The Classic of NeiJia TaiJiQuan was written by a mythical character known as Zhang SanFeng (
Chan SangFeng). In it are explained the 13 essences and the methodology of movement that is NeiJia TaiJiQuan.
Here is my interpretation
of this famous text, gleaned from the insights of my teacher Dr YK Leung PhD (
Monk Shi DeLon) and my own studies. I definitely reserve the right to update my interpretation later as my personal experiences with the art of TaiJiQuan and my understanding of myself and of this text increase.
Here is my own humble effort at interpreting this important classic. My form is not perfect and I am aware I have much to work on, however, I hope I express the below ideas in my movement

TaiJiQuan Classic
Scripture written by Zhang SanFeng
一舉動周身俱要輕靈
One part moves, all parts move lightly and quickly
尤須貫串
Focus on moving from inside, connecting like a whip and clicking like a string of pearls
氣宜鼓盪
Energise your spine upwards like steam, pure and full
神宜內斂
Capture your intention inside dantien
無使有缺陷處
Emptiness when you sink, leave no spaces
無使有凹凸處 .
Find the harmony of centre, move backwards, forwards and around it leaving no structural imbalances
無使有斷續處
Allow the subconscious to be in complete control,
Do not allow your attention to be drawn into the conscious
其根在腳
Uproot from the heel
發於腿
Transmit the movement up the leg
主宰於腰
Aim from the hip and spine, directing from the waist
行於手指
Manifest at the ends of the fingers
由腳而腿而腰
Heel to leg to spine
總須完整一氣
Have to become one
向前退後
Open and shut whether moving forwards or backwards
乃能得機得勢
To find balance and harmony and maintain the upper hand
有不得機得勢處
If you don't find harmony and balance you won't stay in control
身便散亂
Conscious thoughts will disturb the sequence of transmission
其病必於腰腿求之
Usually all problems are located in the lower section of transmission
上下前後左右皆然
Rise and sink, open, shut, left, right - get these right!
凡此皆是意
All are controlled by your subtle intention
不在外面
Which starts with the movement from the spine
有上即有下
If you want to go up, you've got to go down
有前即有後.
If you want to go forwards you must first go backwards
有左即有右.
If you want to go left, you've got to go right
如意要向上
if you want to go up
即寓下意
First you have to go down
若將物掀起而加以挫之之力
To overcome hard with soft
斯其根自斷
Make it break it's own root
乃攘之速而無疑
When they move, react, be decisive and follow without mercy
虛實宜分清楚
Clearly separate nothing and something
一處有一處虛實
Fill and empty alternately
處處總此一虛實
Emptying and filling must be distinct
周身節節貫串.
Connect the body like a whip - when one part moves, all parts must move
無令絲毫間斷耳
Allow not even the tiniest disconnection
長拳者
The TaiJi form
如長江大海
Flows like the mighty
Yangtze river into the sea
滔滔不絕也
Always flowing, never ending
掤、屢、擠、按、採、裂、肘、靠此八卦也
Bounce, roll, squeeze, sinking forwards (an), pluck, split, elbows and bump are the 8 martial essences like the trigrams
進步、退步、左顧、右盼、中定,此五行也
Open and shut, left and right and centre are the 5 essences of human movement like the five elements
掤、屢、擠、按、即乾、坤、坎、離、四正方也
Bounce, roll, squeeze and an are
Heaven, Earth,
Water and
Fire - the direct essences or strikes
採、裂、肘、靠、即巽、震、兌、艮、四斜角也
Pluck, split, elbow, bump are
Penetration, Lifting, Satisfying, and
Mountain are the indirect essences or strikes
進退顧盼定
Open, shut, left, right, centre
即金木水火土也
are the 5 elements:
Metal,
Wood, Water, Fire,
Earth
合之則為十三勢也
Combine these 13 essences equally to complete your power
