STORYLINE:
A car bomb exploded near a Baghdad police station Friday, killing four people and injuring four others, police said.
Hospital sources said one person arrived dead at the al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital and four others were severely injured.
Officers guarding the police station in the capital's southern Dora neighbourhood opened fire on the vehicle as it sped toward them and exploded, a police official said.
Baghdad's Dora neighbourhood has become a flashpoint in recent days, with several street battles between insurgents and
Iraqi National Guard troops and slayings of government officials.
Insurgents have stepped up attacks on
Iraqi police and government officials in an effort to ruin Sunday's national elections, which will create a 275-member
National Assembly and regional legislatures.
A string of attacks were carried out by insurgents nationwide against schools that will serve as polling centres Thursday night and early Friday.
The insurgents attacked the al-Nahrawan school in al-Ghazaliyah neighbourhood western Baghdad on Friday with mortar and machine-guns, causing slight damage to the outer wall of the school.
The insurgents also fired rockets at the al-Mu'tasim Secondary School in al-Bayaa neighbourhood southern Baghdad.
