Marianne Leonie Petrus Thyssen (Dutch pronunciation: [mɑrˈjɑnə 'tɛi̯sə(n)]; born 24 July 1956 ) is a Belgian politician for the Christian Democratic and Flemish Party (CD&V). In 2014 she became the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility.
Born in Sint-Gillis-Waas, to a Flemish-speaking family, not related to the family of Baron Thyssen, Thyssen graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 1979, where she obtained a degree in law. She worked as a legal adviser for a Belgian organisation for the self-employed and small and medium-sized businesses Unizo and the women’s network Markant, becoming Director then acting Secretary-General at Unizo in 1991. From 1986-1988 she acted as legal adviser to the state secretary for public health and disability policy.
In 1991, Thyssen was elected as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Flanders with the CD&V, the Flemish Christian Democrats in Belgium. From 1995-2008 she served as municipal Councillor for Oud-Heverlee, a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant and in 2001 she became First Alderman for Oud-Heverlee. In 2008 Thyssen was elected leader of CD&V party.
A Ministry of Social Affairs or Department of Social Affairs is the common name for a government department found in states where the government is divided into ministries or departments. While there is some variation in the responsibilities of such ministries, the common thread between them is their responsibility for assisting members of society who are in a vulnerable position due to age, dependence on government aid, or being the employee in an employee/employer relationship. Ministries of this type cover matters such as social work, social protection and assistance, pensions, welfare, health and social security, and workplace standards for employees.
Examples of such ministries include:
Marianne (pronounced: [maʁjan]) is a national symbol of the French Republic, an allegory of liberty and reason, and a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty.
Marianne is displayed in many places in France and holds a place of honour in town halls and law courts. She symbolizes the "Triumph of the Republic", a bronze sculpture overlooking the Place de la Nation in Paris. Her profile stands out on the official government logo of the country, is engraved on French euro coins and appears on French postage stamps; it also was featured on the former franc currency. Marianne is one of the most prominent symbols of the French Republic, and is officially used on most government documents.
Marianne is a significant republican symbol, opposed to monarchy, and an icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of dictatorship. Other national symbols of France include the tricolor flag, the national motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, the national anthem La Marseillaise, as well as the coat of arms and the official Great Seal of France.
