The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

For over a century the German Ruhr area was dominated by the coal and steel industries. But today its 53 cities and more than five million inhabitants, see culture as its main resource. The Ruhr has transformed itself into the third largest urban area in Western Europe. And the EU has designated it the European Capital of Culture 2010, giving it the opportunity to stage 3000 cultural projects throughout the year.

"Most people from outside the Ruhr don't picture the area as particularly nice. Unfortunately that image isn't really up to date. Most people think the region is still muddy and covered with dust, that it's impossible to hang the laundry outside and that people sweat away here. But that isn't correct anymore."
The opening event of the Cultural Capital 2010 took place at the old coal mine of Zollverein in Essen - a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site. A tourist guide for the site, Christian Schröder sees the Ruhr as setting an example.

"We have received visitors from Asia, South America, North America, from Africa, from the whole world. Basically the Ruhr area is an example of structural change - a challenge other regions have to deal with as well. In this sense we are just a pilot project."

Where centuries ago coal and steel was produced, the buildings are now restaurants, bars, art studios and locations for celebrating. Today the Ruhr area is home to 19 universities, 100 concert halls, 120 theatres and more than 200 museums and festivals. The motto of the Cultural Capital 2010 is "Change by culture - culture by change." And for these people in the Ruhr, celebrating their cultural heritage is an integral part of their lives.

To be honest: the Ruhr area is not the typical tourist destination but suprisingly it has more to offer than you might think! Especially the combination of Coal and Culture in Essen - or more detailed: the transformation of the industrial area to the European capital of culture in 2010 - sparked my interest.

The Duisburg Zoo, founded on May 12, 1934, is one of the largest zoological gardens in Germany. It is especially well known for its dolphinarium and, since 1994, for breeding koalas.
Far less well known are the breeding successes in other areas, for example, with fossas (civits from Madagascar) and Red River hogs.
The zoo is located in the northern part of the Duisburg urban forest on the border with Mülheim on the Ruhr. Federal highway A 3 divides the zoo into western and an eastern parts, which are joined by a leafy country bridge. The highway is scarcely noticeable to the visitors.
Dolphinarium
The Dolphinarium is inhabited by nine bottle-nosed dolphins Ivo, Pepina, Delphi, Daisy, Dolly, Donna, Diego, Darwin and Dörte, which live in a pool containing about 3 million liters of seawater. It is not cleaned chemically, but with special equipment using air. It is the largest dolphinarium in Germany. Depending on the season, two or three performances take place every day in the large arena. During the week, the dolphinarium is free-of-charge for visitors between performances (but not on Sundays or bank holidays). It regularly offers special treats, such as "An Evening with the Dolphins" or "Zookeeper for a Day" and weddings or children's birthday parties can be celebrated there. Dolphins have been born and bred in Duisburg several times: Duphi (1988; since died), Delphi (1992), Daisy (1996), Duke (2001; since died) and Dolly (2007, the daughter of Delphi). However, on several occasions the offspring did not reach maturity. In September 2007, Donna, the daughter of Pepina, was born, and she has been on show to visitors since 27 February 2008.

It is especially well known for its dolphinarium and, since 1994, for breeding koalas. The zoo is located in the northern part of the Duisburg urban forest on the border with Mülheim on the Ruhr. Federal highway A 3 divides the zoo into western and an eastern parts, which are joined by a leafy country bridge. The highway is scarcely noticeable to the visitors. Dolphinarium The Dolphinarium is inhabited by nine bottle-nosed dolphins Ivo, Pepina, Delphi, Daisy, Dolly, Donna, Diego, Darwin and Dörte, which live in a pool containing about 3 million liters of seawater. It is not cleaned chemically, but with special equipment using air. It is the largest dolphinarium in Germany. Depending on the season, two or three performances take place every day in the large arena. During the week, the dolphinarium is free-of-charge for visitors between performances (but not on Sundays or bank holidays). It regularly offers special treats, such as "An Evening with the Dolphins" or "Zookeeper for a Day" and weddings or children's birthday parties can be celebrated there. Dolphins have been born and bred in Duisburg several times: Duphi (1988; since died), Delphi (1992), Daisy (1996), Duke (2001; since died) and Dolly (2007, the daughter of Delphi). However, on several occasions the offspring did not reach maturity. In September 2007, Donna, the daughter of Pepina, was born, and she has been on show to visitors since 27 February 2008.

About five million people live in the Barcelona metropolitan area.[3][4][5][6][7] It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres (1,680 ft) high.
Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. The Ruhr has transformed itself into the third largest urban area in Western Europe. And the EU has designated it the European Capital of Culture 2010, giving it the opportunity to stage 3000 cultural projects throughout the year.

Most people think the region is still muddy and covered with dust, that it's impossible to hang the laundry outside and that people sweat away here. But that isn't correct anymore."
The opening event of the Cultural Capital 2010 took place at the old coal mine of Zollverein in Essen - a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site. A tourist guide for the site, Christian Schröder sees the Ruhr as setting an example.

The motto of the Cultural Capital 2010 is "Change by culture - culture by change." And for these people in the Ruhr, celebrating their cultural heritage is an integral part of their lives.

Far less well known are the breeding successes in other areas, for example, with fossas (civits from Madagascar) and Red River hogs.
The zoo is located in the northern part of the Duisburg urban forest on the border with Mülheim on the Ruhr. Federal highway A 3 divides the zoo into western and an eastern parts, which are joined by a leafy country bridge. The highway is scarcely noticeable to the visitors.
Dolphinarium
The Dolphinarium is inhabited by nine bottle-nosed dolphins Ivo, Pepina, Delphi, Daisy, Dolly, Donna, Diego, Darwin and Dörte, which live in a pool containing about 3 million liters of seawater. It is not cleaned chemically, but with special equipment using air. It is the largest dolphinarium in Germany. Depending on the season, two or three performances take place every day in the large arena. During the week, the dolphinarium is free-of-charge for visitors between performances (but not on Sundays or bank holidays). It regularly offers special treats, such as "An Evening with the Dolphins" or "Zookeeper for a Day" and weddings or children's birthday parties can be celebrated there. Dolphins have been born and bred in Duisburg several times: Duphi (1988; since died), Delphi (1992), Daisy (1996), Duke (2001; since died) and Dolly (2007, the daughter of Delphi). However, on several occasions the offspring did not reach maturity. In September 2007, Donna, the daughter of Pepina, was born, and she has been on show to visitors since 27 February 2008.
