Pit Bulls Pit bulls are some of the most sweetest and gentlest dogs that you can ever hope to get for your family. Unfortunately thanks to horrible people who use them in underground dog fighting operations, this breed gets a lot of negative attention that it does not deserve whatsoever. Pit bulls are viewed by society as a vicious breed that is capable of severely hurting not just other dogs but other people as well. First of all, it’s never the dogs fault for how it behaves. It’s always the fault of its owner because either the owner has neglected and allowed the dog to behave this way or they’ve specifically encouraged it and raised them that way. This is why most pit bulls don’t get adopted and have a higher shelter rate than other breeds. 5. Bats Bats get a seriously bad rep thanks to Dracula but here’s the real truth: there’s only one bat out there that actually does suck your blood and that’s, of course, the vampire bat. Actually, there are three species of vampire bats that don’t go out seeking the blood of humans but rather they hunt for sleeping mammals, yes, this sometimes includes humans. Once they locate their target, they make a small incision with their teeth and then use their tongues to lap up the delicious nutrient-rich blood. Oh, and bats are relatively clean creatures that spend multiple hours grooming themselves. They are believed to be carriers of plenty of diseases but that being said, there have only been three confirmed deaths from bat-transmitted diseases in the entirety of Australia’s history, which is 250 years. 4. Spiders Multiple hairy legs, several sets of eyes, and fangs that can deliver venomous bites? Well, it’s no wonder people are afraid of spiders. On paper, they sound pretty scary but in real life they look just as scary, if not, even more than what they’ve been described as. The thing is that looks can be deceiving. Most spiders are actually doing the world a favor by consuming harmful insects and keeping insect populations in check so remember that the next time you’re about to bring the wad of newspaper down on these friendly tenants. Oh and not all spiders are venomous. Heck, there’s even a spider that was just recently discovered to be a vegetarian, for the most part. Just know which ones to stay away from *cough cough* black widows. 3. Sharks Of course, when you think about misunderstood animals your mind will always somehow manage to think of sharks. Generalizing sharks as vicious, blood-thirsty predators has sadly become normalized over the past several decades thanks to the movie Jaws and its sequels. Even the movie’s director, Steven Spielberg, has vocalized his regrets with how the movie has helped depict the great white and other sharks as killer monsters of the sea. One of the most widely popular myths out there that is believed about sharks is that they attack people, most notably surfers, because of how their silhouettes resemble that of a sea lion. This, however, is untrue. Fatalities from a shark bite are usually rare but they usually occur because of blood loss, such as what happened to a young surfer in San Onofre, California in June 2005. 2. Snakes There’s just something about snakes that makes people say “nope.” Is it the whole biting you with their fangs and injecting deadly venom into your bloodstream thing? Or the fact that some of them grow to be longer than two full-sized adults stacked together? Well, for starters, not all snakes are venomous and even then sometimes snakes will deliver a “dry bite” as a warning, that means a bite that doesn’t deliver venom. It’s not their fault. Snakes have poor vision and usually, people who are bitten have either mishandled or harassed the snake in some way to make it feel threatened enough to strike. A lot of snakes are kind and gentle creatures that enjoy being kept as household pets. 1. Rats Rats. Just hearing the word probably sends a bone-chilling sensation down your spine and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand tall. These poor little guys have been getting the cold shoulder from humanity ever since the 14th century when the Black Death spread throughout Europe from 1346 up until 1353 and wiped out approximately 75 to 200 million people. More specifically, it was the black rat that played host to the infected fleas that carried the plague and would then transfer the disease to humans who came into contact with them. Domestic rats have been shown to be quite friendly and are as smart as their nondomestic counterparts. They have even been known to show a sense of morality and keep themselves well groomed.
