Ross

Ross (Ros in Scottish Gaelic) is a region of Scotland and a former earldom and county. The name Ross allegedly derives from a Gaelic word meaning "headland", perhaps a reference to the Black Isle. Another possible origin is the West Norse word for Orkney – Hrossey – meaning horse island; the area once belonged to the Norwegian (West Norse) earldom of Orkney. Ross is a historical comital region, perhaps predating the Mormaerdom of Ross.

History

Excavations of a rock shelter and shell midden at Sand, Applecross on the coast of Wester Ross have shown that the coast was occupied by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.

It may be doubted whether the Romans ever effected even a temporary settlement in the area of the modern county. In Roman times, and for long afterwards, the land was occupied by Picts, who, in the 6th and 7th centuries, were converted to Christianity by followers of Saint Columba. Throughout the next three centuries the natives were continually harassed by Norwegian Viking raiders, of whose presence tokens have survived in several place-names (Dingwall, Tain, and others). At this time the country formed part of the great province of Moray (Latin: Moravia), which then extended as far as the Dornoch Firth and the Oykel, and practically comprised the whole of Ross and Cromarty.

Ross Wallace

Ross Wallace (born 23 May 1985) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a winger for Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

Club career

Celtic

Born in Dundee, Wallace started his career with Celtic, signing for the club in May 2003 on a four-year deal. A pacy left winger, Wallace made only a handful of first-team appearances in his first year, before scoring his first goal for Celtic in a 5–0 win over Dunfermline on the 8th of November 2003. Whilst clearly a skilful player, Wallace made only a few more first team appearances that season, as Alan Thompson remained the first-choice wide-left player at Celtic. Wallace did however pick up his first silverware at the end of the season, coming on as a second-half susbtitute for Stephen Pearson in Celtic's 3–1 win over Dunfermline in the 2004 Scottish Cup Final.

The following season (2004–05) saw Wallace play more games for Celtic, including three appearances as a substitute in the Champions League. However he made little impact in either his league or European appearances. Wallace did however score a hat-trick in an 8–1 rout of Falkirk in a Scottish League Cup tie in September 2004. That performance earned him public praise from his manager, Martin O'Neill.Alan Thompson also said that Wallace was likely to succeed him in the future at left midfield.

Launched independently in February 2012, Elite Daily was purchased by DMG Media in January 2015 for an estimated $50 million.

In December 2014, Elite Daily ranked as the seventh most shared site on Facebook and the fourteenth most popular US online news entity. In more recent metrics, however, it no longer ranks in the top 25 of either category, however remains a steady feature on social sites.

Elite Daily has a full-time staff of approximately twenty in-house writers. The site also maintains an unpaid contributing program, publishing articles submitted by writers. According to Elite Daily, the site maintains over five thousand contributing writers.
