Aleppo (/əˈlɛpoʊ/; Arabic: ﺣﻠﺐ / ALA-LC: Ḥalab, IPA: [ˈħalab]) is the largest city in Syria and it serves as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,132,100 (2004 census), it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant. For centuries, Aleppo was the Syrian region's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third-largest, after Constantinople and Cairo.
Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC; and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency. Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia (i.e. modern Iraq).

This is one of the few footage in the last 3 years taken from inside the Citadel of Aleppo. It shows some of the fortress’s destruction and damage that was caused by the terrorist groups operating in the area. It also shows how members of the Syrian Army, many of whom are from Aleppo, are defending the citadel and its neighboring districts since they have been stationed there. Source: Syrian State TV

"The Citadel of Aleppo (Arabic: قلعة حلب) is a large medieval fortified palace in the centre of the old city of Aleppo, northern Syria. It is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. Subsequently occupied by many civilizations including the Greeks, Byzantines, Ayyubids and Mamluks, the majority of the construction as it stands today is thought to originate from the Ayyubid period. A great deal of conservation work has taken place in the 2000s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation. The citadel of Aleppo is distinct for being the world’s only ancient fortress that is back in action today as it got engaged in the war in Syria and was used as a garrison by the Syrian army against the militant groups who are attempting to seize it. Syrian people in general and Aleppines in particular are proud of this landmark which witnessed many successive invaders and survived them all. This large medieval fortified palace in the center of the old city of Aleppo, northern Syria, is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. It was occupied by many civilizations including the Greeks, Byzantines, Ottomans and French, however, it was revived and this is what Syrians believe today; it will stand still. There has been a major development in central Aleppo as Syria's army has regained control of a rebel-held district after days of heavy air strikes. Pro-government troops seized the Farafira district, northwest of Aleppo's historic citadel, in a ground advance on Tuesday. The Syrian military, helped by Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias and the Russian air force, launched a campaign to retake Aleppo last week. Syrian Army has retaken Aleppo's Central District
Syrian government forces take control of a district in the militant-held city of Aleppo. A military source says the army has captured the Farafira district northwest of the Aleppo citadel. Army units are now demining the area. The breakthrough is part of a major offensive launched against the terrorists last week. The operation began after Damascus said the peace accord brokered by the United States and Russia had repeatedly been violated by militant groups. What's really going on in Aleppo? Are Assad and Putin exterminating the population for sport? Is it a war against US-backed "moderates"? That is what the mainstream media would have us believe. We speak with Vanessa Beeley, a journalist who just returned from Aleppo for the real story.
THIS IS A DOUBLE SIEGE, THATS WHY IT TOOK OVER AN HOUR, AND HAD THE GATE OF THE THIRD WALL OF THE CITADEL, NOT BEEN OPENED, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A TRIPPLE SIEGE. The Siege and sack of Beroea or Berroia (Aleppo) by the Roman-Byzantines under the Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, took place in 963 A.D. During one of his successful Syrian campaigns. According to the history of Leo the Deacon, Nikephoros Phokas has been winning victories and retaking fortresses from the Arabs even before he was Emperor. He had already destroyed the Saracen Emirate of Crete and was sent to Syria were due to his successes and conquests he was entrusted the command of the whole Roman army. Once he became Emperor, he drilled the army constantly, spent a lot of money on his army, necessary weapons and siege machines and...
MANY links in the video description: Click SHOW MORE: The corporate media is doing it AGAIN. Not long ago, they asked how they got Iraq so wrong (answer, they were mega-phones for war profiteers and totally abdicated their responsibility as journalists) and now they are recklessly spewing the exact same type of of inflammatory distortions and spin with Russia, Syria, Iran. The use of the Aleppo Syrian child photo is a horrific example of the corporate media utilizing emotional manipulation to drive support of US military interventionism which will CREATE more of the same. It should outrage every American tired of the US War for Profit as a business model. This video originally appeared on facebook but due to popular demand I am also posting it in my youtube library.
