STORYLINE:
Ghana urged that statements from the international community on the global food price crisis are turned into action on the final day of the
World Food Summit on Thursday.
"The food crisis, which the world faces today, is so serious that it would be disastrous for the survival of mankind if the conclusions reached at this historic summit suffer the same fate," the Chief Advisor to the President of Ghana said.
"It is our fervent hope that for once the rhetoric will be moved to definitive action," Mary Chinery-Hesse added.
The comments came as world leaders wrapped up the three day UN summit at the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on how rapidly rising food prices are aggravating hunger worldwide.
Delegates at the food summit worked late into the night on Wednesday to try to forge a compromise on a strategy to combat the crisis that is increasing hunger worldwide
.
He said world food production must rise by 50 percent by
2030 to meet increasing demand.
