Nuclear weapon bomb works by initiating a nuclear chain reaction, which releases a huge amount of energy relative to conventional explosives. Per unit volume, an atom bomb may be millions or billions of times more powerful than TNT. The first atomic explosion occurred on 16 July 1945 at the Alamogordo Test Range in New Mexico, during a test called Trinity. It was developed during the top secret Manhattan Project, which was directed by General Leslie R. Groves of the US Army.
More than likely, you're aware of some nuclear weapon facts. You probably know about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You might even know that nuclear weapons have gotten significantly more advanced since then. There have been failed tests, space tests, explosions in the arctic, and explosions in the ocean. However, the bombs that are created today are completely more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And although those were the only two nuclear warheads ever dropped during war time, there is plenty of reason to worry about the future of any potential atomic conflicts. Nuclear warheads are dangerous for numerous reasons. Not only do they create an insanely large blast but they emit radiation that damages the environment and can even change the climate. Were there to be a nuclear war today, life as we know it would most likely come to an end. As Albert Einstein once said "I do not know with what sort of weapons World War 3 will be fought, but I know that World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones". And that is what is at stake. These weapons are capable of changing everything and many times we have come closer to nuclear war than you might hope to think. Since the end of World War II, when the United States dropped the A-bomb on Hiroshima, Japan; and the advent of the Cold War
between the world’s greatest powers, the USA and USSR, the threat of nuclear destruction has never seemed far away.
In the forty years the Cold War raged, both sides compiled massive arsenals of weapons, including atom bombs and guided missiles, as well as the methodology to deliver them. Although in recent times attempts have been made to slow or even stop nuclear proliferation, countries such as North Korea, China and Pakistan have continued to develop and test their own missiles. As a result, there are still enough weapons out there to render our planet uninhabitable. A frightening thought, indeed!

Less than a month later, two bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bringing about the end of the Second World War. No nuclear bombs have been used as weapons since the attacks on Japan, but thousands of tests have been conducted – primarily by the US and USSR throughout the Cold War.

A neutron bomb or officially known as one type of Enhanced Radiation Weapon is a low yield fission-fusion thermonuclear weapon (hydrogen bomb) in which the burst of neutrons generated by a fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon, rather than being absorbed by its other components. The weapon's radiation case, usually made from relatively thick uranium, lead or steel in a standard bomb, are instead made of as thin a material as possible to facilitate the greatest escape of fusion produced neutrons. The "usual" nuclear weapon yield—expressed as kilotons of TNT equivalent—is not a measure of a neutron weapon's destructive power. It refers only to the energy released (mostly heat and blast), and does not express the lethal effect of neutron radiation on living organisms.
Compared to a pure fission bomb with an identical explosive yield, a neutron bomb would emit about ten times the amount of neutron radiation. In a fission bomb at sea level, the total radiation pulse energy which is composed of both gamma rays and neutrons is approximately 5% of the entire energy released; in the neutron bomb it would be closer to 40%. Furthermore, the neutrons emitted by a neutron bomb have a much higher average energy level (close to 14 MeV) than those released during a fission reaction (1–2 MeV). Technically speaking, all low yield nuclear weapons are radiation weapons, that is including the non-enhanced variant. Up to about 10 kilotons in yield, all nuclear weapons have prompt neutron radiation as their most far reaching lethal component, after which point the lethal blast and thermal effects radius begins to out-range the lethal ionizing radiation radius. A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission (fission bomb) or a combination of fission and fusion (thermonuclear weapon). Both reactions release vast quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter. The first fission ("atomic") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 20,000 tons of TNT (see Trinity (nuclear test)). The first thermonuclear ("hydrogen") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 10,000,000 tons of TNT.
A thermonuclear weapon weighing little more than 2,400 pounds (1,100 kg) can produce an explosive force comparable to the detonation of more than 1.2 million tons (1.1 million tonnes) of TNT. A nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire, and radiation. Nuclear weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction, and their use and control have been a major focus of international relations policy since their debut.

On July 16th, 1945, the United States conducted the world's first test of a nuclear weapon. Less than a month later, two bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bringing about the end of the Second World War. No nuclear bombs have been used as weapons since the attacks on Japan, but thousands of tests have been conducted – primarily by the US and USSR throughout the Cold War.

A neutron bomb or officially known as one type of Enhanced Radiation Weapon is a low yield fission-fusion thermonuclear weapon (hydrogen bomb) in which the burst of neutrons generated by a fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon, rather than being absorbed by its other components. The weapon's radiation case, usually made from relatively thick uranium, lead or steel in a standard bomb, are instead made of as thin a material as possible to facilitate the greatest escape of fusion produced neutrons. The "usual" nuclear weapon yield—expressed as kilotons of TNT equivalent—is not a measure of a neutron weapon's destructive power. Compared to a pure fission bomb with an identical explosive yield, a neutron bomb would emit about ten times the amount of neutron radiation. In a fission bomb at sea level, the total radiation pulse energy which is composed of both gamma rays and neutrons is approximately 5% of the entire energy released; in the neutron bomb it would be closer to 40%. Furthermore, the neutrons emitted by a neutron bomb have a much higher average energy level (close to 14 MeV) than those released during a fission reaction (1–2 MeV). Technically speaking, all low yield nuclear weapons are radiation weapons, that is including the non-enhanced variant. Up to about 10 kilotons in yield, all nuclear weapons have prompt neutron radiation as their most far reaching lethal component, after which point the lethal blast and thermal effects radius begins to out-range the lethal ionizing radiation radius. The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) sponsored this seminar entitled "The Case for U.S. Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century" on May 19, 2016, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The seminar was presented by Brad Roberts, director of the Center for Global Security Research.
Abstract:
CGSR director Brad Roberts is the author of a new book by Stanford University Press, entitled The Case for U.S. Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century. The book was written in the year prior to his appointment at CGSR and was released a few weeks ago. In the interim, it has been reviewed in publications such as Foreign Affairs and Survival. This seminar will review the main arguments in the book and the reactions in the political, military, and academic communities. The book is a counter to the conventional wisdom that the United States can and should do more to reduce both the role of nuclear weapons in its security strategies and the number of weapons in its arsenal. Drawing on the author’s experience in the making and implementation of U.S. policy in the Obama administration, the book examines that real world experience and finds important lessons for the disarmament enterprise. That experience also provides insights into the new problems of strategic conflict in the 21st century for which nuclear weapons remain relevant but which are also driving major changes in strategies for deterrence, assurance, and strategic stability.
Brad Roberts is the director of the Center for Global Security Research. From 2009 to 2013, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy. In this capacity, Dr. Roberts played a leading role in the Obama administration’s Nuclear Posture Review and its implementation. Prior to joining the Pentagon, he was a policy analyst at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Alexandria, Virginia, and an adjunct professor at George Washington University.

B61 US Nuclear Bomb Program
The B61 nuclear bomb is one of the primary thermonuclear weapons in the U.S. Enduring Stockpile following the end of the Cold War. It is an intermediate yield strategic and tactical nuclear weapon featuring a two-stage radiation implosion design. The B61 is a variable yield bomb (0.3 to 340 kiloton yield in various versions and settings) designed for carriage by high-speed aircraft. It has a streamlined casing capable of withstanding supersonic flight speeds. The weapon is 11 ft 8 in (3.58 m) long, with a diameter of about 13 in (33 cm). Basic weight is about 700 lb (320 kg), although the weights of individual weapons may vary depending on version and fuze/retardation configuration.

The Manhattan Task began modestly in 1939, but expanded to employ greater than 130,000 individuals as well as cost almost US$ 2 billion (about $26 billion in 2015 [1] bucks). Over 90 % of the price was for developing manufacturing facilities and generating the fissile materials, with less than 10 % for growth and also manufacturing of the tools. The Manhattan Project was a research and development job that made the very first nuclear weapons throughout The second world war.
