Here are some tips from Mary DeWalt:
This great room is a two-story great room with lots of volume. It is very dramatic! Very exciting!
Sometimes two-story volume rooms can really be a challenge to decorate. One of the things that can turn a room from ordinary to extraordinary is the right artwork and accessories.
Let's start with the volume spaces on artwork. Here what we did is we took two mirrors, a piece of art, two more mirrors, and another piece of art to break it up. The mirrors are from
Home Decorators. You can go online, and they are $99 a piece which is not that expensive. Then, on the other side of the room, you can do something as simple as taking a room dividing screen and take it apart and spread it out on the wall, but don't spread it out too far. You want to keep a close distance between multiple pieces so it is not looking like you are trying to fill the wall.
The other issue is always window coverings. Here you can see we went all the way to the ceiling with the window coverings. A very simple treatment with art in between, and again, it draws attention to the volume in the room.
This room is an example of the latest and greatest trends in color!
It's yellow, gray, and white. This is a color scheme that you see in "
The Restoration Hardware Catalogs" and the "
West Elm Catalogs". We always kind of go to those catalogs in model homes because that is what people are seeing and that is what they like. The furniture is another good example of a very transitional style.
Clean lines in the sofa! Clean lines in all the tables! Uncluttered, but comfortable!
People are always asking about area rugs. You can combine prints as long as you do it thoughtfully. These chairs and the pillows on the sofa have a geometric pattern (a diamond pattern), but you can see this darling area rug has a more organic pattern so they do not fight each other.
Again, this pattern in the rug with the bright yellow and gray really helps to bring this room to life.
