Hyunju "Juju" Chang (born September 17, 1965) is an Emmy Award-winning American television journalist for ABC News, and currently serves as an anchor of Nightline. She previously served as a special correspondent and fill-in anchor for Nightline. Previously she was the news anchor for ABC News’ morning news program Good Morning America from 2009–2011.
Juju Chang was born in Seoul, South Korea, to Okyong and Palki Chang and was raised in Sunnyvale, California, following her family’s emigration to the U.S. in 1969. She was a part of Adrian C. Wilcox High School’s graduating class of 1983. At a young age, Chang was a nationally ranked swimmer.
In 1987, she graduated with honors from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and communications. At Stanford, she was awarded the Edwin Cotrell Political Science Prize.
Chang began work for ABC in 1984 as a desk assistant. In 1991 she became a producer and off-air reporter for World News Tonight, producing live events coverage and stories for its "American Agenda" segment. Her off-air reporting assignments included the 1991 Gulf War (during which she was based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) and the 1992 U.S. presidential election.
Girls Write Now is a nonprofit organization serving at-risk girls from New York City public high schools. It was founded by Maya Nussbaum, now Executive Director, in 1998 during her senior year at Columbia University. As part of its core mentoring program, Girls Write Now matches young women from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in writing with professional women writers. In 2009, the Girls Write Now mentoring program was recognized by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities as an outstanding arts program for youth, and received the Coming Up Taller Award.
Girls Write Now mentors and mentees meet once a week to work on their writing, following the organization's aim to create a space and support system for girls' development as women and writers. The pieces the pairs work on are incorporated into mentees' writing portfolios, which are edited by the girls' mentors and submitted for publication.
Throughout the year, mentors and their mentees participate in genre-based group writing workshops, in which guest speakers talk about their craft and lead the group in writing exercises. The theme of each workshop shapes the development of mentees' six-genre writing portfolios.
Chang may refer to:
Juju or Ju-Ju are objects, such as amulets, and spells used in religious practice, as part of witchcraft in West Africa. Juju historically referred to traditional West African religions.
The term "juju", and the practices associated with it, travelled to the Americas from West Africa with the influx of slaves via the Atlantic slave trade and still survives in some areas, particularly among the various groups of Maroons, who have preserved their African traditions.
Juju is sometimes used to enforce a contract or ensure compliance. In a typical scenario, a juju spell will be placed on a Nigerian woman before she is trafficked into Europe for a life in prostitution, to ensure that she will pay back her traffickers and won't escape. The witch doctor casting the spell requires a payment for this service. Juju is also commonly used in an attempt to affect the outcome of football games.
Contrary to common belief, Vodun is not related to juju, despite the linguistic and spiritual similarities. Juju has acquired some karmic attributes in more recent times: good juju can stem from almost any good deed; bad juju can be spread just as easily. These ideas revolve around the luck and fortune portions of juju. The use of juju to describe an object usually involves small items worn or carried; these generally contain medicines produced by witch doctors.
