The training was compulsory not only to create good citizens of the state, but also to prepare the boy's future life for spiritual realization. The irresponsible life of sense enjoyment was unknown to the children of the followers of the varṇāśrama system. The boy was even injected with spiritual acumen before being placed by the father in the womb of the mother. Both the father and the mother were responsible for the boy's success in being liberated from the material bondage. That is the process of successful family planning. It is to beget children for complete perfection. Without being self-controlled, without being disciplined and without being fully obedient, no one can become successful in following the instructions of the spiritual master, and without doing so, no one is able to go back to Godhead." For you, child-worship is more important than deity-worship. If you cannot spend time with him, then stop the duties of pujari. At least you must take good care of your son until he is four years old, and if after that time you are unable any more to take care of him then I shall take care. These children are given to us by Krishna, they are Vaisnavas and we must be very careful to protect them. These are not ordinary children, they are Vaikuntha children, and we are very fortunate we can give them chance to advance further in Krishna Consciousness. That is very great responsibility, do not neglect it or be confused. Your duty is very clear." Any other consideration is certainly mixed with material attachment. The parents are responsible for the children's upbringing, but they must consider children's wants and teach them how to achieve them by founding their desires on guru, sādhu and śāstra." "The worst situation for children and adolescents is to be without a goal to advance towards. If there is no goal, the mind will stay unfocused and lazy. These are all qualities of the state of mind known as ‘the devil’s workshop.’ They will look for something to do, to play with, to give them happiness, but if they are in the wrong association then they will not find what they are looking for. They will take to sense gratification of many kinds: sex, drugs, gambling, computer gaming, drinking, violence, and others. None of these can ever satisfy their desires, but due to the dual potencies of illusion they will seek out such false satisfaction ad infinitum. To prevent this, we must remember that the association our children have will dictate their goals, and we can only give them our own association to a small degree. The influence of their peers will have a far more profound effect on them. It is for this reason that it is necessary to place them in the society of friends, elders, and well-wishers of their generation who will encourage their Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Gurukula is meant to facilitate the fulfillment of this necessity." Young children naturally think, “Let us have fun while we are young.” In itself this is not so bad, but if not guided and restricted, they can easily fall into gross sense gratification such as illicit sex and it could become a long-lasting addiction that is very hard to break. Such enjoyment, when unrestricted, easily ruins the bodies and minds of children. Therefore, not giving them the right guidance and allowing them to fall into such sense enjoyment is very irresponsible. The ‘Puritan’ movement was formed to try to ‘protect’ young children by denying them any form of enjoyment while youthful. However, this is another extreme, and it is unnatural and harmful.
