellular. The study of microorganisms is called microbiology, a subject that began with the discovery of microorganisms in 1674 by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, using a microscope of his own design.
Microorganisms are very diverse and include all bacterial, archaean and most of the protozoan species on the planet. This group also contains some species of fungi, algae, and certain animals, such as rotifers. Many macroscopic animals and plants have microscopic juvenile stages. Some microbiologists also classify viruses (and viroids) as microorganisms, but others consider these as nonliving.

The age old questions remain- Where did we come from? How did life begin? Was the world always like this? Were there humans millions of years ago? Is it possible for us to have evolved from microbes, small creatures that we can't even see without a microscope! Life is indeed strange. We at Byju's Classes strongly believe that a spirit of learning and understanding can only be inculcated when the student is curious, and that curiosity can be brought about by creative and effective teaching. It is this approach that makes our lectures so successful and gives our students an edge over their counterparts. We are all surrounded by microorganisms, they live on us within us and around us, they affect everything we do, yet most people have no idea what they look like. Using the latest technology it is possible to see into this normally invisible world
Microorganisms that cause illnesses also affect water quality. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that cannot be seen with the human eye except through a microscope. Some kinds of bacteria are the most dangerous microorganisms. They usually get into water supplies when untreated sewage mixes with the water supply. Types of Microorganisms Microorganisms can be, according to their characteristics, divided into several groups: bacteria, viruses, certain fungi and parasites pathogenic (capable of causing disease), non-pathogenic, and opportunistic (causing disease when they have an opportunity, like in people with low immune system) acellular (without cell, like viruses), unicellular (bacteria, yeasts and certain parasites), or multi-cellular (molds)
When crew on the Mir space station open a rarely used service panel, they come face to face with a floating liquid ball filled with microorganisms.
