Happy Betta in a PUDDLE!? Lets find out!

Often people use the puddle myth to justify confining Bettas in small jars and containers. They are told that because Bettas "live in small puddles" then they are "happy" being held in a cup or a vase. In reality.. only a small amount of Bettas are actually trapped in puddles in the dry season.. those that are try to escape by jumping and those that cannot starve or die from their own toxins from their waste.
As pet owners we need to DO BETTER then the bare minimum. We need to provide space, clean filtered water, and a stable heat source. These fish deserve the best care we can provide.

With our Betta fish pretty much at death's door, we decided it was worth a shot to aspirate him to relieve his swelling. This is the document of the procedure, which was successful at removing the bulk of dropsy related fluid. 2 weeks post operation, he is doing pretty well and shows no signs of infection. Hopefully he'll make a full recovery.
If we had to do it all again, we should have definitely worn surgical gloves (instead of just an intense hand scrub) and potentially added more anesthesia.
UPDATE: the actual total amount of fluid drawn was .5 ml not 70ml!

There was a single male siamese fighting fish Betta splendes in the ricefield aquarium made by members of Association of Fishkeepers from Wrocław (http://www.wta.org.pl) at ZooBotanica 2013 fair. Betta was supposed to swim in the upper terrace, where glass was installed in the wall to allow the viewers to see the fish. However, our Betta had diffferent plans, and each time we put him into the upper terrace - sooner or later he jumped out, all the way down to the main compartment of the aquarium.
It's very interesting to observe the behaviour of the fish - he is clearly examining the wall of the terrace, to find the best spot (even though during the secong jump he mis-identified the spot, and chose to go over dry land instead of going through the small "waterfall" - but he succeeded anyway).
A very intelligent fish, which deserves to be kept in a well furnished aquarium, not in a fishbowl with kitsch-colorful gravel and plastic plant!
And remember - ALWAYS cover tight your Betta tank, because this fish can jump out and escape through even smallest crevices in the aquarium hood !!

This video teaches betta fish owners how to groom their own betta with ease. Guides or videos on this subject is somewhat lacking so here's a tutorial on how to do it.
Trimming fins are used mostly by pet owners who want to have a big chance in winning competitions but it's not just for competition, trimming may be an additional activity between pet lover and their pets. Like me I just want to trim my bettas so they always look good. I hope when you do this to your pet, you practice extreme care. Competitors usually go beyond the normal trimming to make the fins super beautiful just to win an award. Not all but some are not thinking of what might happen to the fish, they just want a pretty fish. Over trimming hurts the fish so I hope you don't overdo it and think about the fish.

How to start Female Betta fish sorority or community tank. Everyone has different ways and views. I'm sharing how I did it and what worked for me. Recommended minimum tank size would be 20 gallons with heater and filter. Be sure to cycle the tank before adding your fish. The tank needs to be heavily planted with places to hide. Choose your female bettas carefully. Adding a group of at least 5 females is preferable. Be sure to acclimate them and when adding them into the tank try to get as little of the water in the cup into the tank, especially if the cup water is very dirty. Once they're in the tank watch them closely for several days. Aggression can sometimes not show for several hours to several days. I did not have any issues with aggression. My girls all get along very well.
Do lots of research before starting a Betta sorority.
** Female Bettas do not always get along, there are never any guarantees with Betta fish. If you choose to put females together you need to be sure you have the resources and the space to separate them if necessary.

Betta
Betta /ˈbɛtə/ is a large genus of small, often colorful, freshwater ray-finned fishes in the gourami family (Osphronemidae). By far the best known Betta species, however, is B. splendens, the Siamese fighting fish.
Characteristics
All the Betta species are small fishes, but they vary considerably in size, ranging from under 2.5 cm (1 in) total length in B. chanoides to 12.5 cm (5 in) in the Akar betta (B. akarensis).
Bettas are anabantoids, which means they can breathe atmospheric air using a unique organ called the labyrinth. This accounts for their ability to thrive in low-oxygen water conditions that would kill most other fish, such as rice paddies, slow-moving streams, drainage ditches, and large puddles.
The various bettas can be divided into two groups, based on their spawning behaviour: some build bubble nests, such as B. splendens, while others are mouthbrooders, such as B. picta. The mouthbrooding species are sometimes called "pseudo bettas", and are sometimes speculated to have evolved from the nest-builders in an adaptation to their fast-moving stream habitats.

The International Betta Competition - magnificent fighting fish on show
During the "Aqua-Fisch" Kampffischfreunde.de presented the International Betta Competition. Kampffischfreunde.de is a chapter of the International Betta Congress (IBC). At the show over 300 beautiful bettas were exhibited and auctioned to a thrilled audience. The president of the IBC Joe Becerra talks about his impressions of this high-caliber event. A lot of bettas are shown in the gallery inside the video. -
Aspirating a Betta with Dropsy
With our Betta fish pretty much at death's door, we decided it was worth a shot to aspirate him to relieve his swelling. This is the document of the procedure, which was successful at removing the bulk of dropsy related fluid. 2 weeks post operation, he is doing pretty well and shows no signs of infection. Hopefully he'll make a full recovery. If we had to do it all again, we should have definitely worn surgical gloves (instead of just an intense hand scrub) and potentially added more anesthesia. This video teaches betta fish owners how to groom their own betta with ease. Guides or videos on this subject is somewhat lacking so here's a tutorial on how to do it. Trimming fins are used mostly by pet owners who want to have a big chance in winning competitions but it's not just for competition, trimming may be an additional activity between pet lover and their pets. Like me I just want to trim my bettas so they always look good. I hope when you do this to your pet, you practice extreme care. Competitors usually go beyond the normal trimming to make the fins super beautiful just to win an award. Not all but some are not thinking of what might happen to the fish, they just want a pretty fish. Over trimming hurts the fish so I hope you don't overdo it and think about the fish. -
How to start a Female Betta Sorority or Community Tank
How to start Female Betta fish sorority or community tank. Everyone has different ways and views. I'm sharing how I did it and what worked for me. Recommended minimum tank size would be 20 gallons with heater and filter. Be sure to cycle the tank before adding your fish. The tank needs to be heavily planted with places to hide. Choose your female bettas carefully. Adding a group of at least 5 females is preferable. Be sure to acclimate them and when adding them into the tank try to get as little of the water in the cup into the tank, especially if the cup water is very dirty. Once they're in the tank watch them closely for several days. Aggression can sometimes not show for several hours to several days. I did not have any issues with aggression. My girls all get along very well. Do lot... -

A very intelligent fish, which deserves to be kept in a well furnished aquarium, not in a fishbowl with kitsch-colorful gravel and plastic plant!
And remember - ALWAYS cover tight your Betta tank, because this fish can jump out and escape through even smallest crevices in the aquarium hood !!
