76-year-old Zakia Jafri has begun what may be the last legal battle to pin blame on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deadly riots that shook the state of Gujarat when he was chief minister, and claimed her husband's life. Zakia’s late husband Ahsan Jafri, a Congress leader, was hacked to death by a mob in riots that killed at least 1,000 people. She claims to have seen her husband, Ahsan, making desperate calls to the police before being dragged out of his ancestral home by sword-wielding men. Within minutes he was stripped and killed. Hers is the last case still in the court system filed after the riots that tries to implicate Modi. Jafri's two-storey house situated in Ahmedabad's Gulberg Society was a prime target of the violence where 69 Muslim residents were massacred.

STORYLINE:
Angry Hindus set fire to homes in a shantytown in western India on Friday, killing at least 27 Muslims as they slept.
According to police about 300 Hindus set fire to a Muslim-dominated shantytown on the outskirts of Ahmadabad at about 2 a.m. on Friday (2030GMT on Thursday). Hundreds of shops and homes owned by Muslims were burned and gunshots crackled as the death toll mounted.
The latest violence raised the death toll on the religious minority to more than 100.
The attacks were triggered by a Muslim assault on a train Wednesday that left at least 58 dead, most of whom were Hindu nationalists.
On Thursday at least 76 people died when vengeful Hindu mobs roamed the blockaded streets of Ahmadabad and other Gujarat towns and cities, attacking Muslims in their homes, shops and vehicles.
In the worst violence Thursday, a Hindu mob of 2,000 people set fire to homes in an affluent Muslim neighbourhood in Ahmadabad burning to death at least 38 people, including 12 children.
Nearly 1,000 army soldiers arrived early on Friday in Ahmadabad. There was a curfew in 32 towns across Gujarat state and police assumed emergency powers of detention.

Ehsan Jafri
Ehsan Jafri (1929 – 28 February 2002) was an Indian politician and former member of the 6th Lok Sabha for the Congress Party, who was killed in the Gulbarg Society massacre, which was one of the episodes of mob violence against Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
It has been alleged that on February 28th 2002, he was killed by a mob armed with machetes when he pleaded with them to spare the lives of the women and children who had taken refuge in his home. The Special Investigating Team concluded that he was killed after he fired at an agitated mob outside his house. His widow Zakia Jafri has subsequently argued that the state of Gujarat and its then Chief Minister or the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi was partly responsible for the violence and for the lack of police intervention in favor of the victims at Gulbarg Society. This argument has been rejected by a Special Investigation Committee which concluded that Modi had no responsibility for the incident.

Jafri (Arabic: جعفری ) is a surname commonly associated with those who are the descendants of the 6th Imam, Ja'far al-Sadiq, who was a direct descendant of Ali and Muhammad. Since the Jafri clan trace their lineage to Fatima Az-Zehra, they are a form of Sayyed who are the direct descendants of Muhammad. Many Shia Jafris lived in the Iraq, Iran, India and Pakistan. Narendra Modi
Narendra Damodardas Modi (Gujarati: [nəreːnd̪rə d̪ɑːmoːd̪ərəd̪ɑːs moːd̪iː], born 17 September 1950) is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014. Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Varanasi. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which gave the party a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – a first for any party since 1984 – and was credited for 2014 BJP electoral victories in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

According to police about 300 Hindus set fire to a Muslim-dominated shantytown on the outskirts of Ahmadabad at about 2 a.m. on Friday (2030GMT on Thursday). Hundreds of shops and homes owned by Muslims were burned and gunshots crackled as the death toll mounted. The latest violence raised the death toll on the religious minority to more than 100. The attacks were triggered by a Muslim assault on a train Wednesday that left at least 58 dead, most of whom were Hindu nationalists. On Thursday at least 76 people died when vengeful Hindu mobs roamed the blockaded streets of Ahmadabad and other Gujarat towns and cities, attacking Muslims in their homes, shops and vehicles. In the worst violence Thursday, a Hindu mob of 2,000 people set fire to homes in an affluent Muslim neighbourhood in Ahmadabad burning to death at least 38 people, including 12 children. Nearly 1,000 army soldiers arrived early on Friday in Ahmadabad. There was a curfew in 32 towns across Gujarat state and police assumed emergency powers of detention. Angry Hindus set fire to homes in a shantytown in western India on Friday, killing at least 27 Muslims as they slept.
According to police about 300 Hindus set fire to a Muslim-dominated shantytown on the outskirts of Ahmadabad at about 2 a.m. on Friday (2030GMT on Thursday). Hundreds of shops and homes owned by Muslims were burned and gunshots crackled as the death toll mounted.
The latest violence raised the death toll on the religious minority to more than 100.
The attacks were triggered by a Muslim assault on a train Wednesday that left at least 58 dead, most of whom were Hindu nationalists.
On Thursday at least 76 people died when vengeful Hindu mobs roamed the blockaded streets of Ahmadabad and other Gujarat towns and cities, attacking Muslims in their homes, shops and vehicles.
In the worst violence Thursday, a Hindu mob of 2,000 people set fire to homes in an affluent Muslim neighbourhood in Ahmadabad burning to death at least 38 people, including 12 children.
Nearly 1,000 army soldiers arrived early on Friday in Ahmadabad. There was a curfew in 32 towns across Gujarat state and police assumed emergency powers of detention.
