Welcome to our presentation on the Curse of William Penn; more commonly known as the Curse of Billy Penn. I'm Dan Shields. And I am Daniel Diazdelcastillo.
Sports are a massive part of popular culture in Philadelphia. This working-class blue-collar town has been lauded time and again for its passionate sports fans. Throughout the 1980s, the four major sports teams in Philadelphia were enjoying success year in and year out. [The flyers win the Stanley cup]
These teams were the Flyers in hockey, Eagles in football, Seventy-Sixers in basketball, and Phillies in baseball. It was seen as a sort of golden age for sports in Philadelphia. With championships in at least one of the sports in the years 1974, 1975, 1980, and 1985, the teams all enjoyed success in both the regular season and in the playoffs. In 1980, all four teams reached their consecutive championship rounds, but the Phillies would be the only eventual winners. [McGraw throwing last pitch]
Eventually, however, the golden age would come to an abrupt halt. [Phillies fan taking hat off] After the opening of One Liberty Place in Philadelphia in March of 1987, the four teams began to experience painful losses in the playoffs. [Picture of One Liberty Place]
Despite appearing in the playoffs in each sport several times, the teams seemed to hit a brick wall since after the opening of the new skyscraper. After One Liberty Place opened, Philadelphia's franchises began a pattern of failures to win a world championship. The Flyers lost the Stanley Cup Finals in 1987 to the Edmonton Oilers. The Phillies lost the 1993 World Series in six games to the Toronto Blue Jays on a walkoff homerun in game 6. The Flyers returned to the Stanley Cup finals in 1997, only to lose to the Detroit Red Wings.
The 76ers lost the 2001 NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games after a heated series including career games from Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kobe Bryant. The Eagles lost three straight NFC Championship games from the 2001 through 2003 seasons.
They reached Super Bowl 39 after the 2004 season, only to lose to the New England Patriots by three points. [Pictures of disheartened Flyers, Phillies, Sixers, and Eagles] Strangely enough, the only years that Philadelphia's franchises reached their league's championship round after One Liberty Place opened were years that presidents were inaugurated, except for the Flyers in 1987, and losses during such years date back to the 76ers loss in 1977.
The reason for the city's fruitless efforts in each sport were soon attributed to the broken gentlemen's agreement that was established when the city was first being settled. The agreement stated that the statue of William Penn, the city's founder, which stood atop City Hall, would be the tallest man-made structure in the city.
When One Liberty Place opened in 1987, it stood 945 feet; a full 397 feet taller than the statue. The opening of One Liberty Place effectively voided and ended the gentlemen's agreement established during the city's inception. In what seemed to further insult the agreement, Two Liberty Place was opened in 1990, soaring at 848 ft.
In 2007, ironworkers from Local Union 401 helped raise the final beam in the construction of the Comcast Center at 17th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard in downtown Philadelphia. Standing 975 ft, the Comcast Center is currently the tallest building in the city. In an attempt to end the curse, the workers attached a small figurine of William Penn to the beam, along with the traditional American flag and small evergreen tree. The following baseball season, the Phillies would win the National League East and advance to the playoffs.
After winning the National League Division Series in 4 four games against the Milwaukee Brewers, The Phillies advanced to the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers. After 5 games, the Phillies took the series 4 to 1. After winning the National League pennant, the Phillies moved on to the 2008 World Series to effectively break the curse.
After 5 well-fought games, the Phillies won the World Series 4-1. In a sigh of relief, the city turned out two million fans to the Phillies' celebration parade. After years of torture and torment, the city celebrated. Famously, Harry Kalas read out the final pitch on the radio.

This is my first film project. If you know nothing of the Curse of William Penn, here is a summary.
The William Penn Statue was first perched atop City Hall building at Broad and Market Street in Center City Philadelphia over a century ago.
In 1984, plans to build Philadelphia's first skyscraper - One Liberty Place - had commenced. The 945 foot glass skyscraper, to be located only three blocks west of City Hall, would exceed Penn's hat by a whopping 397 feet.
Philadelphia sports teams had, up until that point, enjoyed a wealth of success - back to back Stanley Cups for the Flyers in 1974 and 1975, an NBA title for the Sixers in 1983, and the appearance of all four major sports teams in their respective finals in 1980, concluding in a World Series Title for the Phillies. The Golden Age of Sports in the City of Brotherly Love was brought to a halt in 1985, only a few months after discussions to build Liberty One had commenced, when Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers hoisted the Stanley Cup following a win over the Flyers in game five.
Since then, the Eagles, Sixers, Phillies and Flyers, have gone 0 for 7 in Championship finals, accumulating in an 88-season drought - the longest of any city with four professional sports teams. Meanwhile, the City of Brotherly Love now sports seven skyscrapers that rise above the ever mysterious statue of William Penn. Interestingly enough, all of the offending buildings stand to the west of City Hall as the city's founder faces northeast, conceivably giving Penn an unobstructed view of the Delaware River (where he and the Quaker settlers originally landed in the late 1600s). Whether the buildings were constructed keeping Penn's view in mind or not, the fact still remains that Philadelphia pro sports fans have been deprived of a championship for 22 years...and counting.

THE CURSE OF BILLY PENN
[from the CD "Outta' Here!"]
Chicago has the Curse of the Billy Goat. Boston had the Curse of the Bambino. Well Philadelphia had the Curse of Billy Penn. In 1987, construction on One Liberty Place was completed in downtown Philadelphia. The structure became the tallest building in the city surpassing the William Penn statue that sits atop Philadelphia City Hall. From that point on, a hex was placed on the professional sports teams throughout the city. It did not matter if we placed a Flyers jersey or a Phillies hat on top of Billy Penn; now that the statue wasn't the highest point in the city, Philadelphia teams were destined to lose.
The 1987 Flyers lost a heartbreaking Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. The 1993 Phillies lost to Joe Carter and the Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series. The '97 Flyers, '01 Sixers, and '02-05 Eagles all came up short in the end. Even our college basketball teams couldn't get over the hump to reach the Final Four! However, that all changed in the summer of 2008. The Comcast Center opened in downtown Philadelphia and became the tallest building in the city. Upon completion of the final beams on the roof, two construction workers placed a 4-inch plastic statue of William Penn at the top of the building making it the highest point in the city once again. Just like that, the curse was broken. After 25 years of heartbreak and "maybe next year" for Philadelphia, the Phillies won their first championship since 1980 and allowed the city of Brotherly Love to become the city of champions once again.

This song has references to The Curse of Billy Penn, Allen Iverson's famous "Practice" rant, the demolition of Veterans Stadium and the 2008 Phillies World Series team, and a backing beat comprised of Bill Conti's famous "Gonna Fly Now," this rap song is sure to make the average Philly sports fan feel good, or maybe want to fight.
THANK YOU for $7000 on Kickstarter!!

Music Arrangement of "Gonna Fly Now" from the Rocky (1976) Film
Lyrics Written and Performed by Mega Ran
Trumpet Performed by David Cholley

PRODUCED BY MUSTIN™
As anyone who's lived in Philly long enough knows, life as a fan of Philadelphia sports teams is full of ups and downs, and mostly downs. With the 76ers tanking, the Phillies and Flyers going nowhere for a while, and recent key injuries to a few Eagles, despite a great start, this season may shape up to be similar to most.
Philly born former teacher Raheem Jarbo, who records hip-hop under the name Mega Ran, perhaps best known for his "Jeremy Lin Rap" that hit scored viral success plus ESPN, USA Today coverage in 2012, is back with a new track that's less celebratory, but just as heartfelt.
Ran is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to distribute his documentary and new album, information on that is here:

Full rant, with better audio than "Bill Burr Tells Philly The Truth"
When several preceding comedians are booed by a drunk and discourteous audience, Bill Burr abandons his prepared material in order to berate the Philly crowd for over 12 minutes.
Better audio and longer than the original Bill Burr video. My video wasn't great, and it was too much trouble to animate the entire rant with all the Philly references, so I just added some audio visualization effects to the video instead.
