Ehsan Jafri (1929 – 28 February 2002) was an Indian politician and former member of the 6th Lok Sabha for the Congress Party, who was killed in the Gulbarg Society massacre, which was one of the episodes of mob violence against Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
It has been alleged that on February 28th 2002, he was killed by a mob armed with machetes when he pleaded with them to spare the lives of the women and children who had taken refuge in his home. The Special Investigating Team concluded that he was killed after he fired at an agitated mob outside his house. His widow Zakia Jafri has subsequently argued that the state of Gujarat and its then Chief Minister or the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi was partly responsible for the violence and for the lack of police intervention in favor of the victims at Gulbarg Society. This argument has been rejected by a Special Investigation Committee which concluded that Modi had no responsibility for the incident.
Jafri (Arabic: جعفری ) is a surname commonly associated with those who are the descendants of the 6th Imam, Ja'far al-Sadiq, who was a direct descendant of Ali and Muhammad. Since the Jafri clan trace their lineage to Fatima Az-Zehra, they are a form of Sayyed who are the direct descendants of Muhammad. Many Shia Jafris lived in the Iraq, Iran, India and Pakistan. Some Sunni Muslims also associate with the surname Jafri.
Variant transliterations include al-Ja'fari, Jafari or Jaffrey.

Narendra Damodardas Modi (Gujarati: [nəreːnd̪rə d̪ɑːmoːd̪ərəd̪ɑːs moːd̪iː], born 17 September 1950) is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014. Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Varanasi. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which gave the party a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – a first for any party since 1984 – and was credited for 2014 BJP electoral victories in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Since taking office as Prime Minister, Modi's administration has focused on reforming and modernising India's infrastructure and government, reducing bureaucracy, encouraging increased foreign direct investment, improving national standards of health and sanitation and improving foreign relations. Modi has been appreciated for starting initiatives like Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India and Digital India. Earlier, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi's economic policies (credited with encouraging economic growth in Gujarat) have been praised, although his administration has also been criticised for failing to significantly improve the human development in the state and failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat riots. A Hindu nationalist and a former member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi remains a controversial figure domestically and internationally, despite his progressivism. Known for his tech savvy image, he is the second most followed politician on social media after U.S. President Barack Obama.

I've filmed inside the Gulberg society on multiple occasions - twice in 2002, once in 2007, and thrice in 2012. Each time, it is an eerie experience, standing inside the Jafri home, imagining Feb 28, 2002, with people packed inside seeking shelter. Mr Jafri desperately ringing up everyone he could. The mobs launching their multiple attacks...and that moment of decision when Mr Jafri decided to hand himself over to the mob, hoping all others would be spared.... My friend Manoj Mitta of TOI demolishes the myth of the so-called clean chit to Modi by SIT in his new book - http://www.thehoot.org/web/Undermining-the-SIT-s--clean-chit-/7306-1-1-9-true.html. 76-year-old Zakia Jafri has begun what may be the last legal battle to pin blame on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deadly riots that shook the state of Gujarat when he was chief minister, and claimed her husband's life. Zakia’s late husband Ahsan Jafri, a Congress leader, was hacked to death by a mob in riots that killed at least 1,000 people. She claims to have seen her husband, Ahsan, making desperate calls to the police before being dragged out of his ancestral home by sword-wielding men. Within minutes he was stripped and killed. Hers is the last case still in the court system filed after the riots that tries to implicate Modi. Jafri's two-storey house situated in Ahmedabad's Gulberg Society was a prime target of the violence where 69 Muslim residents were massacred.
Firing by former lawmaker Ehsan Jafri, one of the 69 victims of the Gulbarg Society massacre in Gujarat in 2002, "acted as a catalyst and infuriated the mob" that killed him, a court said yesterday while sentencing 11 of the attackers to life in jail and 13 others to lesser terms.
