Cave Hill Cemetery is a 296-acre (1.20 km2) Victorian era National Cemetery and arboretum located at 701 Baxter Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Its main entrance is on Baxter Avenue and there is a secondary one on Grinstead Drive. It is the largest cemetery by area and number of burials in Louisville.
Cave Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Cave Hill National Cemetery, containing military graves, is also on the National Register, added in 1998.
Cave Hill was chartered in 1848 on what was William Johnston's Cave Hill Farm, then a rural property some distance east of Louisville. Johnston, who died in 1798, had built the first brick house in Louisville on the grounds circa 1788. City officials had purchased part of the land in the 1830s in anticipation of building a railroad through it, and a workhouse was built there. The railroad was built elsewhere, and the land was leased to local farmers.
In 1846, Mayor Frederick A. Kaye began investigating the possibility of developing a garden-style cemetery on the grounds, a popular concept at the time. Hartford, Connecticut civil engineer Edmund Francis Lee was hired, who planned a cemetery with winding paths, graves across the tops of hills, and lakes and ponds in the valleys. The Cave Hill Cemetery Co. was chartered in February 1848, and the cemetery was dedicated on July 25, 1848. Reverend Doctor Edward Porter Humphrey delivered the dedicatory address and elaborated on the idea of the garden cemetery, noting, among other things, that ". . .Reason and taste suggest that [this cemetery] should be decorated appropriately by the beautiful productions of our great Creator. . ."
Louisville (generally pronounced i/ˈluːəvəl/ or i/ˈlʌvəl/ by natives, and i/ˈluːiːvɪl/ by others) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 30th-most populous city in the United States. It is one of two cities in Kentucky designated as first-class, with the other being the state's second-largest city of Lexington. Louisville is the historical seat and, since 2003, the nominal seat of Jefferson County.
Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and is named after King Louis XVI of France, making Louisville one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. Sited beside the Falls of the Ohio, the only major obstruction to river traffic between the upper Ohio River and the Gulf of Mexico, the settlement first grew as a portage site. It was the founding city of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, which grew into a 6,000-mile (9,700 km) system across 13 states. Today, the city is known as the home of the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Fried Chicken, the University of Louisville and its Louisville Cardinals athletic teams, Louisville Slugger baseball bats, and three of Kentucky's six Fortune 500 companies. Its main airport is also the site of UPS's worldwide air hub.
Muhammad Ali (/ɑːˈliː/; born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.; January 17, 1942) is an American former professional boxer, generally considered among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport. A controversial and polarizing figure during his early career, Ali is now highly regarded for the skills he displayed in the ring plus the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom, racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience. He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC.
Ali began training at 12 years old and at the age of 22 won the world heavyweight championship in 1964 from Sonny Liston in a stunning upset. Shortly after that bout, Ali joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name. He converted to Sunni Islam in 1975.
In 1967, three years after winning the heavyweight title, Ali refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was eventually arrested and found guilty on draft evasion charges and stripped of his boxing title. He did not fight again for nearly four years—losing a time of peak performance in an athlete's career. Ali's appeal worked its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where in 1971 his conviction was overturned. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the war made him an icon for the larger counterculture generation.
A cave or cavern is a hollow place in the ground, especially a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. The word cave can also refer to much smaller openings such as sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos.
Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the cave environment. Visiting or exploring caves for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.
The formation and development of caves is known as speleogenesis. Caves are formed by various geologic processes and can be variable sizes. These may involve a combination of chemical processes, erosion from water, tectonic forces, microorganisms, pressure, and atmospheric influences.
It is estimated that the maximum depth of a cave cannot be more than 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) due to the pressure of overlying rocks. For karst caves the maximum depth is determined on the basis of the lower limit of karst forming processes, coinciding with the base of the soluble carbonate rocks.
A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit (e.g. Box Hill, Surrey).
The distinction between a hill and a mountain is unclear and largely subjective, but a hill is universally considered to be less tall and less steep than a mountain. In the United Kingdom, geographers historically regarded mountains as hills greater than 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, which formed the basis of the plot of the 1995 film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In contrast, hillwalkers have tended to regard mountains as peaks 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level: the Oxford English Dictionary also suggests a limit of 2,000 feet (610 m) and Whittow states "Some authorities regard eminences above 600 m (2,000 ft) as mountains, those below being referred to as hills." The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines hill as an upland with a relative height up to 200 m (660 ft).

Cave Hill Cemetery is located in Louisville, Kentucky. With over 120,000 burials, Cave Hill is one of the United States' largest cemeteries. The beautiful and ornate grave markers along the miles of roadway within the cemetery, speak to the history of Kentucky's cultural elite as well citizens from all walks of life. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cave Hill and I would like to thank the staff and grounds maintenance personnel for their welcoming atmosphere.

Pictures of the monuments around Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky that I took on three different occasions.
Hidden within the trees in the heart of the Highlands, Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky is a nice place to escape for some peace and quiet. While it is a cemetery, and some people find that unsettling, some find it to be a place for silent reflection. Whether you are feeding the ducks or enjoying the fountain, Cave Hill is a nice change of pace in the busy Baxter Avenue area.
Cave Hill Cemetery Louisville KY just a quick video of mausoleums at Cave Hill. If im not mistaken this cemetery is over 300 acres! It is very beautiful and has some amazing stones. I think Col Sanders (KFC) is buried here.

I'm on my way up to the Cave Hill. Here are some of the views over Belfast as I tramp along. Come and walk it yourself. For the able walker it is only half an hour up and half an hour down from the Upper Hightown Road. Far easier and shorter than Divis if you are pushed for time. Cave Hill, sometimes spelt as Cavehill, is a basaltic hill overlooking the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. It forms part of the southeastern border of the Antrim Plateau. It is distinguished by its famous 'Napoleon's Nose', a basaltic outcrop which resembles the profile of the famous emperor Napoleon. Cave Hill spelt as Cavehill is also the name of an electoral ward in Belfast. Historically it was known as Ben Madigan, which is derived from the Irish Beann Mhadagáin, meaning "Madagán’s peak"—so named after a ki...
Found in West Belfast at the junction of the Falls road and the Whiterock road. Opened in 1869 and holding nearly 250,000 inhabitants, many in family graves. I believe the cemetery to be around 125 acres in size. Rich poor Protestant and Catholic, all sorts of people lie here next to each other. The place is full of Belfast history, grave architecture, Victoriana, social history, military history and of course there is the wildlife! come and see it for yourself

In this episode of "California Travel Tips," Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) goes on one of LA's best hikes — the trek to Big Horn Mine and Miner Vincent's Cabin in the San Gabriel Mountains. The trailhead to the cabin and mine is located at Vincent Gap on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), which connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the mountain village of Wrightwood. Be sure to buy a $5 adventure pass at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center before heading out, or you're likely be fined. HOW TO GET HERE: Macahambus Cave is located at Macahambus Hill, Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City. From the Airport (Cagayan de Oro Lumbia Airport), you can ride a jeepney (Talakag route) or better yet, ask the taxi drivers to take you there though it costs a lot. Take note, there's no entrance fee. It's free! Macahambus Cave is the most popular and most frequently visited cave in Cagayan de Oro City since the cave itself is absolutely a historically picturesque spot. Macahambus Cave is a "thru" cave, which means it can be entered at one end and exited at the other. It has three chambers, the hide-out and exit of Kagay-anon soldiers and their families in the Battle of Macahambus Hill which marked the first victory of the Filipinos against the Americans in the entire Phil-American War in this ...

Pere Lachaise is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have had the privilege of visiting. Everywhere i looked, there was a picture to be taken. I took these pictures back in 2006 and created a video with them and added a beautiful piece of music by J. Brahms - Danse hongroise #4. The original video was lost in a computer crash, so I just recreated it to share with you all. ENJOY!!!!!
Vacation travel video about destination Edinburgh in Scotland. In the centre of the old town, Edinburgh Castle sits atop the basalt cone of a long-extinct volcano. It is the most visited castle in Scotland and still guarded by soldiers but it is now mainly tourists who storm the defiant rock. Northumbrian king, Edwin, commanded the castle to be built in the seventh century A.D., the "castle on the hill", Edinburgh. The Royal Mile leads from the mighty fortress, downwards, a sloping road from which narrow streets branch off. Just off the upper Royal Mile is the church and cemetery of Greyfriars with its many historical and atmospheric tombs. Its cemetery became well known due to two Irishmen who exhumed newly-buried corpses in 1827 in order to sell them to the local anatomical institute. The...

This is only my second visit to the cemetery. Pardon the expression but Belfast City Cemetery is alive with history, architecture, fascinating facts, nature and full of leading Belfast celebrities of their day. Come and find out for yourself! BCC was purchased in 1866 by Belfast Corporation (now the council) and was officially opened on August 1, 1869 as the city's first municipal burial ground. The cemetery provides an important insight into the history of Belfast. It is a recognised historical site and shows many fine examples of Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic revival architecture.
