The Hebrew term "pelistim" occurs 286 times in the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible (of which 152 times in 1 Samuel), whereas in the Greek Septuagint version of the Hebrew Bible, the equivalent term phylistiim occurs only 12 times, with the remaining 269 references instead using the term "allophylos" ("of another tribe"). According to Joshua 13:3 and 1 Samuel 6:17, the land of the Philistines (or Allophyloi), called Philistia, was a Pentapolis in south-western Levant comprised the five city-states of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath, from Wadi Gaza in the south to the Yarqon River in the north, but with no fixed border to the east. The Bible portrays them at one period of time as among the Kingdom of Israel's most dangerous enemies. Biblical scholars have connected the Philistines to other biblical groups such as Caphtorim and the Cherethites and Pelethites, which have both been identified with Crete, and leading to the tradition of an Aegean origin, although this theory has been disputed.
Outside of the Bible, the evidence for and origins of the Philistines are not clear and is the subject of considerable research and speculation in biblical archaeology. Since 1822, scholars have connected the Biblical Philistines with the Egyptian "Peleset" inscriptions, all five of which appear from c.1150 BCE just as archaeological references to "Kinaḫḫu" or "Ka-na-na" (Canaan) come to an end, and since 1873 comparisons were drawn between them and to the Aegean "Pelasgians". While the evidence for these connections is etymological and has been disputed, this identification is held by the majority of egyptologists and biblical archaeologists. Archaeological research to date has been unable to corroborate a mass settlement of Philistines during the Ramesses III era

*SPOILER ALERT*
No More Heroes 2, having finished it recently, was an awesome game. It has its flaws (especially the disappointing final boss), but it's a great sequel to the first game. I'm still having a hell of a time deciding which I like more. They're both so different...
One of the main reasons why it's so great is because of its boss battles- and boss music. Especially the theme of Rank 4, Margaret. I've probably never been this quickly hooked by a boss theme. Ever.
It's so catchy it should be illegal. It's so catchy that even Travis starts humming it after the battle. Not to mention it establishes Margaret's personality in the absence of a large-scale intro. I love the vocals. The lyrics. The beat. The guitar. Probably my favourite NMH boss theme at the moment. It's just so... upbeat. I love it.

The Philistines (

The Bible paints them as the Kingdom of Israel's most dangerous enemy. Originating somewhere in the Aegean, their population was around 25,000 in the 12th century BC, rising to a peak of 30,000 in the 11th century BC, of which the Aegean element was not more than half the total, and perhaps much less.
The etymology of the word into English is from Old French Philistin, from Classical Latin Philistinus found in the writings of Josephus, from Late Greek Philistinoi (Phylistiim in the Septuagint) found in the writings by Philo, from Hebrew Plištim, (e.g. 1 Samuel 17:36; 2 Samuel 1:20; Judges 14:3; Amos 1:8), "people of Plešt" ("Philistia"); cf. Akkadian Palastu, Egyptian Parusata.

Awesome Video Game Music 171: Philistine (Rank 4: Margaret)
*SPOILER ALERT* No More Heroes 2, having finished it recently, was an awesome game. It has its flaws (especially the disappointing final boss), but it's a great sequel to the first game. I'm still having a hell of a time deciding which I like more. They're both so different... One of the main reasons why it's so great is because of its boss battles- and boss music. Especially the theme of Rank 4, Margaret. I've probably never been this quickly hooked by a boss theme. Ever. It's so catchy it should be illegal. It's so catchy that even Travis starts humming it after the battle. Not to mention it establishes Margaret's personality in the absence of a large-scale intro. I love the vocals. The lyrics. The beat. The guitar. Probably my favourite NMH boss theme at the moment. It's just so.... -

Anything can happen at the Voewood Festival, this year The Philistines were joined on stage by the author John Niven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Niven) for a rousing, largely improv version of The Small Faces - All Or Nothing. I handed my camera to the lovely Allison, (who had been interviewing Glen earlier), to capture the moment. I guess because it was my camera thats why there's an awful lot of me in this clip but hopefully it captures the whole band plus John continuing The Faces maxim of having a good time, all the time! DD

Shimshon Hagibor was left helpless. The Plishtim had cut off his hair and gouged out his eyes. He was forced into entertaining thousands of people who couldn't wait to see him die. At this point Shimshon demonstrated for us a big yesod in Yiddishkeit; he cried out to Hashem. The situation was hopless! He had no strength and was totally vulnerable but he knew the truth. He knew that everything is from Hashem. He knew that he could be the weakest of the weak, but with Hashem's help anything is possible. According to nature there was no way he could have pulled down those pillars holding up thousands of cheering Plishtim! But Shimshon knew that there is no such thing as nature. Hashem defines reality and He can portray it however He pleases. So Shimshon asked Hashem for strength to exact vengeance from the Plishtim, and Hashem came through.
We all have our situations where we feel like a Shimshon; tied in chains, totally hopeless. But if we stop and think we will realize that it is NEVER hopeless. Hashem is always there waiting for us to cry out to him! There is nothing He can't Help us with! Whether its a tough Tosfos, shidduch, or illness, Hashem has the answers. All we have to do is put our trust in Him. "Karov Hashem l'chol kor'av, l'chol asher yik'riuhu b'emes." Close is Hashem to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him sincerely."
