This introductory video was made to honor the important role Latvia will take over starting from January 1, 2015, for six whole months: the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In order to introduce the country that is going to lead its 27 sisters and to make sure you would get the right impression about us, Latvians, we decided to start with something each and every leader needs: honesty.
So it might be quite cold here for half of the year, and, yes, Latvia has zero great mountains compared to other countries, nor is it the biggest of them all in size; true, Latvians are rather reserved at first...
But then again -- these are the factors that have shaped our view of the world, our character and culture. We are mostly not the ones to show off, but quite perfectionist at the same time; our winters have taught us to plan ahead and also given us the privilege to enjoy all four seasons.
In truth, we have much to offer the world: be it some of the finest classical musicians, opera singers and ballet dancers, Art Nouveau architecture, lush forests, innovations, the fastest internet in Europe, carefully nurtured traditions, or the truly friendly soul you will find hidden behind every Latvian's serious facial expression.
That is how and what we are. Pleased to meet you! Honestly.

Council of the European Union
The Council of the European Union (often still referred to as the Council of Ministers, or sometimes just called the Council (Latin: Consilium)) is the third of the seven institutions of the European Union (EU) as listed in the Treaty on European Union. It is part of the essentially bicameral EU legislature (the other legislative body being the European Parliament) and represents the executive governments of the EU's member states. It is based in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, Belgium.
Composition
The Council meets in 10 different configurations of 28 national ministers (one per state). The precise membership of these configurations varies according to the topic under consideration; for example, when discussing agricultural policy the Council is formed by the 28 national ministers whose portfolio includes this policy area (with the related European Commissioners contributing but not voting).
The Presidency of the Council rotates every six months among the governments of EU member states, with the relevant ministers of the respective country holding the Presidency at any given time ensuring the smooth running of the meetings and setting the daily agenda. The continuity between presidencies is provided by an arrangement under which three successive presidencies, known as Presidency trios, share common political programmes. The Foreign Affairs Council (national foreign ministers) is however chaired by the Union's High Representative.

European Union
The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.
The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade,agriculture,fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

This introductory video was made to honor the important role Latvia will take over starting from January 1, 2015, for six whole months: the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In order to introduce the country that is going to lead its 27 sisters and to make sure you would get the right impression about us, Latvians, we decided to start with something each and every leader needs: honesty.
So it might be quite cold here for half of the year, and, yes, Latvia has zero great mountains compared to other countries, nor is it the biggest of them all in size; true, Latvians are rather reserved at first...
But then again -- these are the factors that have shaped our view of the world, our character and culture. We are mostly not the ones to show off, but quite perfectionist at the same time; our winters have taught us to plan ahead and also given us the privilege to enjoy all four seasons.
In truth, we have much to offer the world: be it some of the finest classical musicians, opera singers and ballet dancers, Art Nouveau architecture, lush forests, innovations, the fastest internet in Europe, carefully nurtured traditions, or the truly friendly soul you will find hidden behind every Latvian's serious facial expression.
That is how and what we are. Pleased to meet you! Honestly.
