distinguish|broadcast programming}}
A television program is a segment of content intended for broadcast on vision, other than a commercial, trailer, or any other segment of content not serving as attraction for viewership. It may be a single production, or more commonly, a series of related productions (also called a television series).
A television series that is intended to comprise a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries or serial. Series without a fixed length are usually divided into seasons or series, yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. While there is no defined length, US industry practice tends to favor longer seasons than those of some other countries.
A one-time broadcast may be called a "special," or particularly in the UK a "special episode." A television film ("made-for-TV movie" or "television movie"), is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video.
A program can be either recorded, as on video tape, other various electronic media forms, played with an on-demand player or viewed on live television.
The CW Television Network (most commonly referred to as The CW) is an American broadcast television network that is operated by The CW Network, LLC, a limited liability joint venture between CBS Corporation, the former owners of the United Paramount Network (UPN), and the Warner Bros. Entertainment division of Time Warner, former majority owner of The WB Television Network. The "CW" name is an initialism derived from the first letters of the names of its two parent corporations (CBS and Warner Bros.).
The network made its debut on September 18, 2006, after its two predecessors, UPN and The WB, respectively ceased independent operations on September 15 and September 17 of that year. The CW's first two nights of programming – on September 18 and 19, 2006 – consisted of reruns and launch-related specials. The CW marked its formal launch date on September 20, 2006, with the two-hour premiere of the seventh cycle of America's Next Top Model. The network's programming lineup is intended to appeal mainly to young adults between the ages of 18 and 34. The network currently runs programming six days a week: airing Monday through Fridays in the afternoon and in prime time, along with a Saturday morning live-action educational programming block produced by Litton Entertainment called One Magnificent Morning.

That Girl is an American sitcom that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. It starred Marlo Thomas as the title character Ann Marie, an aspiring (but only sporadically employed) actress, who moves from her hometown of Brewster, New York to try to make it big in New York City. Ann has to take a number of offbeat "temp" jobs to support herself in between her various auditions and bit parts. Ted Bessell played her boyfriend Donald Hollinger, a writer for Newsview Magazine; Lew Parker and Rosemary DeCamp played Lew Marie and Helen Marie, her concerned parents. Bernie Kopell, Ruth Buzzi and Reva Rose played Ann and Donald's friends. That Girl was developed by writers Bill Persky and Sam Denoff, who had served as head writers on The Dick Van Dyke Show (with which Thomas's father, Danny Thomas, was closely associated) earlier in the 1960s.
Each episode begins with a pre-credits teaser in which an odd incident occurs or a discussion foreshadows the episode's story. The scene almost always ends with someone exclaiming "...that girl!", just as Ann wanders into the shot or the character notices her. The words "That Girl" would appear over the freeze-frame shot of Ann. The opening credits during the first season featured Thomas, in character, strolling the streets of New York. From the second season forward, the opening shot was the view from a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train crossing the New Jersey Meadowlands between Newark and Penn Station near Laurel Hill Park, then Thomas flying a kite in Central Park, and seeing (and exchanging winks with) her double in a store window. Lyrics were added to the theme for the final season, written by series co-creator Sam Denoff, sung by Ron Hicklin.

Oscar winner Shirley Booth was one of the most beloved television stars of the first half of the 1960s with her television series 'Hazel', which ran on NBC for four seasons from 1961 to 1965, and then a final fifth season on CBS in the 1965-1966 season. By the time Hazel came into her life, she was already a star in feature films, having won an Academy Oscar Award for her role in the movie 'Come Back, Little Sheba' in 1952; she had already won a Tony by that time for her role in the stage version of Sheba. The role of Hazel won Shirley Booth two television Emmy awards and commensurate with her star status and appeal, she owned a twenty-five percent share in the series. Born Thelma Booth Ford August 28, 1898, Booth returned to television in 1973 in the short lived series 'A Touch of Gra...
Lost in Space - season 3! In our conclusion of our weeklong fond look back at the series, there indeed were quite a few changes in this final season. A new look, new style, new storyline focus, new title sequence, new theme song. Indeed, Irwin Allen was trying to get the series back to its roots with more focus on the Robinson family, and space travel. Special mention must be given (as noted in this clip from the 1998 Television Special 'Lost In Space Forever'/Narrated by John Laroquette) to: * New theme song creator (the original theme song was very good as well) John Williams. * The special effects (the cool Space Pod!!) talent that was working with Irwin Allen on Lost In Space - in particular L.B. Abbott * Costume designer (awesome space uniforms!) Paul Zastupnevich. * Th...
As we wrap up our week long look back at the military and law & order series of the 1965-1966 season (Man/Girl from U.N.C.L.E. series and I Spy will be highlighted later this fall!... both series are in our Summer/Fall 2013 archives as well!), we look back today at F Troop, in living color for season 2! The series premiered on September 14, 1965, filmed and shown in black and white that first season. This short clip is from the opening episode of season 2 (very first in color!), with new opening title sequence artwork. The first broadcast for season 2 was on September 8, 1966. Final episode of that season, and for the series, was April 6, 1967. This season 2 premiere episode is entitled 'The Singing Mountie', and guest starred everyone's favorite (along with Don Rickles) mid 1960's co...
Fifty years ago today, April 21, 1966, the final episode of Gidget aired on ABC television. Debuting on September 15, 1965, Gidget would run for just one season, but would go on to legendary status, primarily on the high energy, success and talent of the show's young star, Sally Field. This video clip contains a fine interview with Ms. Field, and is a part of the extras on the Gidget DVD package, which comes highly recommended. The show can also be seen on cable TV each Sunday morning on Antenna TV (check local listing for time zone specifics). Check your Amazon or B&N; source for DVD ordering information. The show is very much a charming slice of mid 1960s teenage nostalgia, and unlike the movie versions of Gidget, this TV version focused much more on the father-daughter relationship, a...

Civility has no place at the end of the world and there’s no telling what lengths our heroes can and will go to in order to survive. The 100 stars Eliza Taylor as Cla...
Marlo. Diamonds, Daisies, Snowflakes, That Girl. Fifty years ago tomorrow night (September 8, 1966), one of the all-time classics, starring and produced by one of the industry's brightest young talents - Marlo Thomas, took to the airwaves. And the rest is history. In this interview with Ms. Thomas, from the DVD release of 'That Girl', Marlo describes the very beginnings of the creation of the show. We want to take a moment right here to tell one and all how highly we recommend the That Girl DVD set (Shout Factory - 2006 Daisy Production)... it is outstanding. Available on Amazon. This clip is from a far larger, longer interview with Ms. Thomas on the DVD, and it is outstanding - Marlo is everything in this interview: funny, self effacing, lovely, witty, intelligent and charming...
Our final group of television shows that we'll look at for our review of the great 1965-1966 television season will be the variety programs. There were many variations including: * The Ed Sullivan Show and The Hollywood Palace * The Red Skelton Hour, The Andy Williams Show, Perry Como Kraft Music Hall, The Dean Martin Show * The King Family Show, The Lawrence Welk Show * Jackie Gleason and his American Scene Magazine and finally two pop music shows that had a variety flair to them: Hullabaloo and Shindig! We'll look at Hullabaloo and Shindig today, and the Dean Martin Show tomorrow, with a glimpse of the Ed Sullivan Show (and many others) on Sunday to wrap up our spring look at the 50th anniversary of the 1965-66 season. Hullabaloo, on NBC, featured pop and rock music recording acts...
The 2015-2016 broadcast television season is the 50th anniversary of the debut of a good many fine television series including: ABC: Batman, Gidget, F Troop, The Big Valley and The F.B.I. NBC: Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie, The Dean Martin Show, I Spy, Run For Your Life and Please Don't Eat the Daisies. CBS: Lost In Space, Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes and The Wild Wild West. Many of these series are featured here at Television Vanguard, with more to come later in 2016 and into 2017. The mid-1960s (1963-1967) produced a tidal wave of outstanding series that would enjoy decades long success in the syndication rerun market worldwide. The Wild Wild West debuted on CBS on September 17, 1965 with the pilot episode entitled "The Night of the Inferno." Guest starring in the pilot were cha...
The Western on television had been a staple on the networks' primetime schedule from the mid/late 1950s to the early 1960s. By the 1965-66 season however, many had rode off into the sunset, never to see the transition to color television. But two westerns not only survived the technical and cultural transformations taking place in the mid to late 1960s, these two shows thrived. Today, we look at the first of the two impact Westerns of the 1965-66 season: Bonanza. Bonanza had a tremendous broadcast television series run - from September 12, 1959, to January 16, 1973... a total of 14 seasons. It was a constant Sunday night ratings powerhouse for NBC during much of the 1960s. The main cast consisted of four key members of the Cartwright family - father Ben (Lorne Greene), son Joe (Mi...
'The Spy Business', one of the later episodes [third season] from the hit series 'I Spy', this episode was first broadcast on NBC April 1, 1968. This clip includes the famous I Spy theme song and opening segment graphics, one of the best of all time, perhaps the best of all time [alongside the MTM Show theme, Hawaii Five-0 theme, The Mission Impossible theme and Route 66 theme (the great Nelson Riddle)] for a television series. Kelly Robinson (Robert Culp) and Alexander Scott (Bill Cosby) are international espionage agents masquerading as a globe trekking tennis player and his trainer. Culp and Cosby helped define the term 'television cool' during the height of super-spy mania on television. This clip is from the I Spy series DVD collection, a Three F Productions, distributed by Image...
