Japan earthquake and Tsunami 2011 - Shocking video
An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly-formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists say.
The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.
The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

This video covers the potential for seismic activity over the next 7 days globally. West Pacific, East Pacific, Asia, Middle East, and Europe should all see expected movement this coming week based upon the current activity taking place below the Pacific plate (in the Asthenosphere).
The pressure is building from below the plate, causing shallower larger earthquakes to spread out from the West Pacific across Asia + the Middle East (to the West) and across the United States / Central America to the East.
New upper M4.0 to lower M5.0 earthquake activity is expected along the West coast of the United States, and interior craton movement is expected from Nevada to Arizona, then to Texas, Oklahoma.. finally up the East coast in New England.
We should see M4.0 - M5.0 off the West coast, then followed by M4.0 in the Midwest, followed by M3.0 to M4.0 on the East coast... we could also see swarms develop at the dormant volcanoes across the California / Nevada border once again.
Europe, Asia, Central + South America.. you MUST pay attention to the West Pacific over the next few days to understand what is coming your way. We will all see movement this week based upon the several deep earthquakes which occurred over the past few days.
I'm expecting Central and South America, Asia, and Europe to see activity after the West Pacific is struck... BUT... this doesn't mean I won't be wrong! Hope for less, but plan for more in case things change.
If we see new deep earthquakes or a new large earthquake in a different location than expected, then I will do an update with a new forecast based upon these events.

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time. Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common scale on which earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter scale. These two scales are numerically similar over their range of validity. Magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes are mostly almost imperceptible and magnitude 7 and over potentially cause serious damage over large areas, depending on their depth. The largest earthquakes in historic times have been of magnitude slightly over 9, although there is no limit to the possible magnitude. The most recent large earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or larger was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan in 2011 (as of March 2011), and it was the largest Japanese earthquake since records began. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale. The shallower an earthquake, the more damage to structures it causes, all else being equal.

Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu (born 7 November 1988), better known by his stage name Tinie Tempah, is an English rapper. He made his first mixtape in 2007; his first album, Disc-Overy, debuted at number one in October 2010 and was preceded by two number-one singles.
Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu, was born in London, England on 7 November 1988, and is of Ibusa, Delta State, Nigerian origin. He lived on the Aylesbury Estate in South East London until he was 12 with his parents and three younger siblings. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Abbey Wood, London SE2, (now known as St. Paul's Academy). He went on to study A Levels at St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College, SW12. Of his London upbringing, Tempah states: “London is one of the only places in the world where you can live in a council block and see a beautiful semi-detached house across the street. Growing up around that was inspirational, it kept me motivated".
In 2006, Tempah gained a great deal of airplay on British music TV channel, Channel AKA, for his song "Tears" He made his first mixtape in 2007 with 28 songs, freestyles and remixes, featuring Mz Bratt, Chipmunk and G-Unit.[citation needed] His first album, Disc-Overy, debuted at number one in October 2010 and was preceded by the number-one singles "Pass Out" and "Written in the Stars" and the UK Top 5 hits "Frisky" and "Miami 2 Ibiza". An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly-formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists say.
The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.
The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.
The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

This video covers the potential for seismic activity over the next 7 days globally. West Pacific, East Pacific, Asia, Middle East, and Europe should all see expected movement this coming week based upon the current activity taking place below the Pacific plate (in the Asthenosphere).
The pressure is building from below the plate, causing shallower larger earthquakes to spread out from the West Pacific across Asia + the Middle East (to the West) and across the United States / Central America to the East.
New upper M4.0 to lower M5.0 earthquake activity is expected along the West coast of the United States, and interior craton movement is expected from Nevada to Arizona, then to Texas, Oklahoma.. finally up the East coast in New England.
We should see M4.0 - M5.0 off the West coast, then followed by M4.0 in the Midwest, followed by M3.0 to M4.0 on the East coast... we could also see swarms develop at the dormant volcanoes across the California / Nevada border once again.
Europe, Asia, Central + South America.. you MUST pay attention to the West Pacific over the next few days to understand what is coming your way. We will all see movement this week based upon the several deep earthquakes which occurred over the past few days.
I'm expecting Central and South America, Asia, and Europe to see activity after the West Pacific is struck... BUT... this doesn't mean I won't be wrong! Hope for less, but plan for more in case things change.
If we see new deep earthquakes or a new large earthquake in a different location than expected, then I will do an update with a new forecast based upon these events.

Europe is now reset for another round of movement to the South in the upper M4.0 to M5.0 range.
North India to West China is set for new large movement, as well as Japan, and Papua New Guinea.
Larger movement should strike Central America in the M6.0 range near Panama / El Salvador .. South America needs to watch the coast of Chile for additional larger activity to strike. Could be larger than M6.5

The great plates are rough and stick together, building up energy that is released as earthquakes. East of Japan, the Pacific plate dives beneath the overriding Eurasian plate. The temblor completely released centuries of built up stress between the two tectonic plates, a recent study found.

Several of the swarms measuring in the M4.0+ range, but the USGS has not reported the events on any of their feeds for some reason. Taiwan, South Japan, Ecuador just to name a few locations where swarms are occurring, but no earthquakes are being reported by the USGS.
Europe showing the stress as well. Now needing to watch Europe for noteworthy movement this week in the M4.0+ range, across the region spanning from the English Channel to Poland and from Switzerland to Serbia (based on the new deep earthquake below Serbia).
United States should see interior plate movement and coastal movement this week across California. Specifically the border of Nevada + California , as well as Southern California near Los Angeles. Keep watch for M5.0+ earthquakes to strike this week. Hope for swarms of lesser events, but plan for a single event in the M5.0+ range. If things get larger, it will be preceded by movement at the interior volcanoes spanning California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington State.
The North American craton across the United States needs to keep serious watch in the midwest for possible larger movement as well. Specifically the Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma fracking operations. M4.0+ are on the schedule for this week, no way around it in light of the cluster of Earthquakes already showing in the Northwest from Yellowstone to San Francisco ( a sign of pressure pushing from the NW to the SE.. the line of earthquakes denoting where the pressure is coming from and going to.
The East coast of the USA also needs to be on watch for new earthquake activity to strike near Virginia, as well as new activity to strike further Northeast near the US / Canada border with New York and Quebec. M3.0+ could be possible.
If we see larger movement on the West coast , it will cause larger movement in the midwest, which will then cause larger movement on the East coast. The current magnitudes forecast are based upon a M5.0 range earthquake striking California or the Coast of California / Oregon.
