The
Brexit referendum has changed the landscape of
British politics no matter the results, the
UK Independence Party (
UKIP) leader Nigel Farage said Thursday night at a meeting of the
Leave EU campaign.
Millions of
Britons went to about 41,
000 polling stations on Thursday to cast their ballots in the
European Union (
EU) referendum on whether their country should remain in or leave the
European bloc.
"
Tonight, whatever the result, is not one for recriminations, but for celebration of the landscape of British politics, in the course of the last few weeks, has changed, and it has changed forever. We'd all lose this battle tonight, [but] we will win this war, we will get our country back, we will get our independence back, and we will get our borders back," said
Farage.
"I promise you this, if the result is that we vote to leave, we must make sure the government carries out the will of the people
. If the vote is we haven't quite made it, then we've got a lot to look forward to as continued
EU members," he added.
Though the results of the referendum will not be released until Friday morning, pollster YouGov found that 54 percent of
British supported the UK remaining in the EU in a survey it carried out on Wednesday.
The pollster YouGov also put
Remain in the lead, saying that its online survey showed a 54-46 margin of victory.
Anti-EU campaigner
Kate Hoey said that if the UK has decided to remain in the EU,
Prime Minister David Cameron should keep his words to push for further reform of the EU.
"I think whatever happens, if it's a close vote for remain,
David Cameron is going to have such pressure within his own party. Well I don't think it's going to be the end of the matter, particularly if it's very close. And of course David Cameron, the prime minister, will have to honor all the promises he has made about what is going to happen if we voted for this so-called 'reform EU,'" she said.
Richard Tice, a co-founder of the Leave.EU campaign, said the referendum has made the British think about the situation of the European Union. If the Remain camp wins, they should keep the promise to reform the EU.
"The really good thing is there is going to be a very high turnout, which is great.
People who have never previously thought about the European Union, have felt engaged, they have taken an interest. And we on the leave side, if we lose -- it would be very close --
but we will hold the remain camp to account on all the promises that they have made, all the things they have said will not happen," said
Tice.
