Madame du Barry, 8th December 1793
Jeanne Bécu was born in Vaucouleurs on the 19th August 1743, the illegitimate daughter of a gorgeous seamstress and a friar. It was a shocking beginning to what was to be a scandalous life.
Jeanne, dragged up by her mother then fortuitiously sent to a convent school by a wealthy benefactor, was to grow up to be exceedingly beautious with a lovely face, tumbling blonde hair and meltingly seductive violet eyes. Sadly, her fiscal prospects were non existant and the presence of protective adults was minimal so the young Jeanne after an initial attempt to train as a milliner soon found herself working in a casino come brothel.
She was 'rescued' from this life by a noted roué, the spurious comte du Barry who installed her as his mistress then launched her career as a high class courtesan to men of the court. Jeanne does not appear to have been adverse to this life, being untroubled by too much in the way of morals and blessed with a budding taste for expensive luxuries.
She did very well for herself until 1768 when on a visit to Versailles, she came to the attention of another aged roué, Louis XV who, always prone to depression, had been in a protracted state of bored gloom ever since the death of his exquisite mistress, Madame de Pompadour. He'd ignored all of his courtiers attempts to divert his attention with various beautiful and well born ladies of the court and had instead consoled himself with the less demanding charms of servant girls and young women who were housed in his private brothel in Versailles.
He was instantly smitten by the young Jeanne and it wasn't long before her lover du Barry's brother was forced to marry her in order to make her position more respectable and enable her to have the title that was so necessary for an entrée to Versailles life. After this there was no stopping her and to the horror of all, the King even installed her in apartments in the palace. No one in Versailles had any illusions about the origins of the latest favourite, lovely thought she was. They'd all sneered at the middle class origins of Madame de Pompadour, so you can imagine how they felt about having Madame du Barry prancing around in their midst, dressed up in pink silk and exquisite lace and covered in the diamonds that she adored so much.
In 1772, the infatuated Louis XV requested that Parisian jewellers Boehmer & Bassenge create an elaborate and spectacular jeweled necklace for du Barry, one that would surpass all known others in grandeur, at an estimated cost of two million livres. The necklace, still not completed nor paid for when Louis XV died, would eventually trigger a scandal involving Jeanne de la Motte-Valois, in which Queen Marie Antoinette would be wrongly accused of bribing the Cardinal de Rohan, Archbishop of Strasbourg in the Alsace, to purchase it for her, accusations which would figure prominently in the onset of the French Revolution.
The good times didn't last for long however as in May 1774, Louis XV died of small pox in his room at Versailles and Madame du Barry, who was loathed by his young and rather prudish grandson and heir Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette was promptly sent away from court and at first compelled to enter a convent, although she did not remain there for long.
Madame du Barry was never again received at court but does not seem to have regretted this exile too much as she had her own beautiful chateau at Louveciennes and seems to have lived there very happily throughout the rest of the 1780s, taking one lover after another, patronising artists and being a lady bountiful to the local people.
She did her best to live out the revolution in relative obscurity but her fame as one of Louis XV's most extravagant mistresses and also, as usual, her total lack of proper advice and support were to be her downfall.
On the night of the 10th January 1791, a significant amount of the Comtesse's jewelery collection had been stolen from her bedroom and she had moved heaven and earth in an attempt to retrieve it, which necessitated offering a reward and several trips to England. If she had only remained in London, where she had friends, then she would have been safe and would have come to no harm. However, not being too bright, she always returned to France and eventually these trips brought her to the attention of the hostile authorities, who were hardly likely to be sympathetic about her tale of stolen diamonds.
It was not long before she was arrested, in March 1793 and then imprisoned in Paris. When she was sentenced to death in December 1793.

Madame du Barry, 8th December 1793 Jeanne Bécu was born in Vaucouleurs on the 19th August 1743, the illegitimate daughter of a gorgeous seamstress and a friar. It was a shocking beginning to what was to be a scandalous life. Jeanne, dragged up by her mother then fortuitiously sent to a convent school by a wealthy benefactor, was to grow up to be exceedingly beautious with a lovely face, tumbling blonde hair and meltingly seductive violet eyes. Sadly, her fiscal prospects were non existant and the presence of protective adults was minimal so the young Jeanne after an initial attempt to train as a milliner soon found herself working in a casino come brothel. Jeanne, dragged up by her mother then fortuitiously sent to a convent school by a wealthy benefactor, was to grow up to be exceedingly beautious with a lovely face, tumbling blonde hair and meltingly seductive violet eyes. Sadly, her fiscal prospects were non existant and the presence of protective adults was minimal so the young Jeanne after an initial attempt to train as a milliner soon found herself working in a casino come brothel.
She was 'rescued' from this life by a noted roué, the spurious comte du Barry who installed her as his mistress then launched her career as a high class courtesan to men of the court. Jeanne does not appear to have been adverse to this life, being untroubled by too much in the way of morals and blessed with a budding taste for expensive luxuries.
She did very well for herself until 1768 when on a visit to Versailles, she came to the attention of another aged roué, Louis XV who, always prone to depression, had been in a protracted state of bored gloom ever since the death of his exquisite mistress, Madame de Pompadour. He'd ignored all of his courtiers attempts to divert his attention with various beautiful and well born ladies of the court and had instead consoled himself with the less demanding charms of servant girls and young women who were housed in his private brothel in Versailles.
He was instantly smitten by the young Jeanne and it wasn't long before her lover du Barry's brother was forced to marry her in order to make her position more respectable and enable her to have the title that was so necessary for an entrée to Versailles life. After this there was no stopping her and to the horror of all, the King even installed her in apartments in the palace. No one in Versailles had any illusions about the origins of the latest favourite, lovely thought she was. They'd all sneered at the middle class origins of Madame de Pompadour, so you can imagine how they felt about having Madame du Barry prancing around in their midst, dressed up in pink silk and exquisite lace and covered in the diamonds that she adored so much.
In 1772, the infatuated Louis XV requested that Parisian jewellers Boehmer & Bassenge create an elaborate and spectacular jeweled necklace for du Barry, one that would surpass all known others in grandeur, at an estimated cost of two million livres. The necklace, still not completed nor paid for when Louis XV died, would eventually trigger a scandal involving Jeanne de la Motte-Valois, in which Queen Marie Antoinette would be wrongly accused of bribing the Cardinal de Rohan, Archbishop of Strasbourg in the Alsace, to purchase it for her, accusations which would figure prominently in the onset of the French Revolution.
The good times didn't last for long however as in May 1774, Louis XV died of small pox in his room at Versailles and Madame du Barry, who was loathed by his young and rather prudish grandson and heir Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette was promptly sent away from court and at first compelled to enter a convent, although she did not remain there for long.
Madame du Barry was never again received at court but does not seem to have regretted this exile too much as she had her own beautiful chateau at Louveciennes and seems to have lived there very happily throughout the rest of the 1780s, taking one lover after another, patronising artists and being a lady bountiful to the local people.
She did her best to live out the revolution in relative obscurity but her fame as one of Louis XV's most extravagant mistresses and also, as usual, her total lack of proper advice and support were to be her downfall.
On the night of the 10th January 1791, a significant amount of the Comtesse's jewelery collection had been stolen from her bedroom and she had moved heaven and earth in an attempt to retrieve it, which necessitated offering a reward and several trips to England. If she had only remained in London, where she had friends, then she would have been safe and would have come to no harm. However, not being too bright, she always returned to France and eventually these trips brought her to the attention of the hostile authorities, who were hardly likely to be sympathetic about her tale of stolen diamonds.
It was not long before she was arrested, in March 1793 and then imprisoned in Paris. When she was sentenced to death in December 1793.

Hello dear youtube friends !! FIRST, FORGIVE ME FOR THE BAD QUALITY OF THE VIDEO !! It's a 1938's film !! However, i wanted to do a fandub of one of my favourite scenes about Marie Antoinette (Norma Shearer) and Madame du Barry (Gladys Georges). OMG, i've wanted to see that movie for two years. I've looked for it everywhere on internet, shops... and one day, my dad me announced a great new : It would be diffused ! In english, but with french subtitles !! WHAOUH !!! I was so excited !! My dad and me are both in love with History, and especially French Revolution. Sometimes, we can talk about it for a long time. It's one of my favourite topic, actually ! But don't worry, i love talking about many others things, lol !! Anyway, this movie lasts 2h30. It seems long but for me, it's still too short, lol !! I have a great adapation of French Revolution who lasts five hours and i adoooooore it too !! In that 1938's version, there are many history mistakes but as i often say, an history film is a great amusement but a book is better to know very well history. But i don't say everything is wrong in films, of course. In that version, Marie Antoinette and Mme du Barry are talking for a while. In reality, Marie Antoinette says to Madame du Barry 'Il y a beaucoup de monde aujourd'hui à Versailles" and that's ALL !! Many courtiers finded her foolish to tell such thing ! It was like she was stupid, didn't have any conversation. But Marie Antoinette, in telling so, was much more clever because i think she meant "some people shouldn't be in Versailles" in refering Madame du Barry. In french, i call that "un sous-entendu" when we say something and in reality, we're thinking about something else.
Another mistake : in the movie, Madame du Barry is refering the Duke of Orleans, that "friend" of Marie Antoinette. In reality, Marie Antoinette never had good relationships with him.
I love that scene very much, especially because i find very funny the way Marie Antoinette and Madame du Barry moke each other with smiles and "kindness" looooooool !! I precise that film (on my knowledge) doesn't exist in french !! I dubbed it in french thanks to french subtitles i have on my video and that i know by heart, hihi !! GOD BLESS MARIE ANTOINETTE AND MADAME DU BARRY !! I LOVE THEM BOTH !!!
Don't be deceived ! In this film, Lady Oscar and Sofia Coppola's film, Madame du Barry is shown like a shrew but read books and you'll see she's a sweet and kind lady. And although i love Marie Antoinette, i think the behaviour she had against Madame du Barry is not fair.
Anyway, after that long writing, i hope you'll enjoy it and that you"ll comment !! Kiss, Flore

I know some people don't like Mme du Barry because she has a negative image in the manga and Sofia Coppola's film and some other fictions, but i don't care ! :D
I read about her, and i trust more books than fictions to learn how was a character in history :) I love Madame du Barry !! I admire her because she was so beautiful, generous, clever and brave :) But what i love the most about Madame du Barry was her joyful temper :D !! And for me, Madame du Barry is a true Lady, and is the proof that nobility is not a question of blood but heart :)
I love that scene because here, Mme du Barry shows she was not the evil woman we could see in the previous episodes of Lady Oscar and we can understand her better :) !

• La Régence
Le nom de Régence désigne en France la période de minorité de Louis XV, pendant laquelle le pouvoir, au sein du royaume de France, a été exercé par le prince de sang Philippe d’Orléans.
En 1715, Louis XIV laissait pour successeur un enfant de cinq ans. Louis XV succéda à son arrière-grand-père, le Roi Soleil, qui avait fait de la France la première puissance européenne. Pendant les huit années qui suivirent, le duc d’Orléans, neveu du défunt roi, assura la Régence.
La Régence fut marquée par une violente réaction contre tout ce qui avait caractérisé la fin du règne précédent. Versailles fut provisoirement délaissé.
• Le système de Law
À la mort de Louis XIV, le Trésor était vide et les revenus des deux années suivantes étaient déjà dépensés. Dans le but de résoudre cette crise monétaire, le système de l’économiste écossais Law, devenu Contrôleur général des Finances en 1720, visait à augmenter la masse monétaire en ayant recours à la création et à la généralisation du papier-monnaie. Cette réforme devait produire une hausse d’activité commerciale ainsi que l’extinction progressive de la dette publique. Law va donc introduire le papier-monnaie en 1716 et créer une banque privée qui deviendra la Banque Royale en 1718. Les actions montant en flèche, leur valeur baissa. Pris de peur, le public perdit confiance dans les billets et exigea leur remboursement en or et en argent. La valeur des billets émis dépassant de beaucoup l’encaisse de la banque, celle-ci fit faillite et Law prit la fuite. Le système avait donc échoué. Le commerce maritime en avait reçu une vive impulsion, mais en France la confiance du public dans les banques fut détruite pour longtemps.
• Louis XV (1723-1774)
Au début de 1723, Louis XV fut déclaré roi. Franck FERRAND et son invitée, Evelyne LEVER, évoquent la belle époque de la Régence et des premières années du règne de Louis XV. Nous sommes dans les années 1720, 1730, années de paix, de prospérité, de légèreté. Ce qui n’exclut pas quelques crises. Nous allons revivre les grands événements de cette époque insouciante, à commencer par la plus grande crise bancaire après celle que nous vivons en ce moment.
• La Régence
Le nom de Régence désigne en France la période de minorité de Louis XV, pendant laquelle le pouvoir, au sein du royaume de France, a été exercé par le prince de sang Philippe d’Orléans.
En 1715, Louis XIV laissait pour successeur un enfant de cinq ans. Louis XV succéda à son arrière-grand-père, le Roi Soleil, qui avait fait de la France la première puissance européenne. Pendant les huit années qui suivirent, le duc d’Orléans, neveu du défunt roi, assura la Régence.
La Régence fut marquée par une violente réaction contre tout ce qui avait caractérisé la fin du règne précédent. Versailles fut provisoirement délaissé.
• Le système de Law
À la mort de Louis XIV, le Trésor était vide et les revenus des deux années suivantes étaient déjà dépensés. Dans le but de résoudre cette crise monétaire, le système de l’économiste écossais Law, devenu Contrôleur général des Finances en 1720, visait à augmenter la masse monétaire en ayant recours à la création et à la généralisation du papier-monnaie. Cette réforme devait produire une hausse d’activité commerciale ainsi que l’extinction progressive de la dette publique. Law va donc introduire le papier-monnaie en 1716 et créer une banque privée qui deviendra la Banque Royale en 1718. Les actions montant en flèche, leur valeur baissa. Pris de peur, le public perdit confiance dans les billets et exigea leur remboursement en or et en argent. La valeur des billets émis dépassant de beaucoup l’encaisse de la banque, celle-ci fit faillite et Law prit la fuite. Le système avait donc échoué. Le commerce maritime en avait reçu une vive impulsion, mais en France la confiance du public dans les banques fut détruite pour longtemps.
• Louis XV (1723-1774)
Au début de 1723, Louis XV fut déclaré roi. Her only other first billed roles were in Madame X (1937) and Love is a Headache. She also appeared in The Roaring Twenties (1939), The Way of All Flesh (1940), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and He Ran All the Way (1951). She played the widow of Miles Archer (Iva Archer) in The Maltese Falcon and Mme. Du Barry in Marie Antoinette.
Her last successful roles were as Lute Mae Sanders in Flamingo Road, her brief appearance as the corrupt nurse Miss Hatch in Detective Story (1951) and in Lullaby of Broadway, as the alcoholic mother of Doris Day's ingenue character.
George was afflicted with numerous ailments, including throat cancer, heart disease, and cirrhosis of the liver. She died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1954 in Los Angeles, California, aged 50, and was interred in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.

A la Cour d'assises de Conakry, on est désormais dans le tout dernier virage du procès des présumés auteurs de la tentative d'assassinat du président Alpha Condé le 19 juillet 2011. Les plaidoiries des avocats de la partie civile ont effet débuté le lundi 27 mai et se sont poursuivies ce mardi. Jusqu'à président, c'est la prestation de Me Mory Doumbouya qui a retenu l'attention.
En effet, c'est cet avocat du plaignant qui est le chef de l'Etat qui se sera montré le plus précis dans les charges contre les accusés en les catégorisant selon différents chefs d'accusation et les peines y afférentes. Après avoir essayé de combattre la thèse du complot imaginaire que les avocats de la défense et des proches des mis en cause ont essayé de mettre en avant depuis le début de cette affaire.
Suffisamment exhaustif dans sa prestation, Me Doumbouya n'a pas occulté les accusés en fuite. A leur encontre, estimant que la fuite en soi était une « présomption de (leur) culpabilité », il a souhaité que la Cour applique la procédure de contumace, conformément aux dispositions de la loi.
En ce qui concerne ceux qui attendent leur sort à l'issue de ce procès, tout le monde n'est pas logé à la même enseigne par Me Doumbouya. Ce en raison de la différence des charges qui pèsent sur les uns et les autres. Ainsi, selon lui, il y a les acteurs de premier plan qui seraient essentiellement, le commandant Alpha Oumar Boffa Diallo et Jean Guilavogui. Les faits reprochés à ces deux seraient passibles normalement d'une réclusion à perpétuité. Mais agrravés qu'ils sont par l'usage de l'arme, ces faits seraient finalement punissables par une peine capitale. Aux termes, précise Me Doumbouya de l'article 91 du Code pénal. L'avocat s'est particulièrement appesanti sur le cas du commandant AOB pour mettre un accent sur la dangerosité de ce dernier et la gravité des desseins qu'il aurait eus.
Ensuite, Me Mory Doumbouya s'est attaqué à la catégorie des complices. Utilisant le vocabulaire de l'apiculture en général et celui de la ruche d'abeille en particulier, il a ainsi déterminé la responsabilité des uns et des autres. Selon lui, Mme Fatou Badiar serait la reine ; Almamy Aguibou Diallo, Mamadou Alpha Diallo, Margis-chef Youssouf Diallo et Alpha Alimou Barry, les ouvrières et le sous-lieutenant Mohamed Komara (Rambo), le faux-bourdon. A leur encontre, l'avocat a émis le souhait que les dispositions de l'article 150 du Code pénal puissent s'appliquer.
Par contre, selon Me Doumbouya, il y a une seconde catégorie de complices dont la responsabilité « est si moindre qu'il n'y a pas lieu de les retenir davantage ». Ce sont, selon lui, le capitaine Abdoulaye Diallo, Mohamed Sow, Amadou Sadio Diallo et lieutenant Mamadou Yéro Diallo. Cette relative n'est cependant pas réservée au capitaine Mamadou Adama Mara qui serait, à en croire Me Doumbouya « le directeur des sanctuaires des assaillants ».
Un autre groupe auquel Me Doumbouya ne semble pas réservé le meilleur des sorts, c'est bien celui composé de Baba Alimou Barry, Thierno Sadou Diallo, Ousmane Diallo, Mamadou Lamine Barry et Thierno Maka Bah. Egalement rangés dans la catégorie des complices, l'avocat estime qu'ils seraient coupables de vente et de commerce illicite d'armes. Mais il se garde bien de proposer une quelconque sanction, estimant qu'il laissait aux juges d'apprécier eux-mêmes. Pour Souleymane Bah, il sollicite que la Cour se montre clémente.
Pour les lieutenants Mamadou Lamarana Diallo et Ibrahima Sory Diallo, Mamadou Alimou Barry, Alpha Saliou Wann, et le capitaine Chérif Baldé, poursuivis pour absence délictueuse l'avocat de la partie civile propose une fourchette de 5 à 10 ans. Cependant, il se montre une nouvelle fois clément avec les colonels Lanciné Doumbouya et Boubacar Algassimou Barry, le sous-lieutenant Mamadou Sadjaliou Baldé et le colonel Sambariou Diamankan, en préconisant leur relaxe. Pour ce qui est du commandant Aboubacar Sidiki Camara alias De Gaulle, poursuivi pour consommation de Chanvre indien, l'avocat demande que l'on applique les dispositions de l'article 377 du Code pénal. Enfin, à propos d'El hadj Boubacar Diallo, en dépit de son âge avancé, Me Doumbouya souhaite qu'on lui fasse subir les rigueurs de l'article 361 du Code de procédure pénal pour le chef d'accusation de rébellion.
Il est à rappeler que ces plaidoiries qui avaient commencé avec Me Georges Déstéphane Sidibé se sont poursuivies ce mardi avec Me Maurice Kamano.

Après avoir essayé de combattre la thèse du complot imaginaire que les avocats de la défense et des proches des mis en cause ont essayé de mettre en avant depuis le début de cette affaire.
Suffisamment exhaustif dans sa prestation, Me Doumbouya n'a pas occulté les accusés en fuite. A leur encontre, estimant que la fuite en soi était une « présomption de (leur) culpabilité », il a souhaité que la Cour applique la procédure de contumace, conformément aux dispositions de la loi.
En ce qui concerne ceux qui attendent leur sort à l'issue de ce procès, tout le monde n'est pas logé à la même enseigne par Me Doumbouya. Ce en raison de la différence des charges qui pèsent sur les uns et les autres. Ainsi, selon lui, il y a les acteurs de premier plan qui seraient essentiellement, le commandant Alpha Oumar Boffa Diallo et Jean Guilavogui. Les faits reprochés à ces deux seraient passibles normalement d'une réclusion à perpétuité. Mais agrravés qu'ils sont par l'usage de l'arme, ces faits seraient finalement punissables par une peine capitale. Aux termes, précise Me Doumbouya de l'article 91 du Code pénal. L'avocat s'est particulièrement appesanti sur le cas du commandant AOB pour mettre un accent sur la dangerosité de ce dernier et la gravité des desseins qu'il aurait eus.
Ensuite, Me Mory Doumbouya s'est attaqué à la catégorie des complices. Utilisant le vocabulaire de l'apiculture en général et celui de la ruche d'abeille en particulier, il a ainsi déterminé la responsabilité des uns et des autres. Selon lui, Mme Fatou Badiar serait la reine ; Almamy Aguibou Diallo, Mamadou Alpha Diallo, Margis-chef Youssouf Diallo et Alpha Alimou Barry, les ouvrières et le sous-lieutenant Mohamed Komara (Rambo), le faux-bourdon. A leur encontre, l'avocat a émis le souhait que les dispositions de l'article 150 du Code pénal puissent s'appliquer.
Par contre, selon Me Doumbouya, il y a une seconde catégorie de complices dont la responsabilité « est si moindre qu'il n'y a pas lieu de les retenir davantage ». Ce sont, selon lui, le capitaine Abdoulaye Diallo, Mohamed Sow, Amadou Sadio Diallo et lieutenant Mamadou Yéro Diallo. Cette relative n'est cependant pas réservée au capitaine Mamadou Adama Mara qui serait, à en croire Me Doumbouya « le directeur des sanctuaires des assaillants ».
Un autre groupe auquel Me Doumbouya ne semble pas réservé le meilleur des sorts, c'est bien celui composé de Baba Alimou Barry, Thierno Sadou Diallo, Ousmane Diallo, Mamadou Lamine Barry et Thierno Maka Bah. Egalement rangés dans la catégorie des complices, l'avocat estime qu'ils seraient coupables de vente et de commerce illicite d'armes. Mais il se garde bien de proposer une quelconque sanction, estimant qu'il laissait aux juges d'apprécier eux-mêmes. Pour Souleymane Bah, il sollicite que la Cour se montre clémente.
Pour les lieutenants Mamadou Lamarana Diallo et Ibrahima Sory Diallo, Mamadou Alimou Barry, Alpha Saliou Wann, et le capitaine Chérif Baldé, poursuivis pour absence délictueuse l'avocat de la partie civile propose une fourchette de 5 à 10 ans. Cependant, il se montre une nouvelle fois clément avec les colonels Lanciné Doumbouya et Boubacar Algassimou Barry, le sous-lieutenant Mamadou Sadjaliou Baldé et le colonel Sambariou Diamankan, en préconisant leur relaxe. Pour ce qui est du commandant Aboubacar Sidiki Camara alias De Gaulle, poursuivi pour consommation de Chanvre indien, l'avocat demande que l'on applique les dispositions de l'article 377 du Code pénal. Enfin, à propos d'El hadj Boubacar Diallo, en dépit de son âge avancé, Me Doumbouya souhaite qu'on lui fasse subir les rigueurs de l'article 361 du Code de procédure pénal pour le chef d'accusation de rébellion.
Il est à rappeler que ces plaidoiries qui avaient commencé avec Me Georges Déstéphane Sidibé se sont poursuivies ce mardi avec Me Maurice Kamano.
