Pakistan (i/ˈpækᵻstæn/ or i/pɑːkiˈstɑːn/; Urdu: پاكستان ALA-LC: Pākistān, pronounced [pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاكستان ALA-LC: Islāmī Jumhūriyah Pākistān IPA: [ɪslɑːmiː d͡ʒʊmɦuːriəɪh pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), is a country in South Asia. It is the sixth-most populous country with a population exceeding 199 million people. It is the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area with an area covering 881,913 km2 (340,509 sq mi). Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast respectively. It is separated from Tajikistan by Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
The territory that now constitutes Pakistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the Mehrgarh of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including Hindus, Indo-Greeks, Muslims, Turco-Mongols, Afghans and Sikhs. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the subcontinent's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of the Subcontinent where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.

Security studies, also known as International security studies, which advanced rapidly during the Cold War and is traditionally held to be an academic sub-field of the wider discipline of international relations. However, the term is also often extended to include the academic study of Homeland Security.
At its core, international security studies, as an area of inquiry, takes organized violence as its focus, and the steps individuals and aggregations of individuals can take to both employ organized violence effectively and, much more importantly, to protect themselves from organized violence (accumulation of knowledge in the former being essential for the accumulation of knowledge in the latter). Thus subjects can range from the micro—weapons types, effectiveness, tactics, human-weapons interfaces, individual and group motivations—to the macro; including the causes of war, nuclear strategy, military doctrine, defense spending, and conventional and unconventional strategy.

Since its founding in 1947, the army of Pakistan has dominated the state, embroiling the country in an enduring conflict with India over Kashmir. Despite repeated losses, the Pakistani army remains committed to achieving its military goals in the region. The employment of non-state actors in proxy wars has elevated this conflict to new and disastrous heights. Dr. Christine Fair, assistant professor of Security Studies at Georgetown University’s Center for Peace and Security Studies analyzes the factors motivating the Pakistani army in its seemingly futile fight. She proposes the key to understanding the situation in Pakistan lies in understanding the strategic culture of the military. Pakistan Army: Will it hinder or help Indo-Pak détente? By C.Christine Fair, Assistant Professor, Security Studies Program, Georgetown University, USA. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to New Delhi for the swearing in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed hope for better ties between India and Pakistan. However, a lot depends on the role of the Pakistan army and its equations with the civilian government. Against this background, the talk draws from Dr. Fair’s book, Fighting to the End: the Pakistan Army’s Way of War, which describes the strategic culture of the Pakistan army and its ramifications for international security.

C. Christine Fair discusses findings from her recent book, Fighting to the End: The Pakistan Army's Way of War. Pakistan's army has dominated the state for most of its 66 years. It has locked the country in an enduring rivalry with India to revise the maps in Kashmir and to resist India's slow but inevitable rise. To prosecute these dangerous policies, the army employs non-state actors under the security of its ever-expanding nuclear umbrella. From the army's distorted view of history, the army is victorious as long as can resist India's purported hegemony and the territorial status quo. To acquiesce is defeat. Because the army is unlikely to abandon these preferences, the world must prepare for an ever more dangerous future Pakistan.
