"India consists of a lot of states, each with their own languages and cultures, and every regional language has its own style of film making," explains film director Umesh Kulkami in this video-clip. He adds that there is a common element of ethos which connects the states:
"Many people outside India perceive the Indian film industry as Bollywood only. But recently, the regional film makers have started to show their films outside India as well. The last 5-10 years, people outside India have started to realize that there is something beyond Bollywood," he says.
Entering the film market's distribution network is an up-hill battle for these regional films because of the dominance of the Bollywood film industry, but a community of independent and semi-independent film makers are increasingly giving strength to each other.
Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni is a Marathi film director. He is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Born in 1976 in Pune. He received a National Film Award for Best Film in 2010.

After achieving filmmaking's highest honour in the country for Deool, Umesh Kulkarni has now ventured into ad filmmaking and will be exclusively directing Ad films for Blue Drop Films Private Limited.
An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Umesh is known for Marathi films such as Valu (The Wild Bull), Vihir (The Well) and Deool (The Temple). Kulkarni also directed notable short films such as Girni, Three of Us, Vilay and Gaarud. Girni won the National Film Award for the Best Non Feature Film.
Valu, released in January 2008 was featured in the Berlin film festival.
Vihir was featured in Berlin film festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival 2010, Holland.
Deool won the 2011 National Award for Best Feature Film.

After achieving filmmaking's highest honour in the country for Deool, Umesh Kulkarni has now ventured into ad filmmaking and will be exclusively directing Ad films for Blue Drop Films Private Limited.
An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Umesh is known for Marathi films such as Valu (The Wild Bull), Vihir (The Well) and Deool (The Temple). Kulkarni also directed notable short films such as Girni, Three of Us, Vilay and Gaarud. Girni won the National Film Award for the Best Non Feature Film.
Valu, released in January 2008 was featured in the Berlin film festival.
Vihir was featured in Berlin film festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival 2010, Holland.
Deool won the 2011 National Award for Best Feature Film.
