Magna Graecia (/ˌmæɡnə ˈɡriːsiə, ˈɡriːʃə/, US /ˌmæɡnə ˈɡreɪʃⁱə/; Latin meaning "Great Greece", Greek: Μεγάλη Ἑλλάς, Megálē Hellás) is the name of the coastal areas of Southern Italy on the Tarentine Gulf that were extensively populated by Greek settlers; particularly the Achaean settlements of Croton, and Sybaris, and to the north, the settlements of Cumae and Neapolis. The settlers who began arriving in the 8th century BC brought with them their Hellenic civilization, which was to leave a lasting imprint in Italy, such as in the culture of ancient Rome, in which the Roman poet Ovid in his poem Fasti referred to the south of Italy as the land of greater Greece.
In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crises (famine, overcrowding, etc.), the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began to settle in southern Italy (Cerchiai, pp. 14–18). Also during this period, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea, Eastern Libya and Massalia (Marseille). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian Peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, “Great Greece”), since it was so densely inhabited by the Greeks. The ancient geographers differed on whether the term included Sicily or merely Apulia and Calabria — Strabo being the most prominent advocate of the wider definitions.
Documentary ancient civilizations | ancient Greece | Magna Graecia. This is spectacular documentary movie about ancient Greece in Magna Graecia. Magna Graecia (Megalē Hellas) refers to the coastal areas of southern Italy which were colonized by various ancient Greek city-states from the 8th to 5th centuries BCE. Sicily, although also a region of Greek colonization, is not usually included in this area. However, later writers such as Strabo did include Sicily and the term even came to signify the entire Greek world. The original region extends from the Euboean colony of Cumae (probably the earliest and founded c. 740 BCE) to the Spartan colony of Tarentum (founded c. 706 BCE). The last colony to be founded was Heraclea in 433 BCE. Greek colonists, following in the footsteps of the Bronze...

Note: I speak Modern Greek (Lesvos dialect), the older Greko man speaks in Greko. This is a trailer for the second of three documentaries we shot in the Greko and Griko towns of Southern Italy. The ancient/Byzantine Greeks left their mark, and it was amazing for us to see their legacy. This trailer is for the Greko area of Calabria, shot by Basil. Thanks to the help we received from Maria-Olimpia Squillaci, Danilo Brancati and Eleonora Petrulli. The third film is set in Reggio where we met other Greko speakers, that trailer and documentary is ready later this year. Please find the time to support these amazing people. There are a range of associations, language campaigns and people you can support. Reach out to them. Our Docos will end up on a channel here next year and a few international...
